Chapter 63: The Predator’s Hunger

Chapter 63: The Predator’s Hunger
\- SELENE
Kaelen didn’t move. He just stood there, framed by the dark mahogany of the doorframe, watching me sip my bitter tea like I was a puzzle he was tired of trying to solve. The air in the room felt thick, charged with the kind of static that precedes a lightning strike.
"The ghosts?" he repeated, his voice dropping low. He stepped into the room with the click of the latch behind him. "You’re awfully bold this morning, Selene. Most women in your position would be begging for a coat and a warm meal."
"I’m done begging," I said, setting the cup down on the saucer with a deliberate clink. I leaned back against the headboard, crossing my arms. "Besides, I’m not 'most women.' You made sure of that when you brought Vireya into this house."
His eyes flared at the name. It was a flick of a match in a dark room.
"Vireya has nothing to do with this," he snapped, pacing toward the window.
"Doesn't she?" I let out a sharp, dry laugh. "You’re so obsessed with finding a 'strong' Luna, someone with the right bloodline and the right submissive streak. And yet, here you are, locking me in a room while your precious prize is downstairs, shivering under a mountain of blankets because a little mountain air nearly killed her."
Kaelen spun around, his face a mask of cold fury. "Watch your mouth."
"Why? Is the truth too loud for you, Kaelen?" I stood up, walking toward him. I felt like I was walking on a tightrope, but for the first time, I didn't care if I fell. "You wanted a powerhouse. You wanted a queen to match your 'ambition.' And instead, you got a girl who can barely walk to the mailbox without catching a cold. She’s weak and fragile. She’s exactly what you deserve."
I stopped a foot away from him, my chin tilted up. "You’re so busy hunting a man who actually knows how to survive that you can't even see that your own 'perfect' Luna is just a hollow shell. You’re trading a wolf for a lamb, Kaelen. And everyone in this pack knows it."
I braced myself for a blow or a scream, expecting him to lose it and storm out. I’d rehearsed the impact in my head.
What I didn't expect was the way his gaze changed.
The anger didn't vanish, but it shifted. It shifted into something primal, a dark hunger that made my skin crawl. He looked at me, not as a piece of furniture or a social asset, but as a challenge. His eyes raked over my messy hair, the smudge of dirt I’d missed on my neck, and the spark of defiance in my stare.
"You’ve got a lot of nerve," he whispered, stepping into my space. "Where was this fire ten years ago?"
"It was waiting for a reason to burn," I said, my heart starting to hammer against my ribs. "And you gave me plenty."
He reached out, his hand wrapping around the back of my neck. It wasn't a gentle touch. His fingers dug into the sensitive skin at the base of my skull, forcing me to look up.
"You think you’re so much better than her," he murmured, his breath smelling of expensive gin and a long, sleepless night. "You think this little act makes you a threat."
"I don't think, Kaelen. I know. You’re attracted to it, aren't you? The fact that I’m not bowing down. The fact that I’m finally showing teeth."
A dark, twisted smirk touched his lips. "Maybe I am."
Before I could move, before I could breathe, he lunged forward.
It wasn't a kiss. It was an invasion. He crushed his mouth against mine with a desperate, violent hunger that made my head spin. It tasted of iron and the suffocating weight of being someone else's property.
I tried to push him away, my hands flat against his chest, but he was like a stone wall. He was stronger, faster, and fueled by a decade of repressed boredom and sudden, sharp lust.
He shoved me back toward the bed, the mattress hitting the back of my knees. I tumbled onto the pillows, gasping for air, but he was already there, his weight pinning me down.
"Kaelen, stop!" I hissed. But the words caught in my throat, coming out thin and sharp. "This isn't—"
"Shut up," he growled, his hands fumbling with the silk ties of my nightgown. "You wanted to show me how strong you are? Show me."
For the first time since Vireya had arrived—since he’d pushed me aside like an old toy—he was focused entirely on me. But it wasn't love. It wasn't even passion. It was a conquest. He wanted to break the "new" Selene before she could actually become a problem.
I fought him. I scratched at his shoulders, I bit my lip until I tasted blood, but he didn't care. He was a predator who had finally found a prey that fought back, and it only made him more relentless.
He pushed the thin fabric of my nightgown open, baring the swell of my breasts and the flat plane of my stomach. I struggled, kicking at the sheets, but his hand slid down, cupping between my legs with a bruising grip.
