Chapter 18 The Pack's Choice
Chapter 18 The Pack's Choice
"I have a soul-bond too," little Aria said, her tiny hand glowing with power. "With someone you really, really don't want to make angry."
Before anyone could ask what she meant, the ground beneath us started shaking. Not earthquake shaking - something else. Something that made every werewolf instinct I had scream danger.
"Jake!" Luna shouted. "Get the pack members back!"
I was still confused from being freed from Seraphina's shadow magic, but Luna's words cut through the fog in my head. Around the battlefield, other Silvermane Pack members were waking up from the dark spell too, looking scared and lost.
"Everyone behind me!" I yelled, using my Beta voice to cut through their fear. "Form defensive lines!"
But that's when I realized we had a bigger problem than Void Beings and evil aunts.
Half the pack wasn't moving to help us.
"Beta Jake," called out Gamma Tom, one of Seraphina's fans. "Our orders come from Luna Seraphina, not from traitors who abandoned the pack."
My heart sank. Even with Seraphina standing next to creatures that wanted to eat our souls, some pack members still followed her. Three years of her authoritarian rule had convinced them that Damon was the real threat.
"Tom, look around!" I shouted desperately. "Seraphina summoned things that want to kill us all!"
"Seraphina's protecting us from the rogues who broke our sacred laws," Tom shot back. Around him, about thirty pack members nodded agreement. "Damon abandoned his mate link. Luna brought shame to our family. Marcus betrayed his Alpha cousin. " I wanted to scream. Couldn't they see that Seraphina was working with monsters?
"Those aren't rogues!" I pointed at the Void Beings. "Those are reality pests! They'll drain every supernatural being in the area!"
"Seraphina explained everything," Tom said firmly. "Those are her allies, here to help restore proper pack order."
That's when I understood the real trouble. Seraphina hadn't just used dark magic to control some of us - she'd spent three years infecting minds with lies and fear. Half the pack genuinely thought Damon's return was the real threat.
"Choose now!" Seraphina called out, her voice carrying supernatural power. "Stand with your true Luna, or stand with the traitors who would destroy everything we've built!"
The pack split right down the middle. Thirty members moved to stand behind Seraphina and her Void Being friends. Twenty-five came to stand with me, Luna, Damon, and Marcus. Everyone else looked confused and scared, not knowing which side meant life.
"This is insane," whispered Sarah, the pack secretary who'd also been freed from shadow magic. "We're about to fight our own people while reality parasites wait to eat us all."
She was right. The Void Beings hung back, watching with hungry delight as we turned on each other. Luna's grandma smiled coldly, like this division had been her plan all along.
"Jake," Luna called softly. "Can you reach them? Make them understand?"
I looked at Tom and the others who'd picked Seraphina's side. These were people I'd grown up with, trained with, protected for years. Tom had been my friend since youth. Now he was looking at me like I was the enemy.
"Tom," I tried one more time. "Remember when we were kids? Remember when you got lost in the woods, and I spent all night looking for you? Remember when I told your mom I'd always have your back?"
For just a second, doubt flickered in Tom's eyes.
Then Seraphina stepped forward. "Jake abandoned you when he chose the rogues over his pack family," she said, her words dripping poison. "He's not your friend anymore. He's your enemy."
The doubt in Tom's face hardened into anger again.
That's when Damon did something that shocked everyone.
"She's right," he said softly.
Every head turned toward him. Luna looked confused. Marcus frowned. Even Seraphina seemed shocked.
"Alpha?" I asked slowly.
"Seraphina's right," Damon repeated, his words carrying across the battlefield. "I did ditch my pack. I did break sacred rules. I did choose my personal desires over my duties as Alpha."
Murmurs spread through both sides of the split pack. What was Damon doing?
"For three years, I searched for Luna while my pack suffered," he continued. "I let my passion damage pack stability. I failed as a leader in every way that counts."
Tom and the other Seraphina fans looked confused but pleased. Finally, Damon was admitting his mistakes.
"But," Damon said, his voice getting louder, "failing as the Alpha I was doesn't mean I can't become the Alpha you need."
He stepped forward, and I felt his power spreading outward - not the cold, controlled energy from before, but something warmer and more stable.
"I'm not asking you to follow me because of bloodline or tradition," Damon said, looking straight at Tom and the others. "I'm asking you to judge me by what I do next."
He turned toward the Void Beings and Luna's grandma, and his expression became absolutely deadly.
"These creatures want to drain every supernatural being in our territory," he said. "They want to eat your children, your mates, your parents. They want to turn our home into an empty wasteland."
The temperature around us dropped as the Void Beings stirred restlessly.
"Seraphina made a deal with them," Damon continued. "She offered them access to werewolf energy in exchange for power. She was ready to sacrifice all of you for her own ambitions."
"Lies!" Seraphina shrieked. But her voice cracked with fear.
"Then prove it," Damon challenged. "Order your Void Being allies to leave our land. Show the pack that their safety means more than your power."
Seraphina's face went white. We all knew she couldn't do it - the Void Beings weren't really her friends. They were her bosses.
"I... they're here to protect—"
"They're here to feed," Luna's grandma interrupted with cold amusement. "On all of you. Seraphina was just the bait to lure you together in one place."
Horror washed over the faces of Seraphina's fans as the truth finally sank in.
"Choose again," Damon said softly. "But this time, choose based on who's actually trying to protect you."
One by one, pack members began moving away from Seraphina. Tom was the last holdout, looking at me with hurt and confusion.
"Jake?" he asked, sounding like the scared kid I'd once searched the trees for. "What do we do?"
"We fight," I said simply. "Together."
Tom nodded and stepped across the imaginary line to join us.
That's when Luna's grandma laughed, and the sound made reality ripple around us.
"How touching," she said. "But it doesn't matter. You see, I've been waiting for exactly this moment - when the pack was finally united again."
She raised her hands, and power began building around her that made the air itself scream.
"Because now I can drain all of your life force at once to complete my transformation into a full Reality Controller."
The power hit us like a wall of ice and fire. Pack members screamed as their energy started flowing toward Luna's grandmother. I felt my strength leave my body, and beside me, others started collapsing.
But then something impossible happened.
Little Aria stepped forward, no longer looking like a normal three-year-old. Her eyes glowed with old power, and when she spoke, her voice echoed with the strength of mountains.
"Great-grandma," she said sadly. "You forgot about my soul-bond."
"What soul-bond?" the grandmother growled. "You're just a child!"
Aria smiled, and the air around her shimmered with golden light.
"I'm soul-bonded to the Alpha Spirit of the entire Western Territories."
The ground beneath us exploded upward as something huge began rising from the earth - something with glowing eyes the size of dinner plates and a howl that shook reality itself.
