Chapter 299
Chapter 299
Two days had passed since Serene brought Sia into their home.
The little girl had not left the house. She hadn’t even wanted to peek outside. Every shadow, every stranger, every car passing by made her flinch.
Serene had tried to coax her gently, to convince her the world outside wasn’t dangerous. But Sia only shook her head, hiding in blankets, clutching her little backpack as if it were armor.
“She’s scared,” Serene whispered to Mira one morning as they watched Sia slowly sip her hot chocolate at the dining table. “She’s beginning to trust us, but the outside world… she’s not ready yet.”
Mira nodded, frowning. “Those men… they’re dangerous. And she knows it. I wouldn’t go out either if someone kept showing my picture to strangers.”
Serene’s hand brushed Sia’s messy hair. “I know. That’s why she stays inside. And we’ll keep it that way until she’s ready.”
The house was quiet now. Reid and Luna were gone to school, having finally stopped protesting the rules for once.
Reid, however, had a question that had been bouncing around in his little head since the day he met Sia.
“Mommy,” he asked softly during breakfast, spinning his fork in his scrambled eggs. “Why do you call Anna… Sia? I still like her, you know.”
Serene froze, her heart thudding painfully. She forced a small smile and shook her head.
“No, Reid. That’s impossible. She’s… different now. Sia is her real name.”
“But she’s Anna too,” Reid protested. “I told her about my drawing. She… she laughed. And I liked her! She’s… she’s cool.”
Serene sighed, brushing his hair back from his forehead. “Reid… listen to me. She’s been through a lot. And she’s just learning how to live safely. You can’t… think about that right now. You have to understand.”
Reid frowned but didn’t push further. He wasn’t stupid. He just really liked her, and it hurt a little that she didn’t belong fully to his world yet.
Meanwhile, Sia had begun to adapt slowly. She laughed sometimes—small, quiet laughs when Serene or Mira gave her something nice or teased her gently. She was learning to trust, learning that she could eat without fear, sleep without nightmares, and that she wouldn’t be sold or moved again.
Serene had even hired a private tutor to keep her busy. Someone patient, kind, and discreet. She needed Sia’s mind focused, to help her feel normal again, even if the outside world couldn’t yet be safe.
The tutor arrived every morning, setting up a small desk in the living room while Sia sat quietly, still wary but slowly participating.
“You can’t go to school yet,” Serene explained gently. “It’s for your safety. But you can learn here. You’ll catch up in no time.”
Sia nodded slowly, keeping her eyes on the notebook in front of her. She didn’t say much, but Serene could feel her little heart beginning to trust again.
The day passed quietly. Reid and Luna returned from school, full of stories, arguing over little things, like who got the bigger sandwich. Sia watched quietly, her small hand wrapped around the blanket on her lap, smiling faintly when Reid told one of his dramatic stories about lunch.
“Mommy,” Reid asked again in a soft whisper as he played with his little cars on the carpet. “Can I call her Anna?”
Serene shook her head gently. “No, baby. That’s her old name. We call her Sia. She needs it now.”
Reid pouted but stayed quiet this time. Luna, meanwhile, had moved on to showing Sia her favorite stuffed animals, trying to get her to laugh. Sia smiled faintly, letting Luna arrange the toys around her like tiny guards.
Everything seemed to settle into a fragile normal. A fragile, delicate peace.
But then… a sound outside made Serene’s heart skip.
A car.
The driveway gate clicked.
And then a sleek black car drove slowly into the compound.
Serene’s stomach dropped. Her hands froze on the back of Sia’s chair.
The car stopped.
And the driver door opened.
A familiar figure stepped out.
Damian.
Her chest tightened, her mind screamed.
He has no idea. He doesn’t know Sia is here. He doesn’t know she’s been safe for two days. He thinks she’s still lost.
Serene swallowed hard, keeping her composure as she whispered to Sia:
“Stay calm… everything is okay. Just… stay calm.”
Sia’s tiny hand found Serene’s, gripping it tightly.
The moment hung in the air like a storm about to break.
And outside, Damian began walking toward the house… unaware of the life-changing secret waiting inside.