"Is this what you want?" he breathed, his voice a ragged snarl. "All the time, locked up in your little tower, are you thinking about me fucking you? Is that what gets you off, Selene?"
"No," I gasped, my eyes squeezed shut.
"Don't lie," he growled.
He yanked my panties aside, his fingers sliding between the folds of my skin. He pushed one, then two inside, stretching me roughly. I winced, tears pricking my eyes, but he was merciless.
"Don't fucking lie," he snarled again. "You don't think I hear you at night? Screaming like a bitch in heat?"
"That's not for you," I gasped, arching against him.
"No? Then who is it for?" he asked, his fingers pumping into me in a slow, agonizing rhythm.
I didn't answer. I just bit my lip until I tasted blood again.
"Who are you screaming for, Selene?" he asked, his other hand slipping up to grab my breast, his fingers rolling the taut, aching nipple.
I grabbed his wrist, pushing his hand deeper, guiding his rhythm. He let out a low growl, his eyes going glassy with need.
"Say it," he commanded, his thumb finding the slick nub at the apex of my thighs. "Tell me who you're thinking about."
I remained silent. I guided him, letting him feel what I needed, telling him what I liked with a series of soft gasps and moans.
My plan worked. His breathing became heavy and uneven, his own body straining against the tight confines of his slacks.
"This is what you want, right?" I panted, grabbing his hand. I forced him to touch me the way Rowan had. Gentle and slow. "This is all you ever wanted, Kaelen. All those late nights in the library. That's what you were thinking about, wasn't it?"
"I always knew you were a whore," he said, his hips rocking against me. "I always knew you were lying, that there was something broken inside you. You were never meant to be a wife. You were born to be a whore."
I didn't respond. I closed my eyes, my hands gripping the bedsheets.
He was wrong, and he would never know how wrong. Because he didn't deserve the truth.
"Show me, then," he hissed, his breath hot against my cheek. "Show me how much you want it."
I arched my back, pressing myself into his hand.
"I'll give you whatever you want," he whispered, his fingers working faster, harder, sending a wave of heat through my core. "If this is what you need, I'll give it to you. No one else can fuck you like this, Selene."
"Yes," I breathed, my legs trembling. My hands dug into his shirt, clinging to him.
"Tell me," he whispered, his mouth moving against the column of my throat.
"I'm yours, Kaelen. Just don't stop."
He didn't. He shoved hard into me until I was shaking, every nerve ending on fire.
I cried out, the orgasm shattering, the wave breaking, but there was nothing left to hold on to.
It was over as quickly as it had started—a blur of heat, pain, and the crushing weight of a man who thought he could own a soul by claiming a body.
"Don't worry, pet," he whispered, his fingers moving slowly now, stroking the sensitive skin with a featherlight touch. "We're just getting started. I'll make sure you remember exactly who's in charge."
His words should have terrified me. Instead, they sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through my veins.
Kaelen thought he was punishing me.
But all he'd done was awaken a wolf.
He stood up, adjusting his shirt with a clinical precision that made my skin crawl. He didn't look at me as I huddled on the edge of the bed, pulling the torn fabric of my gown around me.
"You’re right about one thing, Selene," he said, his voice cold and steady again. "You do have teeth. But don't forget whose hand feeds you."
He walked toward the door, his silhouette tall and imposing against the light from the hall. He paused with his hand on the handle.
"I’ll have Liora bring you a fresh gown. And some ice. Try to look presentable for dinner. We have guests."
The door slammed shut. The bolt slid home.
I stayed there for a long time, staring at the dust motes dancing in the morning sun. My body felt bruised, my spirit battered, but as I reached out and touched the journal sitting on the vanity, I felt something else.
Pure, crystalline hatred.
He thought he’d won. He thought he’d reminded me of my place. But all he’d done was give me one more reason to burn this house to the ground.
I reached inside the journal, my fingers brushing the edge of the map.
I’m coming for you, Kaelen, I thought, a single, cold tear tracking a path through the dust on my face. And when I do, I’m going to make sure you never sleep again.
I stood up, my legs shaking, and walked to the washbasin. I scrubbed my skin until it was red, trying to wash away the scent of his cologne and his remaining seed.
I didn't break. I just went still, like a hunter in the weeds, and waited.
The game had changed again. And this time, I wasn't playing by the rules.
