Chapter Eleven - The Truth 2

Shane’s POV.

I was in the middle of a business call when a knock sounded on my office door. It made me frown because I’d instructed the guards by the door not to let anyone disturb me, but it seemed they’d failed to obey my instructions. I’d neglected my father’s company for quite some time, while sticking to the activities of the pack but I was finally deciding to take over and hire a manager to overlook the operations while my main focus would remain on running the pack.

The knock sounded again and I had no choice but to end the call.

“Come in,” I called out to whoever it was, still annoyed by the disturbance but my frown ebbed away as soon as I saw Dr. Mark strolling in with a grim expression on his face. I’d forgotten that I was expecting him.

After the incident of the previous day and the confession of Anna’s father, I decided to take Chase’s idea as soon as I was calm enough to reason properly. Hence, that evening when the pack doctor had showed up to check on Anna, I’d had a private discussion with him, and asked him to run a test on her to determine if she was truly a sigma like her father had claimed or if he’d fed us with lies to save his head.

“Good evening, Dr. Mark.”

The doctor came to a stop beside my desk. “Good evening, Alpha Shane. I apologize for coming at a bad time, but I have the results of the test I conducted on the girl,”

On hearing his words, my heart beat spiked up and I settled into my chair, placing both of my arms on the armrest.

“You may take a seat.” I motioned to one of the chairs opposite mine and he sat, before returning his attention to mine.

“From the blood and DNA test I conducted, I’ve confirmed that she’s not a sigma. She does have the qualities of an alpha but they’re recessive and asides that, I also discovered that her blood and DNA are much stronger than that of the normal werewolf,”

I frowned at his words, wondering how she could be an alpha. She wasn’t showing any signs of such and neither did her father. If he was an alpha wolf, then he’d have fought but the moment I laid eyes on him, I didn’t get such energy from him. He seemed to be a wolf of much lower rank and so did Anna.

“Doctor, are you sure about this? It’s of utmost importance that you make no mistakes,”

Dr. Mark nodded in understanding.

“If it’ll convince you more, I have the test results here,”

He dipped his hand into the pockets of his slacks and fished out a folded paper, before handing it to me. Without hesitation, I took the report from his hand and opened it, my eyes gradually scanning the words on the paper and the more I read, the more understanding dawned on me and the more my receding anger waxed stronger as the realization hit me that her father had been telling lies just like I’d initially thought.

“Will any complications arise from the different DNA?”

“Not at all, Alpha but I’ve detected that it’ll make her heal faster.”

Silence greeted us for a while as I kept staring at the test result, my fury building but I managed to keep it at bay.

“If that’s all, I’ll be on my way now, Alpha Shane.”

I’d almost forgotten that the doctor was still with me as I’d been so lost in my rage and the information that was presented in the result. I could feel Axel seething in anger and I saw the look of trepidation and anxiousness in the doctor’s eyes. There was no doubt that he could feel the malicious energy that Axel was projecting.

“You may leave.”

The moment the words left my lips, he was on his feet and hurrying out of the door but I didn’t care that my attitude had scared the poor man. I was more engrossed in thinking of the perfect way to punish Anna’s father for deceiving her and successfully weaving a web of lies for so long just to deceive the innocent girl and make her feel he was doing her a favor, rather than abusing her.

I was still lost in these thoughts when another knock sounded on the door. Instantly, my eyes snapped to it and I gritted my teeth in annoyance. As if the person at the door could sense my disapproval, they spoke, “I’m sorry for disrupting your quiet moment, Alpha Shane, but Dr. Nathan is here and he requests your presence,”

My shoulders slumped in distress on hearing the name of the foreign doctor that was treating my sick father. Anytime I heard of Dr. Nathan, it reminded me of my current predicament as the clueless pack leader, relying on just his instincts to run the pack affairs.

“I’ll join him in a minute.”

I stared at the test results for a while before closing my eyes and drawing in a deep breath to calm my nerves and anger. Thereafter, I rose to my feet and pocketed the paper before striding out of my office to meet Dr. Nathan, at the door of my father’s chambers.

“You wanted to see me?”

“Yes, Alpha Shane. Please, come with me.”

I followed behind him as he got into my father’s bedroom, and led me to his bedside. A fearful chill ran down my spine when I saw my father’s frail and fragile body, laying on the bed. He looked so pale and lifeless that I doubt he was ever going to be cured. I glanced at the doctor and his eyes met mine. His eyes were bearing a look of remorse and I knew things were about to get more difficult for me.

“I’m sorry, Alpha Shane, but I’ve done all I can and I’ve even gotten some assistance from the best medical practitioners in the world but it was to no avail. As you can see, he’s barely hanging onto his life and I’m sure in the next couple of days, he’ll be drawing his last breath.”

Bile rose in my throat and a big lump formed there, making it hard for me to swallow it down. My heart dropped as I reached for my father’s arm with shaky hands but the moment I touched him, I was quick to withdraw my hand as his temperature was so cold that I feared he may have even taken his last breath.

“Doctor…” I started but he nodded in understanding.

“I know, but he’s still hanging in there.”

Silence ensured for a bit but he spoke again.

“Have you considered that it may be the moon goddess calling him to return home? It occurs in many mated couples that as soon as one of the spouses is dead, the other would have to follow a few years later. At this point, I think that’s the only explanation for his ailment and if that’s the case, there’s nothing we can do to save him. His soul now belongs to the moon goddess.”

I half-heartedly listened to the doctor as I pondered on how drastically my life was about to change. It was one thing to be an acting Alpha until my father could recover and it was an entirely different thing to be made the alpha of the pack, to take over from my father, and to be expected to walk in his footsteps to keep the pack safe and on good grounds.

How was I going to handle all of that?

While I was still pondering on this, my phone rang and I quickly pulled it from my pocket, taking a step outside my father’s bedroom before answering it. The moment the phone touched my ear, Chase’s alarmed voice sailed in.

“A stranger has been captured in the woods, where he was caught trying to kill one of our people.”
