CHAPTER 124

CHAPTER 124
ANASTATIA’S POV

I wanted to go back. I needed to be in my mate’s arms with him holding me tight and telling me that everything would be fine. Maybe that realization was what made me feel even worse.

The fact that even after everything I now knew, I still chose him. I’m still choosing to go back to him even though he was one of them. He might be a wolf, but he was different. He was kind and thoughtful and would never do anything to intentionally hurt someone. That was the kind of person that Eric was, and I loved him for that.

Besides he wasn’t one of them, for as long as I had known him he had never looked down on anybody, much less any human, and it wasn’t just me even the time we went to the human city on a date he was particularly polite to the humans around us, and I knew that there was absolutely no way he could be working for the council because he opposed them at literally every turn.

Maybe this was me trying to convince myself; call me stupid if you liked, but this was the first good thing that had happened to me in the entire nine years that I had been in this crazy world, and I was not about to let this ruin it.

I’m sure Mom and Dad would understand; they had always wanted the best for me, so they definitely wouldn’t mind. Besides, my father was a wolf too, so I can’t exactly cut them off completely.

Wait. My dad was a wolf. Didn’t that mean that I was also part wolf? Wow. I was certain that I had no inner wolf… I would have known if I did long ago; maybe those lonely years wouldn’t have been as terrible.

Why don’t I have an inner wolf? Before I could think more on the subject, I heard a knock on the door and a few seconds later ‘wanna be dad’ entered with that bright smile that did nothing but piss me off.

“I see you’re a lot better now.” He wasn’t wrong; this was the first time in a full week that I felt this clear-headed. For the last week, I kept on struggling with the guilt I felt toward my parents. It almost felt like I didn’t deserve to be happy, and even if I was moving on, I shouldn’t be doing it with the very race that led to their demise, but in some way I had come to terms with it. It took me a week of being a literal rollercoaster, but I could think about it now without my heart aching and guilt drowning me like a sea.

“What do you want?” I asked him, bringing myself back to reality. He studied me for a while before letting out a breath. “You wanted to go back?” He asked, studying me carefully.

I blinked at him, not expecting it. When I mentioned going back, I could tell that he was against it. I guess there wasn’t really anything he could do, though. He definitely could not keep me here against my wish. Instead of answering him, I sat there silently, trying to gauge the situation.

Just like that? Was he letting me go? I didn’t buy it one bit. How could he suddenly be so willing to let me go? I wonder what he was planning. I eyed him suspiciously, but he only widened his honeyed smile. If he spread his lips any wider, I could swear they would split.

How did my mother ever even get mixed up with a creep like him? My mother was not the most lively person in the room, but she wasn’t isolated enough to bond with a person like him. I had never liked the man from the very first day I saw him, and I still didn’t know why.

“I know you don’t trust me.” Of course I didn’t. Would he trust himself if he were me? “But I would never harm you.” I knew he wouldn’t; I didn’t know why, but when he said he wouldn’t harm me, I knew it was true, but that didn’t put me at ease, not even a little. If anything, the unease I felt grew. He said he would never harm me, and I knew that already, because apart from being the spitting image of my mother, I was the only blood she had left in the world, and he knew that.

My unease grew because, even though I knew he would never harm me, it wasn’t the same for Eric and every other wolf back at the pack. He might be human, but he was a hunter, and hunters were never to be underestimated.

I kept quiet, watching him for any clues of what he was planning, but his expression remained impassive, not surprising for the leader of the hunters. Another reason to keep my guard up against him. I just wished I had the mind link to reach Eric. I knew that he would be beside himself with worry by now. In the blink of an eye, an entire week had passed. It was the longest we had been apart.

I guess I needed the time. With everything that I had learnt about my past, I needed time to sort through my feelings and thoughts. If he had been here, I couldn’t guarantee that I would have been as decisive as I was now; neither would I see things without my feelings getting in the way. I had a lot of questions, but none of them were for him. The council needed to be abolished, and its members should be punished, and I would do everything I could to make sure that happened.
