Chapter 28 The God Maker
Chapter 28 The God Maker
I threw myself at Seraphina before my brain caught up with my body.
My Alpha power burst outward as I shifted mid-leap, claws extended, teeth bared. Three years of rage at this woman—for the forced marriage, for hurting Luna, for sending assassins after my daughter—all focused into one murderous attack.
"Damon, no!" Luna screamed behind me.
Too late. I was already moving.
Seraphina didn't even move. She simply raised one finger, and I slammed into an imaginary wall so hard that bones cracked. The impact sent me flying backward into Marcus, and we both crashed to the ground in a painful heap.
"Really, Damon?" Seraphina asked, studying her fingernails casually. "After everything you've seen, you still think brute force will work on me?"
I tried to stand, but my ribs were broken. Through our soul-bond, I felt Marcus's healing magic flowing into me, putting bones back together. It hurt worse than the breaking.
"Stay down," Marcus hissed. "She's toying with us."
He was right. Seraphina could have killed me with that single motion. Instead, she'd just swatted me away like an annoying bug.
"I'm impressed, honestly," Seraphina continued, floating a few inches off the ground now. "Luna's merging work is even better than I'd hoped. Ninety-seven eras worth of dark magic, all compressed into me. Do you have any idea how powerful that makes me?"
"Powerful enough to be stupid," I growled, finally getting to my feet. "Dark power corrupts. You saw what happened to your future self—she was a monster."
"My future self was weak," Seraphina amended. "She took power slowly, letting it twist her over years. But I've taken it all at once, keeping control. I'm not corrupted. I'm changed."
She motioned, and three floating images appeared in the air—showing different timelines where Seraphina had won.
"Timeline 847: I rule the supernatural world alone." "Timeline 623: I've eliminated all Alphas and rebuilt society in my image." "Timeline 291: I've transcended physical form entirely, becoming pure magical consciousness."
Each image showed a different version of her win. And in every single one, Luna, Marcus, and I were dead.
"You see?" Seraphina said kindly. "I've already won in countless worlds. Now I'm just waiting for Luna to finish her work here."
Luna stepped forward, her Nexus power glowing around her. "I won't join any more timelines. Not if it makes you stronger."
"Oh, but you will," Seraphina answered confidently. "Because if you stop merging, reality collapses totally. Everyone dies—your beautiful daughter Aria included. But if you keep blending..." She smiled cruelly. "Eventually, you'll unify all remaining timelines into one stable world. One beautiful world."
"And then you'll kill her," I said, knowledge flooding through me. "You'll wait until Luna does all the work, then murder her and take control of the unified timeline yourself."
"Gold star for the Alpha," Seraphina mocked. "Luna becomes the Nexus, the anchor point holding all worlds together. If I kill her after the final merge, I inherit that place. I become the god of a unified timeline, with power over every magical being that exists."
Horror crashed through our soul-bond. Luna's fear, Marcus's hopelessness, and my own burning rage mixed together until I couldn't tell whose feelings were whose.
"There has to be another way," Marcus said desperately. "Some way to merge timelines without feeding you power."
"There isn't," Seraphina said simply. "Dark magic is released every time timelines collapse or merge. It has to go somewhere. And since I've opened myself as a vessel, it all comes straight to me. It's actually quite beautiful."
She moved closer, her perverted power making the air itself feel heavy and wrong.
"Here's what's going to happen," Seraphina stated. "Luna will keep merging realities because she's too heroic to let everyone die. Each merge will make me stronger while bringing her closer to becoming the full Nexus. And you two—" she pointed at Marcus and me, "—will watch helplessly because your precious soul-bond makes you too weak to stop me."
"The bond doesn't make us weak," I growled. "It makes us stronger."
"Does it?" Seraphina asked mockingly. "Then why haven't you hit me again? Why is Marcus holding you back instead of fighting beside you?"
She was right. Through our bond, I felt Marcus's restraint mixing with my rage, causing paralysis instead of action. The link that should have made us powerful was keeping us frozen.
"The soul-bond is beautiful," Seraphina added. "But it's also your biggest weakness. Three people sharing feelings means three people sharing fear. And fear makes you pause."
"You're wrong," Luna said quietly. Her Nexus power flared brighter. "The link doesn't make us weak. It makes us understand each other perfectly. And right now? We all understand what we have to do."
