Chapter 484: Shattered Paths.

Chapter 484: Shattered Paths.

(Third Person's POV)

The cave did not behave like a cave.mThe moment the team crossed the threshold, reality twisted. The entrance had been a jagged mouth in the mountainside, black stone framed by twisted roots and ancient carvings that looked more like scars than symbols. The air had been thick, metallic, and humming with something alive. Taylor had felt it immediately—pressure in her chest, like an invisible hand pressing against her heart, squeezing tighter with every step.

But no one had expected the cave itself to move. They barely made it ten steps inside before the ground shuddered.

“Did you feel that?” Brian muttered, his hand hovering over the hilt of his weapon.

“Yes,” Alec replied, nostrils flaring as he sniffed the air. “The walls—”

The stone shifted. Not cracked. Not collapsed. Shifted. The corridor ahead of them rippled like water disturbed by a stone. Shadows stretched unnaturally across the floor, crawling up the walls like living things. A low, distorted hum filled the space, vibrating through bones and teeth.

“Formation,” Killian ordered quietly, stepping closer to Taylor without touching her. “Stay in pairs. Don’t—”

The ground erupted. Dark energy surged from the floor in violent tendrils, coiling like serpents. The walls split apart with a thunderous roar, new passages opening where none had existed, old ones sealing like mouths snapping shut.

“Taylor!” Theresa shouted as the ground yanked violently beneath them.

Taylor barely had time to grab Theresa’s wrist before something yanked back. A powerful force ripped through the cavern, pulling them sideways. Stone exploded around them, and the world tilted. Odette’s laughter echoed through the cave. It wasn’t human. It wasn’t even close.

The sound reverberated through every surface, layered with distortion, as if dozens of voices were laughing in unison.

“Well, well,” the voice purred from nowhere and everywhere. “This is going to be fun.”

The cavern split. Taylor felt her fingers ripped from Killian’s hand, felt the echo of his presence vanish as the bond went eerily quiet.

“Killian!” she shouted, her voice swallowed by the roaring darkness.

The world folded in on itself. Taylor and Theresa They slammed into a new chamber, skidding across rough stone. Taylor rolled, her shoulder screaming in protest as she hit a stalagmite and barely stopped herself from tumbling into a black chasm.

Theresa groaned beside her, coughing as she pushed herself upright. “Tell me that wasn’t planned.”

Taylor forced herself to stand, her heart hammering. “Where’s everyone else?”

The chamber was circular, ceiling impossibly high, walls carved with glowing runes that pulsed like veins. Shadows pooled unnaturally in the corners, moving when nothing else did. And then Odette stepped out of the darkness. She looked almost unchanged—same pale skin, same honeyed smile, same eyes that had once been adored by everyone in Taylor’s family. But now, something was wrong. Her aura twisted unnaturally, flickering between human and something far darker.

“You’re persistent,” Odette said lightly, clapping her hands once. “I really hoped you’d die quietly. Less work for me.”

Taylor’s fingers curled into fists. “You’re supposed to be dead.”

Odette’s smile widened. “So are a lot of people in this cave.”

Theresa stepped forward, eyes sharp. “Where’s Marcus?”

“Busy,” Odette replied with a shrug. “And very excited to see your friends.”

She tilted her head, studying Taylor with open fascination. “You know, you really ruin everything just by existing.”

Taylor’s jaw tightened. “You murdered my sister.”

“Correction,” Odette said lightly. “I improved her life. Permanently.”

Theresa moved instantly, her hand glowing with magic as she launched forward. The shadows exploded.

Brian and Alec landed hard in a lower chamber, the impact knocking the air from their lungs.

Alec rolled to his feet immediately, eyes glowing as he scanned the darkness. “Marcus is here.”

Brian didn’t need heightened senses to know that. He felt him. The presence was suffocating. A throne of black stone rose from the center of the chamber, and seated upon it was Marcus. Or what wore his body. His eyes glowed a deep crimson, veins dark and branching across his skin like cracks in porcelain. His aura was a storm of conflicting energies—Marcus’s familiar warmth buried beneath something ancient and cold.

“You came,” Marcus said, voice layered with another voice beneath it. “How touching.”

Alec’s claws extended with a soft scrape. “Let him go.”

Marcus laughed, a sound that echoed off the cavern walls unnaturally. “He is here. You’re the ones trespassing.”

Brian stepped forward, weapon drawn. “You’re wearing his body.”

“I am borrowing it,” the possessed spirit corrected pleasantly. “He’s still inside. Screaming. Crying. Begging me to stop.”

Alec’s jaw clenched. “Enough.”

Marcus stood. The chamber trembled.“Let’s see if you’re worth killing first,” the spirit purred.

On the other hand, Killian landed with Dylan. The passage slammed shut behind them with a deafening crash. Killian turned sharply, heart racing as the bond with Taylor flickered like a dying flame. “Taylor—”

He couldn’t reach her. The narrow corridor stretched forward, jagged stone walls pressing inward as if alive. And standing at the other end, leaning casually against the rock, was Dylan.

He looked calm. Too calm.

“Well,” Dylan said lightly, crossing his arms. “Looks like it’s just us.”

Killian’s eyes hardened. “Where is she?”

“Alive,” Dylan replied easily. “For now.”

The corridor pulsed with runes, sealing any escape. “You planned this,” Killian said.

“Not all of it,” Dylan admitted, tilting his head. “But I’m not complaining.”

He stepped forward, his aura flaring, silver-blue, cold, controlled.

“You’ve always been in my way,” Dylan continued softly. “Even in the other timeline.”

Killian snarled. “You’re not taking her again.”

Dylan smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “We’ll see.”

Realization soon hit the team. They had been split In three different chambers, and three different battles began.

Taylor stared down Odette, realizing this was never about jealousy anymore, it was desperation, ambition, madness.

Brian and Alec faced the possessed Marcus, knowing they might have to destroy their friend’s body to save the world.

Killian stood locked with Dylan, fate and obsession colliding in a narrow corridor with no escape.
