Chapter Twenty-Five: A Full Moon

Freya’s POV.

The full moon was rejuvenating.

The last couple of days back home were filled with mixed emotions. Our time here was ending and I felt a strange sense of relief. Things would never go back to how they were when I was seventeen but this could be good for our family.

I felt Demetri’s heavy gaze on me as I spoke to Aubrey. She wasn’t someone I’d been very close to but was still a good friend to me while I was part of the pack. “So Alpha Demetri seems interested in you and I’m so sorry but Gabriel looks so much like him I have to ask. Is he his father??” She was a big gossiper but if all my business gets out it doesn’t matter since we’re leaving.

“Yeah he’s Gabe’s father but things are over between us,” I answered. “That’s just how he is, affectionately protective of the mother of his child, not in a romantic way.” I didn’t want to think about Demetri’s feelings for me.

Aubrey shrugged in disbelief and we went back to enjoying the party.

The party was fun but I wanted to turn in early since I haven’t slept much lately. Alpha Carmen pulled some strings so I could go back to the hospital even though visiting hours were over. I wanted to be close to my father so that my ability might work better for him.

Quickly, I fell asleep in the chair next to him holding his hands.

In the morning I found that my father was in the same condition. Even during a full moon with a gift from the moon goddess my father was confined to his coma.

I left so the doctors could prepare him for his transfer.

I stopped by Alpha Carmen’s office with my mother to officially leave the pack. “I, Freya Roman, resign from The Blue River Pack.”

“I, Ginni Roman, and my mate Sam Roman both resign from The Blue River Pack.” Mates were allowed to do that.

After saying our goodbyes we went to the hospital and rode with Dad in the ambulance.

During the ride, Mom and I talked. She was the same as she’s been the last few years but when we passed into The Blood Moon Pack’s territory she glowed. She couldn’t be pulled away from the window. She began reminiscing about her childhood. She told me things I hadn’t heard about. Pack fights, love confessions, and she pointed out where she and Dad found me.

We arrived at the packhouse where Dad was going to be treated. We watched for a second as they moved him but we didn’t want to be in the way. Mom followed me in the parking lot to the moving truck.

All of our stuff was still inside.

Demetri got out of his car and walked to us. “I didn’t tell them to take everything in since we didn’t discuss which rooms you all would be staying in,” he said. “We do have an available bedroom on the floor of the hospital you can stay in Mrs. Ginni.”

“I’d like that,” Mom said

Demetri turned to me. “And the room you’ve been staying in is technically a guest room so I thought maybe you’d want to upgrade,” he said. “Gabriel can have his own room if you stay in the one on the alpha’s floor. It’s big and there’s a smaller room attached by a door. It’s the only one we have available.”

I didn’t want to be any closer to him but we did need a room for Gabriel and his stuff. “I’ll take it.”

Demetri smiled and… it was nice.

Mom went with me to Ashley’s house while they took all our boxes to our rooms.

Since I let Ashley know we were close she left the door unlocked. We walked in and Gabriel gasped when he saw Mom. “Grandma!” He shouted, running to her. “I missed you!”

Mom kneeled down to hug him.

When she told him we would all be joining The Blood Moon Pack he jumped up and down in excitement. “Grandma are you happy to be home??”

Mom smiled and I wasn’t completely sure if she was putting it on for Gabriel or if she meant it. “I am,” she said simply.

I think that was true.

I left Gabriel with Mom so I could talk to Ashley in the kitchen. I told her about my short trip and that we were rejoining the pack. “Yay!” Ashley cheered, grabbing my hands. “This is amazing.”

“It might be.” I mumbled and Ashley hugged me.

“If you have any problems with my brother just tell me,” Ashley said, letting go of me.

I nodded with a smile and we said goodbye.

Mom, Gabriel, and I left and went back to the packhouse.

Out in front, I noticed Courtney and Brandon were in their wolf forms running about together. It was sweet and my wolf began to miss Demetri’s. I hated Avery being lonely but I didn’t want Demetri taking our wolves spending time together to mean anything like he did last time.