Through our relationship, I felt Luna's plan forming. It was crazy. Suicidal. But it might be our only chance.
"Luna, no," I said instantly. "Not that."
"It's the only way," she maintained.
"What are you planning?" Seraphina commanded, her confidence cracking slightly. "What desperate stupidity are you considering?"
Luna looked at Marcus and me, love and apology flowing through our bond. "If Seraphina gets power from timeline merges, then we stop making perfect merges. We make broken ones."
"Broken merges will tear reality apart faster," Marcus objected. "Instead of dying slowly, everyone dies immediately."
"Not if we're fast enough," Luna argued. "We make one massive broken merge—deliberately unstable—that releases so much chaotic energy it overwhelms Seraphina. She's built to take dark magic from controlled timeline collapses. But if we fill her with pure chaos..."
"She explodes," I finished, understanding. "Or gets torn apart by the magic she can't control."
"It'll kill Luna too," Marcus said desperately. "Creating a broken merge that size would destroy the Nexus power inside her. She'd die along with Seraphina."
"Maybe," Luna admitted. "But maybe not. And it's better than waiting for Seraphina's plan to work."
Seraphina's pleasant mask broke. "You wouldn't dare. You're too good, too heroic to give yourself."
"Try me," Luna said coldly.
For the first time since her transformation, Seraphina looked unsure. She could sense Luna's determination through the Nexus power they both touched. This wasn't a trick.
"Fine," Seraphina said finally. "Let's test that theory."
She raised both hands, and reality itself began tearing open around us. Not small cracks—massive rifts that revealed the void between timelines. The void creature that had bowed to her suddenly surged forward, splitting into dozens of smaller beings.
"Kill the Nexus," Seraphina ordered. "Now."
The creatures ran toward Luna. Marcus and I moved to protect her, but we were too slow. The void-things would reach her in seconds.
Luna closed her eyes, reaching for the chaotic power she'd threatened to release.
"Luna, wait!" I shouted. "There's something you need to know about broken merges!"
But I was too late.
Luna grabbed hold of two dying timelines and intentionally slammed them together wrong. Reality screamed in pain as the broken merge tore through dimensions like a nuclear explosion.
Dark magic exploded outward in all directions—not moving toward Seraphina in a controlled stream, but bursting everywhere at once like a bomb. The void creatures disappeared instantly. The rifts Seraphina had opened shut themselves violently.
And Seraphina began crying.
The dark magic she'd carefully absorbed was fighting against the chaos energy from the broken merge. Her body flickered between solid and shadow, unable to hold both types of power at once.
"You little—" Seraphina choked out. "You actually did it!"
But something was wrong. Through our soul-bond, I felt Luna's triumph turning to horror as she understood what the broken merge had actually done.
"Damon," Luna whispered, looking at her hands. "I can't... I can't stop it."
The broken merge wasn't finished. It was still growing, still tearing through worlds. And Luna, as the Nexus, was the anchor point—meaning the destruction was spreading outward from her position.
"Everyone I love is going to die," Luna said, her voice breaking. "And I'm the weapon killing them."
Marcus and I reached for her through the bond, trying to help, but the jumbled energy pushed us back. We could only watch as Luna fought to contain power that was tearing her apart from the inside.
Seraphina's screaming stopped. When we looked at her, she was smiling despite the pain.
"You beautiful idiot," Seraphina laughed. "You just did exactly what I needed."
"What?" Luna gasped.
"A broken merge releases chaos," Seraphina explained, her body stabilizing as she reacted to the wild energy. "And disorder is just another form of power. You didn't hurt me—you gave me the final piece I needed to ascend."
Her form changed, becoming something beyond physical. Something that existed in various timelines simultaneously.
"Thank you, Luna," Seraphina said, her voice booming from everywhere and nowhere. "For making me a god."
And then she reached into Luna's chest, her hand passing through skin like it wasn't there, and grabbed hold of the Nexus power itself.
"Now I'll take what's mine," Seraphina whispered.
Luna's eyes went wide. Through our link, I felt her life force being ripped away.
Seraphina was stealing the Nexus.
And there was nothing we could do to stop her.
"Sleep well, dear Luna," Seraphina cooed as Luna's eyes started closing. "When you wake up—if you wake up—I'll be the god of all reality. And you'll be nothing but a memory of the fool who gave me everything."
Luna fell.
And Seraphina began to glow with stolen divine power.
