Chapter 8 He saw it
Lyra's POV.
“Who are you?” My voice shook slightly as I asked.
The man took the book down from his face, bringing his face into view.
Pale white skin, dark brown eyes… I was still looking at his facial features when he snapped me out of it by moving closer to me.
“Just a passerby,” he said calmly.
He moved to walk out of the room but I grabbed his arm and made him turn.
“No passerby gets to enter this place that easily” I snapped. “That's a lie!”
His face was stern and calm at the same time and I could tell right from the start that he isn't one to smile.
“Then it's left to you to believe me,” he said.
I spoke again before he would turn. “What did you hear?”
From the way he dressed, I could tell he's a skilled martial artist. He also had a sword in hand, two books resting in his right armpit.
“I wasn't listening to your conversation, so be rest assured” he said and walked out, slipping out of my sight before I realized.
Not listening? There was no way he wouldn't have heard, unless he was deaf but it turns out, he isn't.
I quickly moved out of the library to go after him but I was unlucky to step out into the hands of Gina, the head maid who had two maids following behind her.
She furrowed her brows seeing me walk out of the library.
She diverted from the path she was walking on and moved to me. I was starting to feel nervous but I looked her in the eyes when she did the same.
“Why are you coming out from there? And why do you look so distressed?” She asked, tilting her head in a way that shows that she was suspicious of me.
She continued. “That's the alpha heir's library. You want to steal his books and sell them knowing they would cost a fortune?”
I looked up at her and was quite surprised at the conclusion she was able to drive at.
“No, ma'am,” I replied. “I just went to check if the place had been cleaned.”
She still didn't look like she believed me. “And how do you explain the distress on your face?”
“I felt like I saw someone walk in the corridor just now” I answered. “The sound of the footsteps didn't sound like that of my fellow maids but more like an athletic person”
She looked at me for a few seconds before she cleared her throat.
“That's right,” she responded. “Lord Elias just exited the door”
Elias. Was that the name of the guy?
“Get back to work.” Gina's voice snapped me back to the room. “There are some crates that needs to be transferred to the back patio, get them there”
I forced a smile to my lips and bowed slightly as she exited with the two maids behind her.
I had lost the guy and I knew he heard everything I talked about with my mother.
Who is lord Elias? I had never heard that name since I've started working in the Alpha's estate.
The crates.
I moved over to the store room at the other end of the mansion and carried one of the crates into my hand.
Goddamn heavy! It was so heavy that I almost couldn't lift it.
There were five crates in total and I'd have to come back to get them one after the other but to get even one to the back patio seemed to be harder than dying.
I struggled to get it out of the door and I was able to.
Every step I took came with a groan. Sweat pooled out of my forehead and dripped down my face but I didn't want to drop the crates just to wipe it off.
It was exhausting but who was I to complain? How would I dare?
A voice came from the sides and startled me.
“Let me help you” That voice…..
I snapped my gaze to the side and my eyes met with the man from earlier. The one Gina called Elias.
He took the crates from me and placed it on the floor while I watched in awe.
“Hold this” he handed his sword over to me and the books he was tucking in his armpit earlier.
I took them from him without hesitation and he carried the crates.
“Where to?” He asked.
“The back patio’’ I answered quickly.
He moved fast and I walked faster behind him, trying to keep up to his pace.
The sword in my hands was heavy. It was the first time I'd be holding a sword but I liked how it felt in my hands.
“About the library…..” my voice rose, low and careful.
Before I continued my words, he cut in. “I told you I wasn't listening to your conversation”
But that wasn't possible!
“But I heard everything,” he added.
I knew it. There was no way he wouldn't have heard what we talked about.
“Be rest assured. It has nothing to do with me so I will just pretend like I heard nothing” he said.
I didn't know whether to believe him and be relieved or start to become careful around him since he knows things about me now.
The back patio was just right at the front and we were almost there. I was glad that he helped even though I was still worried about how I'd get the rest here.
“But…..” he turned to me before he faced his path again.
“Seraphina isn't that easy to please. You won't be able to win her favor that quickly” he said.
I looked at him shocked and terrified. “You just said you'd pretend like you heard nothing!”
He was still staring back at me and I stared back at him with my lips parted in disbelief when someone talked behind us, making us turn.
“What are you two doing?”
Lord Kael was standing behind us, his face twitched in disgust.
