Chapter 230 Maybe Tonight, Maybe The Day We Die
Chapter 230 Maybe Tonight, Maybe The Day We Die
Nathan's POV
The soft glow of moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting silver streaks across our tangled limbs. Rachel's breathing had slowed, her body relaxed against mine as the passionate storm that had consumed us moments ago settled into quiet aftermath.
I traced lazy patterns on her bare shoulder, marveling at how someone so fierce in battle could feel so soft beneath my fingertips.
My chest tightened with emotions I still struggled to name. The war was over, our enemies subdued, and our son was safe.
Yet uncertainty gnawed at me, an Alpha who controlled territories and commanded thousands, but couldn't silence the doubt in my own mind.
"Thank you, Rachel," I whispered against her hair, inhaling her sweet scent of honey and wildflowers.
Her fingers paused their gentle exploration of my chest. "For what?"
"Thank you... for being with me," I continued, my voice rougher than intended. "Thank you for letting me love you."
Rachel shifted in my arms, tilting her face up to meet my gaze. Her green eyes reflected the moonlight, turning them into pools of liquid silver.
She said, "Nathan, I thank the Moon Goddess every day for making me the luckiest woman in the world."
I saw myself mirrored in her eyes—not as the fearsome Alpha others cowered before, but as the man she had chosen.
It should have been enough. It was enough. And yet...
"Nathan, you have that look again," Rachel said, her fingers tracing the crease between my brows. "What's on your mind?"
I captured her hand, pressing a kiss to her palm. "Just thinking about how grateful I am to have you. After everything... that we can be together like this."
"Nathan, we're a pair." Her voice was soft but certain.
I nodded, but the knot in my chest remained. "Rachel, do you ever think about our past? About when I was still a rogue Alpha, or when I... when I marked you against your will?"
Her expression softened, no trace of resentment in her eyes. "Marked me against my will?..." She shook her head. "Nathan, you did that to save my life. I'd never blame you for that."
"Thank you for saying that," I replied, relief washing through me. But there was more, something that had been bothering me for weeks now.
Rachel studied my face. "There's something else. You've been acting strange lately. Talk to me, Nathan."
I took a deep breath, finally voicing the question that had been burning inside me. "If you don't hold that against me... I can't help but wonder, Rachel, why haven't you marked me?"
Her eyes widened slightly.
"If you marked me," I continued, "we would be inseparable. You would officially be my Luna. We would have the mind link. It would strengthen our bond in ways I can't even describe."
A small smile played at the corners of her lips. "Nathan, I don't need a mind link to know what you're thinking. I know you well enough now that I can guess your thoughts without you saying a word."
I chuckled, conceding the point. "That's true. But still, it would be best for our mate bond. What do you think?"
When I looked down again, Rachel had her eyes closed, her breathing even and deep.
Is she ignoring me? Does she not want to... No, I shouldn't overthink this.
She must be more exhausted than I realized, especially after we went at it for another two hours today. I carefully shifted my position to make sure she was comfortable, then pulled the blanket up to cover her shoulders.
I watched her sleep, a sense of peace washing over me at the sight, though that familiar worry still lingered at the edges.
Stupid of me to ask such questions when she needs rest, I chided myself. But deep down, the fear remained: What if Rachel runs from me again?
She's become so amazing now. I'm afraid once other guys notice her, they'll be lining up to confess their feelings.
Rachel's POV
The corners of my mouth twitched with hidden amusement as I kept my breathing steady and even.
Poor Nathan thought I'd fallen asleep, but I was very much awake, simply buying time to consider his question.
Why hadn't I marked him? The answer was complicated. Part of me enjoyed this new dynamic between us—equal, or perhaps even tilted slightly in my favor.
The great Alpha Nathan Blackwood seemed to need me more than I needed him, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't find that satisfying after everything we'd been through.
There was no need to mark him. Nothing could separate us now—I knew that with bone-deep certainty, even if Nathan didn't seem to share my confidence.
Maybe that was it. Maybe his insecurity stemmed from the fact that I no longer needed his protection. I could defend myself and our son now.
But I don't want to be dependent on anyone. I love Nathan, but that doesn't mean I can't be independent. I don't want to become that breeder.
His arm tightened around me as he settled in, his heartbeat strong and steady beneath my ear. There was something almost... cute about the way he worried I might leave or look at another man.
And I meant what I'd said—I didn't need a mind link to know what he was thinking.
Why do we need to formalize anything? I wondered. Can't we just enjoy what we have?
I snuggled closer to Nathan's warmth, letting his heartbeat lull me into actual sleep.
Several days later, I finished my training session with Enzo and young Eli, both promising warriors who had been improving remarkably under my guidance. Sweat glistened on my skin as I sheathed my practice sword.
"You both did well today," I said, grabbing a towel to wipe my face. "Why don't you join me for lunch at the castle?"
Enzo and Eli exchanged uneasy glances.
"We'd love to join you, Queen Rachel..." Eli began hesitantly. "But we can't enter the castle."
I frowned. "What do you mean? Of course you can."
Enzo cleared his throat. "Have you not heard about Alpha Nathan's new decree?"
"What decree?" I asked, feeling my eyebrows rise.
"Alpha Nathan announced yesterday that unless it's an emergency, single males are not allowed to enter the castle," Eli explained, looking uncomfortable. "We'll only be allowed back inside once we find mates."
My jaw dropped. "What?!"
Before I could demand more information, both men suddenly sucked in sharp breaths.
"Your Majesty, I just remembered the Commander asked me to draft a training plan for the new recruits," Eli said hurriedly.
Enzo backed away a step. "Your Majesty, Beta Tyler wanted me to report on the relocation of displaced civilians to their homes!"
In seconds, both men had practically sprinted away, leaving me standing confused. I turned to see what had frightened them.
There, standing on the balcony of his office, was Nathan. Our eyes met across the distance, and he flashed me a charming, innocent smile that did nothing to hide the possessive gleam in his eyes.
I smiled back and waved, thinking to myself that this handsome, jealous man wasn't scary at all. In fact, he was very cute.
This kind of Nathan only makes me want to kiss him.
That evening, as Selena brushed my hair in my dressing room, she broke the comfortable silence. "Have you heard about the decree Alpha Nathan announced?"
"Yes," I confirmed, watching her nimble fingers work through my copper strands in the mirror. "I couldn't bring my friends to lunch in the castle today because of it."
Selena's hands paused momentarily. "My Queen, I wonder when you'll mark him and make him..."
I understood her implication immediately. "When I'm ready, I suppose."
"And when might that be?" she pressed gently.
I looked at my reflection in the mirror, a small smile playing on my lips. "I don't know. Maybe tonight, maybe the day we die."
