Chapter 17 I hate my mom
Lyra's POV.
“What do you mean?” I asked Gina, my voice trembling slightly.
She walked closer to me, her steps slow and calculated.
“Don't pretend like you don't know” she said scornfully. “Everyone knows you were at the grand hall this morning”
Right! The realization dawned on me that the maids who served the meal probably knew me and they must have heard the discussion between the alpha and everyone on the table.
They must have known the hidden identity I've managed to hide for a short while. The fact that the newly mated Luna is my mother.
“But I find it weird,” Gina smirked as she looked at me closely. “Your mother is the Luna, but you are still watching dishes here as a maid?”
“There's only one reason for that” she said, raising a finger up in the air like she was contemplating.
“She’s not meant to be Luna!” She laughed. “She's a lowly omega just like you”
I didn't talk back to Gina because there was nothing to defend, she was just speaking the plain truth.
She straightened her back, the sly smile on her face disappearing instantly.
“Lady Seraphina had ordered me to keep you busy from now till evening’’ she said. “She wants to see you so worn out that you wouldn't be able to attend the dinner tonight”
I blinked. It wasn't like I wanted to attend the dinner, it's just that I had no choice since the alpha invited me.
“So,” Gina continued. “Get to work!”
“When you are done, report back to me” she added.
She left the mini kitchen immediately and I looked everywhere. After taking a deep breath and trying to calm myself down, I settled down to start washing.
I didn't realize the Alpha's estate uses so many plates until now.
There were different chambers, different buildings and in every one of them, people resided.
The guards were also being fed, the cooks and the maids too.
I scrubbed and washed and rinsed until I got tired of it but I knew I wasn't to give up until I was done.
Soon, I was done washing. I returned to Gina to report to her.
She was already on her way to the kitchen when I saw her.
I bowed slightly. “I'm done with washing, ma'am”
“Good,” she muttered. “Now, you have to make lines for spreading the clothes”
I blinked. “Yeah?”
“Unfortunately, we didn't know how all the lines came down and Lady Seraphina wanted to spread her clothes,” she smiled. “Get the lines back in place”
She turned and left before I could raise an objection.
I knew I had no options but to do it but I wasn't even tall, I won't get to put the lines back to their place.
The laundry lines were stationed at the far end of the backyard of the laundry room. The lines were enough for everyone in the estate to wash their clothes and have it spread.
How all those lines came down at the same time was what I couldn't understand. Or maybe I do understand.
Gina and Seraphina were just trying to give me work to do so they brought all of them down.
I went to grab a stool when I saw the height of where the lines should be.
I stepped on it and tried reconnecting the lines with each other.
The day was sunny and I was sweating so profusely as I tried to get everything done in the sun.
Also, I was starting to feel a way I couldn't describe. I had never been able to describe how I feel whenever it happens.
But then I knew what I had to do, use my suppressants.
I left the ropes and moved to a corner where I was sure no one was watching me.
I dug my hand into my dress and brought out the pouch I always keep with me no matter what.
There was a cream and some pills. I picked two of the pills and swallowed them without hesitation.
I also applied the cream to my face and hands.
That was how I had always done it since I was young and I had never ran out of the pills or the cream because my Mother kept reproducing them even though I don't know how she was doing or getting it.
It was never explained to me why I needed to keep using these things they called suppressants, the only thing I knew was that it hides my scent.
Why should I hide my scent? I didn't understand but I've always obeyed, because that was also what my grandmother had been doing for me before she died.
I was fine and looking like the normal me after a few seconds and I returned to making the line.
I was still making the lines when Mother appeared in front of me. I wasn't surprised to see her, I'm already getting used to the fact that she'll always have something to say.
“Let's talk for some minutes.” She said,
She led me to the laundry room where she dropped the bag in her hands to the floor.
“Take that,” she said. “I don't know whether you have any dress to wear to tonight's dinner but wear that”
“If you get lucky and it happens that the alpha really likes you as his stepdaughter, then he can go against his son and elevate your status’’ she said.
I didn't say a word because I didn't have the strength to argue with her. I just let her speak.
She continued. “I heard that Seraphina had been giving you lots of tasks lately”
“Don't see that as punishment, take them as a way to get close to her and earn her trust,” Mother said.
I scoffed, finally being able to bring words to my lips.
“Washing clothes all night, spending the night at the river and being made to construct spreading lines in the goddamn sun just to earn her trust?” I asked.
Now that I was staring at my Mother, I was realizing how wicked she was. She's a goddamn bitch and I'll spit that to her face if need be.
