Chapter 316
Chapter 316
The morning started peacefully — which should have been Serene’s first warning.
Birds chirped. Sunlight poured in. The mansion was oddly quiet.
Suspiciously quiet.
Serene stretched and turned, expecting Damian still beside her. Instead, his side of the bed was empty… and warm.
“He’s awake already?” she muttered. “That’s dangerous.”
Because a bored werewolf Alpha father was as destructive as three hyperactive children.
She slipped into a robe and walked out of the room.
Then she heard it.
Whispers. Tiny whispers.
Followed by coughs.
Then a dramatic shhh.
Serene squinted. “What are you doing?”
Reid, Luna, and Sia froze like statues at the bottom of the staircase — each of them wearing sunglasses, oversized shirts, and holding walkie-talkies. Behind them was a giant piece of cardboard with the words:
MISSION: SAVE DADDY FROM MOMMY’S CHORES
OPERATION RESCUE
Serene blinked. “What—”
Reid stepped forward. “Mom, stand back. We are trained professionals.”
“Trained by who?” Serene asked.
They all pointed upstairs.
And there, leaning over the railing, wearing his black T-shirt and the most mischievous grin in the world… was Damian.
“Good morning, sweetheart,” he said innocently.
Serene placed her hands on her hips. “What exactly are you three planning with this giant cardboard mission board?”
Luna saluted. “Daddy said today is a no-rules day.”
Sia nodded seriously. “He said your rules don’t count today.”
Serene gasped dramatically. “Damian!”
Damian raised a brow. “What? I’m creating memories.”
“Well, create ones that don’t involve breaking my house,” she snapped.
Reid clicked his walkie-talkie. “Target spotted. Mom is aware. Abort mission—ABORT—!”
“No aborting!” Damian shouted, running down the stairs. “We stick to the plan!”
Before Serene could blink, Damian scooped Reid under one arm and Luna under the other while Sia sprinted toward the kitchen yelling, “PHASE TWO IS A GO!”
Serene ran after them. “What is phase two?!”
Damian grinned boyishly. “Breakfast.”
The kitchen…
…was a war zone.
Flour everywhere. Eggshells in a bowl that definitely did not need eggshells. Pancake batter dripping from the ceiling.
And Sia stood proudly with a whisk twice her size.
“We’re making special pancakes,” Sia said.
“With sprinkles!” Luna shouted.
“And chocolate chips!” Reid added.
“And leftover pizza!” Damian threw in.
Serene stared. “…Pizza?”
Damian held up a slice. “Creativity, sweetheart.”
“Chaos,” she corrected.
Sia laughed softly — that gentle, new laugh she only showed when she felt safe. Serene’s frustration melted a little. Seeing Sia standing there, smiling, without fear… it was worth any mess.
Damian saw that softening in Serene’s eyes and winked at her.
“See? My mission succeeded.”
Then the fire alarm went off.
All five of them screamed.
“BURNING! SOMETHING IS BURNING!” Reid yelled dramatically.
“It’s the pizza pancake!” Sia pointed.
Serene rushed to the pan. Smoke puffed up. Damian grabbed the fire extinguisher and blasted it like a man fighting a dragon.
White foam exploded everywhere.
Everywhere.
The kids cheered.
Serene stared at Damian through the cloud of foam.
“You,” she said slowly, “are not allowed in the kitchen ever again.”
Damian dropped the extinguisher. “Fair.”
He was covered in white foam. The kids were covered. Serene was covered.
And then Damian started laughing.
A deep, warm, unguarded laugh.
The kind that reached his eyes.
Reid climbed onto a chair and shouted, “SNOW FIGHT!”
Before Serene could protest, he flung handfuls of extinguishing foam at Luna and Sia. Luna shrieked with joy. Sia giggled so hard she almost fell over.
Damian reached toward Serene. “Don’t.”
“Damian, don’t you—”
SPLAT.
He smeared foam on her cheek.
Serene gasped. “You did not just—”
SPLAT.
Sia threw foam at Damian.
He turned to her slowly. “Oh, you picked the wrong opponent, little one.”
Sia screamed and ran. The twins chased her. Damian chased all three. Serene chased Damian.
By the time the madness stopped, the entire kitchen was dripping in white.
Serene leaned against the counter, breathless and laughing. “My house… my poor house…”
Sia crawled into her lap. “I’m sorry for the mess.”
Serene hugged her tightly. “You three were having fun. That makes it okay.”
Sia’s smile softened. “Mommy?”
Serene’s chest warmed. “Yes, sweetheart?”
“Is this what real families do?” she asked quietly. “Laugh? Make messes? Not fight?”
Serene swallowed the lump in her throat. “Yes, baby. This is what real families do.”
Damian crouched beside them, wiping foam off Sia’s hair. “And you’re stuck with us now. Forever.”
Sia looked between both of them. “I like forever.”
Then Luna climbed onto Serene’s other knee. “Mommy, when you and Daddy get old, can Sia and I take care of you?”
Reid puffed his chest. “I’ll take care of Dad. He’s heavy.”
Damian scoffed. “Heavy? I’m muscle.”
“You’re fluffy,” Sia corrected.
“FLUFFY?!” Damian shouted.
Everyone burst into laughter.
The chaos, the mess, the broken pancakes, the foam — all of it suddenly felt perfect.
And Serene realized something:
They weren’t a broken family trying to heal anymore.
They were a healed family learning how to live.
Damian reached for Serene’s face, gently brushing flour from her cheek.
“I love this,” he whispered.
Serene smiled. “The chaos?”
“No,” Damian whispered. “You. All of you. My family.”
Her heart fluttered.
Then Luna jumped between them. “KISS! KISS! KISS!”
Reid joined. “KISS NOW!”
Sia giggled and shouted, “KISS OR WE RIOT!”
Damian smirked. “Orders from the generals.”
Serene rolled her eyes and gave him a quick kiss… which made the kids scream like it was a fireworks show.
And in that noisy, messy, chaotic kitchen…
Serene realized something quietly, privately:
They survived everything.
And came out laughing.
