Chapter 93 The Harsh Truth

Chapter 93 The Harsh Truth
\[Osiris’ POV\]
I fight everything in me that screams to stop, to just let him go on his way, to not go along with the bastard standing in front of me.
Was it actually necessary? Would he choose to venture to my own condo to be sneaky?
The answer was yes, and that’s why I’m pulling my phone out of my pocket and sending a quick message to Reg before I’m standing.
“Alright,” I announce, just wanting to get things over with. “Let’s go.”
“Eager as always.” Ray chuckles. “Didn’t you say you had a lot of work to do? You could simply come join me once you get off.”
“I’d rather get it done now.” I counter, grabbing my coat and moving. “After all, I’m sure you have a lot of things to move.”
Of course, I was certain that he probably had the help of Father’s men to do such things, but again, that just makes things a bit more unnerving.
They would certainly recognize the guards that I had watching over my prey, and once they saw them, it was only a matter of time before they got suspicious.
“Let’s go.” I say now, shoving past Ray. “I will have Reg take care of things from here.”
“Whatever you say, big brother.”
Holding back the grimace that wants to come, I lead the way out of my office and then down to the lobby of the building.
Once we arrive, I head straight to my secretary.
“Please cancel all my meetings for the rest of the day.” I tell her. “Something has come up.”
“Of course,” she responds. “I do hope that whatever it is isn’t too bad.”
If only. I think, heading toward the building’s exit while Ray tails me. And when we reach my car, I turn my gaze to his.
“Get in,” I tell him while he stares at me.
“I can wait for my own car.” He counters but stops as I give him a look. “Alright, you’re the boss,” he laughs before climbing in.
Satisfied, I get in myself while wondering what the hell I was even doing.
Who knew that a single woman would have me acting so irrationally? Most certainly not me, but just the thought of Ray laying eyes on her or even a finger just…
No. I tell myself, revving the car to life and then peeling out of the parking lot. I can’t think of such things.
For now, I just needed to focus on making sure that Ray didn’t suspect anything, and then I could get my prey out of there and somewhere new where she would be safe.
‘What about her own home?’ Sterling suggests. ‘Isn’t that the safest place for her?’
‘No,’ I counter. ‘She can still be found there.’
‘Then why don’t you just stop hiding her?’
At his words, I realize that maybe, just maybe, that would be for the best, but I couldn’t do such a thing, not yet. Not until we got a confirmation on whether or not she was the daughter of Emerald Moon. After that, she would be introduced to society, and then our relationship could be made public.
Until then, it was best to continue my charade with Adeline and keep things strictly professional when my prey returned to work and took her place beside me.
The ride to our destination is a quiet and tense one, at least for me. However, Ray seems unbothered, which is something that he’s pretty damn known for doing.
That was one of the things that bothered me about him.
When things were tense or a competition was being held between us, he always looked so damn ill-at-ease, like he didn’t have a single care in the world, while I was left fighting with everything in me.
Was it because he believed that his mother would be able to get rid of me, or was it because he was hiding something from me?
I wasn’t sure, but when it came to the man sitting beside me, I knew that I couldn’t let my guard down.
Coward.
The single word appears in my mind, taunting me and causing me to grip the steering wheel in front of me so tightly that my knuckles begin to turn white.
“Careful,” Ray murmurs. “Otherwise, you’re going to end up crashing.”
“Would that be so bad?”
I mean, as wolves we wouldn’t take on much damage, and if we did, we would end up healing. It wasn’t like a car crash would be the end of things, but I quite liked my car and didn’t wish to destroy it just yet.
“I’m not going to crash.” I continue, knowing that my prey wouldn’t like it if something happened to me. “Unless the vehicle has been tampered with.”
As I say this, I give Ray a pointed look, but he remains ill-at-ease, unphased, and unbothered by anything.
“Do you have that many enemies?” He asks, smirking. “You should really fix that habit of yours where you piss people off by acting above them.”
“That’s how you survive out there.” I tell him, pulling into the parking lot of our destination. “If you don’t show your power, then they’ll eat you alive and take everything.”
You included. I add quietly.
He was the one person that posed the most threat to me, even if he tried to act like he didn’t give two shits about what happened.
“Oh well,” Ray shrugs as we park. “I prefer to just go with the flow and see where the tides take me.”
Lies. I think. You don’t have to lift a finger because you have someone beside you helping you all the way, while I’m alone in this battle. You should consider yourself lucky.
Remaining silent, I climb out of the car and then extend my senses until I feel the essences of my guards.
'Make yourselves scarce." I tell them, hoping that they understood what I meant. 'Ray is about to enter the building.'
'Yes, alpha,' they say together, giving me peace of mind.
Satisfied, I cut my connection with them and then turn to find Ray watching me, but when I lift my brows, urging him to say whatever it is he is thinking, he just shakes his head and starts moving.
