Chapter 165 Hesitance
Chapter 165 Hesitance
\[Osiris’ POV\]
I don’t speak as disbelief rushes through me over my flame actually wanting to go along with whatever hairbrained scheme my brother was up to.
“I don’t want to,” I say slowly. “And you shouldn’t either. Don’t you know what he and that woman he calls mother are capable of?”
Growing quiet, I wait while my flame doesn’t speak, and the urge to return to Moon Storm and bring her back with me kicks in, but even I know that isn’t the way to deal with things.
If you were irrational and emotional in your actions, you were certainly much more likely to be killed or beaten.
“Listen,” my flame finally sighs, breaking the silence that has fallen around us. “I know that it is hard to believe, but I’m certain that Ray wants to get rid of your stepmother as much as you do.”
Once again, I don’t speak as I try to make sense of what I’m hearing.
Was she really going along with him instead of me?
A pang of pain rushes through me, but I keep my expression neutral like she can actually see it.
“And how do you know that?”
Of course, I knew that Ray was sick, and because of his sickness, he swore that his mother didn’t want anything to do with him, but then what exactly was going on right now?
From what I saw, they were on pretty good fucking terms.
No. Something about this didn’t make sense to me, and because of that, I couldn’t just agree to what my flame wanted.
“I can’t possibly allow you to go along with what they want.” I sigh. “There is no way that I am willing to put you and our pups in danger for a possibility.”
“It isn’t a possibility.” She argues. “I know you have no reason to believe this, but Ray is on our side.”
“How do you know that?” I repeat, my frustration is getting the better of me. “Just what the hell has he said or done to make you believe that?”
Again that damned pang of pain shoots through me as I remember how much time and effort it took to make my flame trust me, but after only a day or two she was on Ray’s side.
What the hell was even happening?
“He returned my memories.”
My flame’s voice is soft, quiet, as though she is afraid the wrong person is going to hear, and in all honesty I find myself wondering if I heard her correctly.
“If it wasn’t for him, I would still believe that that woman was my mother-in-law-to-be and that Ray was my future husband.”
At her words, I feel a rush of anger, and I start to see red, but I take a deep breath to calm myself.
“And because of that you believe him?” I demand. “I didn’t think you were that naive.”
The words leave my lips before I can stop them, and I immediately regret them as a hiss of shock escapes my frame, but now that they were said, I couldn’t possibly take them back.
“Is that what you think of me?” She asks. “That I’m naive and I can’t make a proper judgement of people?”
“That isn’t…”
“You know, I was the one that insisted that we clue you in on what was happening because I didn’t want you to torture yourself wondering what the hell was happening, but maybe we should have just left you out of the plan.”
Opening my mouth, I prepare to argue, but before I get the chance, my flame continues going.
“You can call me naive, but if this means eliminating a threat to you and me and our pups in the future, then I’m willing to take the chance.”
“I get it,” I huff, hating that she was getting so worked up. “I’m sorry for calling you naive.”
“Are you really?”
Her voice is haughty and full of stubbornness, and in that moment I find myself wishing I could see her expression. I was certain that she looked so fucking lovely.
“Say I believe that Ray actually wants to help get rid of his mother,” I say slowly. “How will this work?”
“Easy,” my flame responds happily. “We will put together a little slideshow of all her misdeeds and reveal it on the day of the wedding.”
For a moment, I don’t speak as I take in her words, and then one single question slams into me.
“Just when is this wedding?” I ask.
From the way she was speaking, it was like it would be happening very soon, but that couldn’t be possible, right?
There was no way that they put a wedding together that quickly, right?
“Next week.”
My flame’s words hit me like a ton of bricks, and I once again feel the urge to rush to Moon Storm and kidnap her and bring her back here.
“That soon?” I ask. “How the hell is that even possible?”
“I would assume that your stepmother was already planning this for a while.” My flame responds. “That’s the only way such a grand event could be put together like this. As is, there is supposed to be a banquet in honor of our engagement this coming Friday.”
“A banquet,” I repeat. “Isn’t that woman afraid that others will ask why you’re suddenly with Ray instead of me?”
“No,” my flame responds. “She has been making sure that Jean warps everyone’s memories.”
At her words, I remember my grandfather’s attitude toward me, and everything starts to make perfect sense.
“She has been plotting quite a bit,” I murmur. “And here I thought she was a complete idiot.”
“Never underestimate your enemies.” My flame says. “Otherwise, you will end up getting defeated.”
“And we can’t possibly allow that to happen.” I chuckle. “Alright, I will go along with this for the time being, but if I so much as get a whiff of something being amiss, I will go to Moon Storm and drag you back.”
"I will hold you to it," my flame responds. "Just hang in there a bit longer for me."
