Chapter 19 019

Chapter 19 019

Zelyne's POV

Three days.

That's how long the pack gave itself to grieve before the coronation. Three days and then life kept moving whether you were ready or not. I understood the logic. A pack without an Alpha even for a week was a pack with a gap in it and gaps invited things in.

Didn't make three days feel like enough.

Dominic didn't say anything about it either way. Just prepared. Same way he did everything — quietly, steadily, without making his feelings anyone else's problem.

.....,

They came for me in the morning.

Different women this time, pack women who knew what they were doing, and the dress was nothing like the wedding dress. Dark green, heavy, simple. No buttons running up the back, no fuss, nothing that felt like being sealed into something. Just a dress that meant what it was supposed to mean.

I stood in front of the mirror while they worked and thought about the last time I'd stood like this.

That girl in white. Too smooth, too arranged. Nothing real on the surface.

The girl in the mirror now wasn't the same one.

I couldn't have said exactly what was different. Something in the way she held herself maybe. Something less pressed down. Less managed. More like someone actually standing there rather than someone performing standing there.

I looked at her for a moment.

Then I let them finish and went downstairs.

......

The whole pack was out.

Every single person — soldiers, families, the old ones helped to the back, children standing on things to see. All of them facing the stone steps in the cold morning air. The sky was pale and flat and the courtyard had that feeling crowds get when something real is about to happen and everyone knows it.

I took my place to the left of where Dominic would stand.

Luna's position. I'd been told where to go and what to do with my hands and I did it all — straight, still, eyes forward, the way I'd been doing difficult things since I was seven.

Kael leaned in from just behind me before it started. "You look like you belong here," he said. Quiet, just for me.

I didn't say anything back. But it landed.

\---

Dominic came out.

All black again but wearing it differently than the wedding. Not like a man getting through something. Like a man who'd decided something and was done deliberating about it. He walked to the top of the steps and turned and looked out at his pack and the courtyard went silent the way it only does when people actually mean it.

I watched his face.

He went through every face in that courtyard. Slowly. The way you look at something when you're accepting the full weight of it. Nothing showed on him — no nerves, no grief, no performance of strength either. Just there. Fully, completely there.

The elder stepped forward and started.

I knew what was coming — the words, the binding, the formal transfer. Knowing it and standing inside it were two different things.

The warmth started low.

So low I thought I was imagining it at first. A heat spreading outward from my chest, slow, like something that had been under ice for a very long time and was only now beginning to remember what warm felt like.

I kept my face where it was. Eyes forward.

It built.

Not pain — nothing close to pain. More like a room filling up with light from somewhere you can't see, gradual and then all at once, and you can't say which moment it changed. My wolf wasn't flickering. Wasn't pushing against anything. She was just — coming up. Rising like something that had been held underwater finally breaking the surface, and she kept coming, slow and enormous and completely sure of herself in a way she'd never been before.

Seventeen years of nothing and now this.

I locked my knees. Kept breathing. Kept my hands loose at my sides and my face completely still and let it happen inside me where nobody could see it because if I moved, if I made even one sound, something was going to come out of me that I couldn't take back.

Dominic said the words. His voice carried across the courtyard the way a voice does when it belongs somewhere — low and steady and not asking for anything. The elder's hands on his shoulders, the final words, and then something went through the air. Not a sound. A feeling. Like the whole courtyard exhaled at once, like something had shifted and the world had quietly rearranged itself around the new shape of it.

The pack felt it.

I felt it.

My wolf surged so hard my vision went white at the edges for a second.

I did not move.

.....

The pack broke open with noise.

Not like the wedding. Heavier than that, fuller than that. The sound of people receiving something they'd been waiting for.

Dominic looked out at them.

Then his eyes came to me.

I don't know if he meant it. Don't know if it was a choice or just where he looked without deciding to. But they found me across the courtyard and held there and something passed between us that my wolf knew immediately even if I didn't have a word for it yet.

Three seconds.

Four.

I looked away first.

Same as always.

.....

Kael appeared at my side in the movement of the crowd breaking up.

"You alright," he said low.

"Yes."

He looked at me sideways. Knew it wasn't the whole answer. Didn't push.

"He's Alpha now," he said. Half to himself.

"Yes."

We stood there while the pack moved around us. Cold air, pale sky, the noise of the morning filling the courtyard back up again.

I breathed slowly and kept everything inside and stayed on my feet.

That was all I needed to do right now.

Just stay on my feet.

Everything else could wait.
