Chapter 56 A Late Night Visit

Chapter 56 A Late Night Visit
\[Osiris’ POV\]
For the rest of the evening, Adeline and I talk idly while dining and drinking. It’s all so mundane and normal, and yet I feel like I’m drowning.
Maybe it’s because the woman in front of me isn’t the one I want to be with or that I’m simply tired, but I can’t seem to force myself to listen completely to what is being said. And when the evening is finally finished, I don’t hesitate to get up and head toward where my car is waiting.
As I move, I pull my phone out of my pocket and dial my prey and then wait for her to answer. However, the phone continues to ring again and again, causing a wave of anxiety to rush through me.
Unable to control what I’m feeling, I hop in my car and slam the gas so that I speed through the city.
When I reach my condo, I quickly park and then head into the elevator and hit the button for the penthouse. And when it reaches and the doors open, I step inside to find my prey fast asleep on the couch, dressed in nothing but a fluffy robe.
For a moment, I remain in place, taking her in as she sleeps peacefully, but when she groans from the uncomfortable position, I move forward and gently scoop her into my arms.
As I do, she groans again and squirms, but when her head finds my chest, she relaxes and lets out a contented sigh that I can’t help but wonder is because it is me that she is cuddling.
Suddenly feeling ridiculous for thinking such a thing, I move toward the bedroom, and when I reach the bed, I lay her down and then cover her up.
Sighing, I drop to my knees beside her and just watch as she sleeps peacefully.
Who knew that watching someone sleep could be so calming? Most certainly not me, but this scene alone seems to wash away all the frustration, anxiety, and unpleasant emotions I was feeling.
“What have you done to me?” I whisper, reaching out and brushing some stray hair behind her ear. “You’re turning me into a version of myself that I didn’t know could ever actually exist.”
At my words, the side of my prey’s lips quirks, and I can’t help but wonder if she is actually awake and listening to me, but when a soft snore escapes her, I know that isn’t the case.
“How can you sleep so peacefully? A predator is right here beside you, and yet you’re acting so damn cutely?”
Unable to ignore my annoyance, I grab her cheek and then pinch until her eyes fly open and come to rest on me.
“Osiris?” She breathes as if confused over seeing me. “Why are you…”
“I wanted to see you,” I admit. “But you were sleeping soundly.”
“Then why didn’t you leave?”
As she speaks, she sits up, and one side of her robe slides down, exposing her bare shoulder beneath.
Either unaware or not caring about the sudden show of skin, my prey continues to glare at me while I fight the urge to bite that shoulder and leave my mark.
“Haven’t I told you before that it is creepy to watch someone sleep?” She pushes when I don’t speak. “Don’t you know what boundaries are?”
“I wonder,” I murmur, purposely flicking my gaze to her shoulder. “But how can you ask me about boundaries when you’re trying to seduce me?”
For a moment, she doesn’t speak. Instead, she just stares at me while clearly trying to determine what it is that I’m referring to.
Chuckling, I reach out and gently brush my fingers along her collarbone, earning myself not only a shiver but also a little squeak of shock that sets my nerve endings on fire.
Before I can stop myself, I’m leaning forward, my gaze fixed on my prey’s as my mouth finds that same collarbone and grazes it.
Her skin is warm and soft, and it reminds me of how it felt that night we were together. Up until this point, I didn’t allow myself to think too hard about that night because when I did, I would find myself wanting to do it again, but now here in this time and place, I wanted to recreate that scene.
That’s why instead of pulling back, I continue to push forward, gently coaxing my prey onto her back so that I’m left hovering over her.
Smiling, I take her in, lying there beneath me with flushed cheeks and sparkling eyes. She’s beautiful. So much more beautiful than any woman I had ever come across.
Not only was she beautiful, but she was also so damn innocent and oblivious that it drove me crazy.
Even now, with me here like this above her, with her pinned beneath me, she doesn’t react. Is it because she doesn’t think I will make a move, or is it because she wants me to?
Deciding it was better to find out for myself, I lean down and then stop when our faces are mere inches apart.
“Are you going to stop me?” I ask, though I don’t want her to stop me.
With her below me like this, I’m starting to not be able to think straight.
Was it because I had a few drinks with Adeline, or was it something more?
Even now, I can feel that pull from that night we first met, and it makes me want to claim her, to make her mine.
“Are you drunk?”
The words leave my prey’s lips, mirroring my own thoughts, and I can’t help but let out a laugh.
“Maybe,” I admit. “Is that a problem?”
Growing quiet, I wait as my prey’s eyes flick to my lips, and I know that even if she is trying to act calm, she is feeling what I’m feeling too.
Even from here I can hear her heart beating rapidly and her breath hitch, and when she doesn’t say anything more, I move.
The minute our lips touch, I feel the world around me disappearing and being replaced with a cocoon of passion and need that I’ve only ever felt one other time in my life.
It’s all-consuming and powerful, and it makes my hands move, searching for the soft skin that hides beneath my prey’s robe.
“Wai-wait,” she gasps as my fingers trail to her thigh and then squeeze. “What are you…”
“I asked you if you wanted me to stop.” I breathe against her lips. “You didn’t utter a single word.”
“That’s…” She begins but stops as my fingers trail up her thigh, venturing beneath her robe and coming dangerously close to her promised land. “Stop!”
