Chapter 24
Chapter 24
"I'll be right back!" She announced moving towards the entrance.
"Stay safe, remember a very dangerous werewolf might be around here somewhere. Don't stay out too long!" Adam said his eyes focused on the fish.
"Sure," Laila whispered before slipping out of the cave. When she was out, she started transforming into her wolf. The sound of snapping bones filled the air and within seconds, Laila was in her wolf form.
As her transformation got completed, she ran out into the field, listening to the winds as Adam had thought her. She lifted her nose higher in the air, searching for his scent. Of course, the smell of fish was still lingering in the air so it was a bit hard to pick up, but Laila was starting to get a hang of it.
Not long afterward, she picked up his scent. She howled as she sauntered to his side and slowly changed back to her human form.
"Logan," she called, proud that remembered his name. "We have thought about what you told me earlier. What bothers me is that you are going against your Alpha to be here, why should I believe you?" Laila asked him as she folded her hands across her body, keeping the cold air out.
"Truth is, this mission is very bizarre, we are starting to think you are not as bad as they are painting you to be. That's why my alpha sent me to warn you that Kyle Mathews is coming after you," Logan explained. He was red with embarrassment at the conversation because Laila was butt naked.
"So, how long have you worked with your last partner?" Thompson asked as they drove down the road to where they believed Mike would have taken.
"Five years on a roll," Jimmy simply said. He was still very much worried about Mike.
Captain Carter had mentioned he would send someone after him, but what if he resisted. Had he made a mistake? Should he have waited a little while longer for Mike to come through? Questions kept rolling in his head as they drove down the isolated road of the town.
"That's a lot of time to be with someone. I don't think I've dated anyone that long!" Thompson said bursting in laughter. Jimmy stared at him wondering how his reply had turned into a joke.
"What's your plan of execution for this project?" Jimmy asked instead. Thompson's laugh was starting to annoy him. The guy snorted in between his laugh!
"Well, for now, we find Miss Danvers and her partner and bring them in for questioning," he replied finally stopping his silly laugh.
"Where do you think they might be headed down this road?" Jimmy asked. It was better to keep Thompson engaged like this than allow him to crack ridiculous jokes with his silly questions.
"Well, down this road, farther down, actually, we have a lot of caves and then there is an exit into the next town," Thompson replied.
Jimmy placed two of his fingers on his jaw as he thought their options over. As the case was looking, Miss Danvers could be miles away from them as they spoke.
"I believe we can still check the caves for any clue or sign on them," Jimmy responded still very much lost in thought. There was a strong possibility that they might have stayed for a few hours in one of those caves before leaving the city.
"I don't think, they- she will be in that carcasses are not safe. Wild animals roam in and out of there, she won't survive. By the way, why do you keep saying 'they' who is she with?" Thompson asked as he maneuvers the vehicle through a bend.
"We believe she is with a companion. The one the receptionist at that motel claim killed her boyfriend," Jimmy said.
"You mean the ones in my case?"
"Yes, we have reasons to believe your case and this case is somehow interrelated," Jimmy nodded.
Silence fell in the car once again as they continued their journey down the road, looking out of the window to note any strange occurrence. They saw a large log by the side of the road as they passed.
"Did you see that?" Jimmy asked Thompson.
"What did you see?"
"There was a large log on the roadside, do we have any town down there?" Jimmy asked as his brows met in confusion. How did such a large tree trunk, get to the side of the road?"
"I told you, Jimmy, this area is full of wild animals, it could have been any one of them," Thompson responded, returning his focus to the road.
Damon was more than angry about the death of Max and he promised himself that he would not rest until he found out who killed one of his strongest soldiers.
"Alpha what do we do now?" Kevin asked.
Damon looked up at him and sniffled. "You guys go home, I'll stay and find who did this!"
"Alpha, forgive me but are you sure that's the right thing to do? These roads are not safe for one of us to roam around unprotected, even if it's you, we have to go back to New Orleans and gather ourselves. Regain our strength, so that we can fight back!" Kevin said.
"You are saying the right thing. But I can't leave just like that! Remember we still have Logan out there! I can't leave him!"
"Alpha, I understand your worries but you can't help Logan if you are this emotional." Kevin moved close to him and held his shoulders for comfort. "Alpha, think about it. Logan is one person but you, we all depend on you. If something were to happen to you, the council will prosecute all of us! The entire pack will be wiped out!"
