Chapter 498: The Alpha’s Ascension.

(Third Person's POV)

Six months later.

The courtyard had never looked like this.

Banners of deep midnight blue and silver hung from every pillar, their fabric fluttering gently in the evening breeze. Torches lined the stone pathways, their flames steady and bright, casting warm light across the gathered crowd. Wolves from neighboring packs filled the open grounds, their murmurs blending into a low, excited hum that felt alive in the air.

Tonight wasn’t just a celebration. Tonight was history. Taylor stood at the center of it all, her heart hammering so loudly she wondered if everyone could hear it.

She wore a gown that shimmered like moonlight caught in silk—silver threaded with faint streaks of deep blue. The fabric flowed around her like water, hugging her form before cascading down to the stone floor. Her hair was braided back from her face, woven with tiny moonstone beads that caught the torchlight and glowed softly.

She felt unreal. Like she was standing in someone else’s life.

“Breathe,” Killian murmured beside her.

She turned her head slightly and met his gaze. He was dressed in formal black, the Alpha markings of his pack embroidered in silver along the collar and cuffs. His presence was grounding—steady, familiar, warm. He offered her a small smile, one only she seemed to see.

“You’re going to be fine,” he whispered. “They already see you as their Alpha.”

She swallowed, her fingers curling into her palms. “That doesn’t make it less terrifying.”

Killian’s hand brushed hers, his fingers threading through hers in a quiet, intimate gesture. “It makes it deserved.”

Across the courtyard, the crowd began to quiet as Dante stepped forward. Dante, the elder Alpha who had helped unite the packs, stood tall despite the years etched into his face. His silver hair was tied back, and his cloak bore the crest of the High Council. When he raised his hand, the murmurs faded into silence.

“Wolves of the Northern and Eastern Territories,” he began, his voice carrying effortlessly across the courtyard. “Tonight, we gather not only to celebrate peace after darkness—but to crown a leader who stood against that darkness when many faltered.”

Taylor’s chest tightened. Dante’s gaze found her, and his eyes softened. “Taylor of the Crescent Pack,” he continued, “you fought fate itself. You defied gods, spirits, and destiny to protect those you love. You united packs that once stood divided. You saved Alpha Marcus, and helped end a threat that would have consumed us all.”

The crowd erupted into applause, howls rising into the night sky. Taylor blinked back tears. She hadn’t done it alone. She knew that. But hearing it spoken aloud—hearing her name attached to those deeds—felt overwhelming.

“Step forward,” Dante said.

Her feet moved before her mind fully caught up. Killian released her hand, but not before squeezing it once, firmly.

You’re not alone.

She stepped onto the raised stone platform. The moon hung high above, nearly full, its pale glow bathing the courtyard in silver light. Dante lifted the ceremonial circlet—a crown forged from pure silver, engraved with runes of unity, strength, and sovereignty. A single blue gem rested at its center, glowing faintly.

“This crown does not make you Alpha,” he said. “Your actions already have. But it symbolizes the trust we place in you.”

He lifted it slowly, placing it upon her head. The moment the cool metal touched her skin, something in the crowd shifted. Wolves dropped to one knee.

The sound of hundreds of bodies lowering at once echoed through the courtyard. Heads bowed. Eyes lowered.

“Alpha Taylor,” they said in unison.

Her breath caught painfully. She stared at them—at people who had once doubted her, feared her, dismissed her. Now they bowed.

Dante stepped aside. “Speak to your people.”

Her throat went dry. She stepped forward, hands trembling slightly as she placed them against the edge of the platform. The torchlight flickered across faces filled with expectation, pride, and hope.

“I—” Her voice wavered. She swallowed and tried again. “I never wanted power.”

A ripple of surprised laughter moved through the crowd. “I wanted peace. I wanted my family safe. I wanted my friends alive.” She glanced toward Killian, Brian, Theresa, Alec, Marcus, and Stella. “And I learned that sometimes, wanting those things means standing where you never imagined you’d stand.”

Her gaze lifted again.

“I don’t promise perfection. I don’t promise that I’ll never make mistakes. But I promise this—no one under my watch will be treated as expendable. No one will be silenced because they are weak. And no fate—god, spirit, or prophecy—will decide who we are.”

A roar of approval erupted. She felt something settle inside her—something solid. This is real. When she stepped down, Killian was there instantly, his hands settling on her waist. Without hesitation, he leaned in and kissed her.

The crowd cheered loudly, whistles and howls breaking through the night. Killian pulled back, his forehead resting against hers.

“Alpha Taylor,” he murmured teasingly, but his eyes were soft. “You did it.”

She laughed through tears. “We did.”

The ceremony flowed into celebration. Music filled the courtyard as the ball began. Long tables were laid with food—roasted meats, fruits, wines, breads, and desserts brought from every allied pack. Lanterns were hung overhead, glowing like stars caught in glass.

Taylor found herself pulled into conversation after conversation. Alphas congratulated her. Elders praised her courage. Young wolves stared at her with wide-eyed admiration.

Then Marcus approached.

He looked different now—lighter. The darkness that had once clung to him was gone, replaced by a quiet steadiness. Stella stood beside him, her hand resting over the visible curve of her stomach beneath her flowing dress. Her baby bump was unmistakable now. Taylor’s chest warmed.

Marcus bowed his head slightly—not in submission, but in respect. “Alpha Taylor.”

She laughed softly. “Marcus, you don’t have to—”

“I want to,” he said, meeting her eyes. “You saved me. You saved Stella. You saved my child’s father.” He placed a hand over his chest. “I owe you more than I can say.”

Stella stepped forward, pulling Taylor into a hug that was both careful and fierce. “Thank you,” Stella whispered, her voice thick. “For believing he was still there. For not giving up.”

Taylor hugged her back. “You were the one who saved him. I just helped.”

Stella smiled, tears shining in her eyes. “Then we both saved him.”

Marcus lifted a glass. “To Alpha Taylor. The wolf who defied fate.”

The crowd echoed the toast.