I shook the thought and spent the rest of the day with Gabriel unpacking in our new room. Gabriel was running around with tons of energy. “My room is so big!!” he shouted from his room. The door between the rooms was open.

My son's happiness was a good start to this new chapter for us.

The next day while Gabriel was in daycare I went to Becca’s room and knocked on her door so she could fill me in on what we’d tell Sasha.

“What’s wrong?” I asked when I saw Sasha sulking on Becca’s bed. I hadn’t seen her this sad since her mate rejected her.

Becca said, “Demetri broke up with her.” He actually did it.

“I’m sorry Sash,” I said, frowning.

“What am I supposed to tell Mable??” Sasha whined. “Freya,” she stared at me with tears streaming down her face. “Promise me you two aren’t going to get together.”

“Sasha you can’t make her promise that,” Becca said quickly. “Freya you don’t have to.”

“Demetri would still want to be with me if she wasn’t here,” Sasha said. Um… alright. “Why should he get what he wants after what he did to both of us?!”

I already decided that I wouldn’t do that to a friend. I couldn’t say that he wouldn’t want to be with me because apparently he did. We were fated but our obstacles didn’t make it seem that way.

But could I promise Sasha what she wanted?

Becca rubbed Sasha’s back for comfort and changed the subject, “You’re back after a full moon, are you going back for the next one?” she asked me.

I shook my head and pulled my sleeve up to show her my shoulder. There was no pack emblem, it faded when I resigned. “Freya!” I expected something out of Sasha but she just turned over. “Sash Freya is staying!” She shook her.

Sasha rolled back over. “I’m sorry I’m really happy you’re staying.” She smiled sadly. “We all need each other.”

“It’s okay and you’re right we do.”

“I need to go to work,” Sasha said with a groan and got out of bed.

When Sasha left I stared at Becca until she said, “We still need to tell her.”

I wanted to get it out of the way as soon as possible so I could know if I was losing a friend or not. What Demetri said scared me. “So how do we do it?” I asked.

“We need to take a different approach now that Demetri left her,” Becca said.

“Do you blame me?” I asked, hugging myself.

Becca laughed. “Well it’s because of you but it’s not your fucking fault,” she answered. “I told Sasha this was going to happen when they first got to gather. After rejection, most mates get back together, even if they try to be with other people. I don’t think she should keep you from the person the moon goddess you for, and vice versa. It’s not like she stayed away from him so you shouldn’t have to either.”

Becca felt strongly in this but if Demetri did earn my trust and love, I don’t know if it’d feel right to be together.

A couple of days later I stopped by the packhouse infirmary, I wanted to check in on my Dad. Not much was different.

When I was about to leave Adam came in and greeted me with a smile. “I was assigned to treat your Father,” he said. Thank god, he was our best Doctor. “Does this mean you’re staying?”

I nodded. “I don’t suppose there’s room for me in the infirmary?” I asked. “If not I can always work in the city.”

“Freya,” Adam said. “You don’t even have to ask, I could use another nurse. I’ll look forward to you working under me again.” He ended his statement with a wink.

“Thank you so much,” I said with a smile and he smiled back.

I left, feeling content. Work was one thing I wouldn’t have mixed feelings about. I already knew I loved working for Adam and I loved what I did.

After that, Demetri called me to his office.

I walked in leaving the door half open because I was planning on leaving as soon as he told me whatever he needed to. “I hope this is important,” I said.

“It is, I want you to know I’m gonna be meeting with Alpha Cornell soon,” he said… that could have been a text. “I’m hoping we can come to some kind of truce.”

“Is that all?” I asked and he nodded. I kind of expected him to flirt with me but he didn’t. He gave his attention back to his computer. “I’m gonna hire a mage to check things and see if they can prevent pregnancy if they still can. I just want to let you know since it’d be yours.”

“What…?” Said a familiar voice.

I turned around to see Sasha with her heart-broken face pushing the door open wider. I probably should have closed the damn door but I wasn’t planning on telling him this now.

Fuck.