Damon heaved a sigh trying to calm his nerves and anger. "Okay," he sighed again. "We are heading back." Kevin patted him on the shoulder and returned to tell the rest of the pack to mount their cars so they could go.
Damon mounted one of the trucks and gave a sign for the journey home to begin. He would make sure he allowed all of them to reach safely, then he would complete the mission he sent Max on. When he finished, he would return and hunt down the one who killed Max even if its the last thing he did.
"Alpha," Henry called from behind the steering wheel.
"Yes," Damon responded.
"I have been studying the pattern of his injury, I think they were claws," Henry said.
"Claws? Are you sure?" He couldn't smell the scent of the person because it had been long he died and the scent had washed away in the winds that blew past that road.
"Totally. I am certain it was a wolf."
Damon had been suspecting Kyle. Adam was ahead of them, not behind. Logan had confirmed that. So there was no way, Adam or Laila could have killed Max. That left him with only one suspect, Kyle Mathew!
"I know who it is," Damon muttered. Kyle was going to pay for what he had done. "I will make them beg for mercy. Even if it's the last thing I do." Damon breathed. He was boiling with anger from deep within him. Kyle and the rest of the council were evil people! This proved that. How could they murder an innocent man for no reason other than their selfish needs!
Max had so much potential and they destroyed it just like that! How would he even begin to explain to Max's mother that her son died in battle? Or was murdered in cold blood by the council's dog!
They were about five hours to Southern California when they saw a police patrol car coming towards them. Damon glared at the two officers as they approached them. They beeped at their vehicle and Henry sent them a salute, hoping they would let them pass. But they waved them to a standstill.
"Slow down," one of the officers said and Henry brought the car to a stop. The rest of the trucks also stopped.
The other officer came down and started checking all the trucks one by one. "Where are you gentlemen heading to?" He said asking them a smile.
Damon kissed his teeth in annoyance but decided to let Henry do the talking.
"We are heading to New Orleans," Henry said with an innocent smile.
"Ah, I see. May I see your papers, sir?" The officer said addressing Damon.
Damon brought out his wallet. Without taking his eyes away from the officer, he took out his Identification card and handed it to him. The officer took the card, still staring at Damon. "You are not much of a talker are you?"
Damon sent him a death glare that if he were a child, he would have peed on his pants. But the officer only grinned.
"Sir, we have had a really bad day, please forgive his manners." Henry pleaded on his behalf.
"I can see that." The officer's eyes finally fell on the card and they increased in size. He turned around to where his partner was talking to the other men and they started exchanging words.
Henry looked at Damon with worry. "Alpha, is there a problem with your ID?"
"No," Damon shrugged. His identification was just fine. The police officer was only trying to create a fuss out of nothing.
The officer continued arguing with his partner and the other brought out something like a card from their pocket to compare. When the both of them looked at the card, they stared back up and their eyes met that of Damon. Damon understood a minute too late what they were holding in their hands.
"Shit!" He exclaimed.
The police officers started approaching them and Damon yelled at Henry, "Drive!"
Without wasting time, Henry brought the car to life and drove away. The other trucks behind are also following suit.
The officers ran back to their car and a hot chase began. They brought out a megaphone from their vehicle and started speaking to them.
"You all have to pull over! Damon Mathews, you have to stand down or we shoot! " they warned.
"Shit!" Damon cursed again. "Just keep driving do not listen to them."
Damon and his men were moving with about five trucks and there was one police car after them. At top speed, the police car didn't stand a chance.
"You have to pull over!" The police officer was saying but Damon and his men were not interested in listening. They were out of there in a matter of minutes leaving the old police car spurting for breath.
"Do you know those men?" Henry asked when they had lost the police car.
"I don't know them, but I recognized the complementary card in their hands. A few weeks ago when we were at that motel, "
"The lonely place?" Henry inquired.
"Yes, that one. I gave the receptionist my complimentary card, so she could call me whenever she saw them again in her motel. I guess the police got to her and took the card away."
Henry stayed quiet as their truck continued flying off the road at top speed. They only reduced their speed when they go to New Orleans.
Damon heaved a sign as their trucks blended with the traffic of the city. Now it wouldn't be so easy to track them down.
"Head straight to the packhouse, I don't want the council to know we have returned," Damon growled to Henry.
Henry swerved the truck to the dirt road that led to their packhouse and the rest of the men followed. The home was no longer a long-distance away.
