Chapter Thirty: Prisoner
Demetri’s POV.
The day after I met with the Cold Lightning pack I did some digging. A file was buried in one of the locked drawers in my office. My Father only gave me the code a year ago but didn’t thoroughly look through the files at the time. The was a file on Freya, it included the statement of the mage who predicted Freya would be a blessed wolf. It had a detailed plan on how they’d take her and an account of how they executed it. There were also notes of any signs Freya had shown throughout the years she was here. Looked like they lost hope since she went so long with no blessing from The Moon Goddess Diana. That was why they didn’t think twice when they kicked her and her family out.
I was afraid if I told Freya the truth about her adoption she’d leave but I reminded myself of all the reasons she had to stay. I didn’t think knowing she was taken from her birth parents would take away from the love she has for her adopted parents.
As soon as I was going to tell Freya I got a mindlink that an enemy was spotted. Only one member of member of The Cold Lightning Pack was seen in our territory.
I looked at Freya and said, “A member of the Cold Lighting Pack was spotted.”
Distress was evident in the way Freya looked up at me and shrunk down into herself. “Where should we go?” she asked.
“I’m going to take you guys back to the packhouse. If it ends up being a full-scale attack I’ll leave you two with a few warriors,” I answered and turned to Gabriel, kneeling down. “Hey, we’re gonna have to cut this short okay? There’s an emergency.”
Gabriel frowned. “Can we still finish eating all together?” he asked.
“Sure.”
I shifted into my alpha wolf and Freya climbed on with Gabriel and the covered food in their laps. I couldn’t think of the last time Freya was on my back but my wolf took delight in it.
During the trip I mindlinked with the warriors in proximity to the intruder, staying updated and giving instructions if needed. Lastly, I sent out a mindlink to all pack members so they were warned there could possibly be more intruders so they could be cautious.
When we arrived at the packhouse Freya and Gabriel climbed down. Freya rubbed behind my ear and pressed her head to mine for a second, giving my wolf affection as a thank you. It was crazy how a simple touch could feel so good.
I shifted into my human form and we walked in, going straight to the dining hall. As we sat down at the table and took our food out of our bags Gabriel asked a few questions about the emergency and I answered them simply without going into too much detail.
“Can we do this all the time?” Gabriel asked me.
Freya and I looked at each other and she nodded so I said, “We can do it a lot more.” I ruffled up his hair as he smiled.
By the end of lunch, the intruder was captured and I sent out dozens of warriors to make sure there were no others in our territory.
Freya took Gabriel to their room and I wanted to welcome our new prisoner.
We kept our prisoners in a cell in our underground lockup.
The guard in front of our lockup nodded and stepped aside for me to walk in. I headed down the stairs and past a few empty cells until I stood in front of the one-occupied cell. “What do you want?” she asked, seated with her back against the wall and knees pulled up to her chest.
“Were you sent here as a spy?” I asked since she was the only member of her pack present. “And did you come alone?”
She shook her head, not looking at me. “I’m not a fucking spy,” she spat. “I was just passing through. Alone.”
“Why would you pass through enemy territory?” I questioned with my arms crossed.
She took a while to respond and hung her head. “I knew my pack wouldn’t come back here for a couple of weeks and I’m trying to leave.” I looked at her lower shoulder and saw The Cold Lightning Pack’s emblem. “I’m going to officially leave when I’m far enough away that they have no idea where I am.”
I asked more questions but she stuck to the same story.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t going to get any valuable information out of her, so I left. She couldn’t let her leave, she needed to sit for a while, get desperate.
Early morning the next day I walked into the infirmary and saw just the person I wanted to talk to. “Alpha Demetri,” Ginni said, keeping her eyes on her comatose mate.
“I know what you were talking about, the truth about Freya’s adoption.”
Ginni nodded slowly. “Can I trust you to keep it a secret?” she asked, turning to look at me with pleading eyes.
“You can’t,” I answered, without a second thought. “Freya should know why The Cold Lightning Pack is being so relentless. Do you want to tell her or should I?” I wanted to give her the chance first.
Ginni’s eyes glistened from oncoming tears. “I can’t,” she said short of breath. “I just can’t.”
“Then I will,” I said. “I just want to know why.”
“Your father didn’t want to adopt her himself and I was our pack's main childcare provider at the time,” she explained, holding her mate’s hand tightly the entire time. “Luna Vella knew how much I wanted a child of my own and they came to me with the offer. Sam doesn’t even know she was taken from another pack.”
That was all I needed to know, I sighed with nothing else to say and I left.
As I was walking down the hall Beca suddenly grabbed my arm and pulled me into an empty longue closing the double doors behind us. “What is this?” I asked with a raised brow.
Becca pressed her hands together to beg. “Can you please go on a double date with me, Kyle, and Freya?”
“Kyle hates me.” He’s also completely flaked on his work as Beta this week because of it. I’ve been putting off dealing with him because I was in the wrong even though we weren’t very close at the time.
“No he doesn’t,” Becca said. “He just wants you to apologize.” Not gonna lie, I was getting tired of apologizing to everyone. “You're his best friend and you kinda tore his family apart. Apologize to him and we can go on a double date so that he can reconnect with Freya.”
“Freya wouldn’t agree to a date with me,” I said and that was my last defense.
Becca groaned. “Call it whatever you want!” she exclaimed and facepalmed. “Don’t you want to be with Freya anyway? I thought you’d jump at an opportunity for a date.”
“Of course I do but I’m working on our friendship right now, it’s a better bet for now.”
Becca smiled. “Awe that’s so sweet. You’re going to do it anyway, I’m not arguing. I’ll text you the details,” she said before waving and leaving.
I chose not to think about it and accept that I’d have to apologize and go on a double date with them. Becca was going to push as much as she could for it and I didn’t have the energy to go against her.
After that, I left for my office.
I was putting together a checklist of all the things I needed to discuss in my next meeting with my inner council. Most important we had to decide on what we going to do with our prisoner.
That was when Freya barged into my office. “You can’t believe what just happened!” she shouted immediately, slamming the door behind her. “Your Mom wants me to quit my job so I can focus on becoming a great Luna!” Freya sat down on my couch. “I need a time out.” She said and laid down.
So she didn’t come to ask for anything, she just wanted to rant and rest. It was nostalgic and I was thankful for it.
“Hey,” she said in a sleepy tone. “Tell me some good news, Trey.” That was the first time she called me since she got back, it was refreshing.
I thought for a second. “In the fall you can go to that medical school you dreamed of now that you’re a part of our pack again,” I said. “I’ll pay for it.”
Freya laughed. “You used to… say… you would.” She mumbled as she fell asleep.
As I worked my eyes kept wandering over to Freya. It was starting to feel like we were friends again. Was it worth ruining by trying to take it further?
