CHAPTER 110
CHAPTER 110
Then a knock sounded on the door. We both froze hoping against all hope that it was just our over active imagination. No such luck, the knock sounded again, but this time a lot harsher that the first, and a lot more urgent too .
He let out a growl in frustration, carried me gently and placed me on the bed before walking over to the door and opening it. A panicked Arthur stood at the other side, “King.” That one word was all it took to destroy the previous mood that had been in the room..
The king?! What was wrong with him? I thought the doctor said that everything was clear already, so what had happened this time?! I quickly adjusted my clothes and hurried out of the room, hot on Eric’s trail. We reached the hospital’s clinic and for the fourth time today my senses were overwhelmed with the smell of antiseptic and medicine.
Eric ran ahead of me and eventually reached the door before ne. I don’t know what it was we both heard in Arthur’s voice that increased our sense of urgency, but j was glad it did. When we got to the door of the King’s ward I stopped for a moment to catch my breath as I glanced at his form on the bed.
That short look was enough to make all the blood in my face drain away and freeze me in my spot. His skin was ashy like he hadn’t seen sunlight in weeks. I couldn’t move, I was frozen in place lost in a far away memory. I couldn’t get out of my head.
For the longer of times I was lost in a memory that I wished I never had to relive. My brain took me back to that night eight years ago, when i was just a little girl coming beck from school, like everyone else, only to open our living room door and see my beloved father lying there, lifeless in a pool of his own blood.
This was the exact colour of his skin back then, I thought eying his skin intently. I couldn’t even take a step further into the room, I felt my limbs tremble all over as I stood by the door and I had to grab onto the doors handle for support.
I focused all my attention on breathing deeply, in and out, anything to take my mind out of the prison it was in currently. Eric walked over to the doctor and grabbed him by his collar, lifting him off the floor. “What is going on? Why does he look like this?” He asked, in a voice so low that if the room was not as silent as it was, I would not even have noticed or heard that he said a word.
The poor doctor could barely get a word past hid throat. I might have pitied him a little bit more if I understood his reasons why., but j didn’t and neither did my mate, and he definitely was not going to be smiling with him any tome soon. “Answer me”. He said through grit teeth.
The doctors opened his mouth to speak again, but he was cut off by a cough and sputtering. The scene felt so surreal. This was the same man. Who sat with the council to judge me a few weeks ago. The same man whose daughter had cried over him because of his exceptionally high standards that he had for her.
He was a father who had tormented his children while he was alive, but yet, they loved him just the way he was. My gaze landed on the queen herself. I cannot even begin to imagine how it feels to see hour mate in this condition. The one person that you were to give your all for the rest of your entire life.
You may think that they had probably spent enough time together, but when you’re in the arms of the one you love the most, time ceases to exist, everyday blurs into the other, until years seem like weeks and hours like seconds.
She stood by his side looking at her husband’s form with that lost look in her eyes. I couldn’t even imagine what you was going through her head. I scanned the room, looking for a familiar teenage princess, finally saw her sitting in the corner with her knees to her chest.
Once upon a time she was daddy’s little girl, and she might still be his little girl, but in his heart.... The sputtering coming from the bed increased as the king opened his eyes and they fell on me. The queen quickly speared me with a piercing gaze, that told me all I needed to know. I was not wanted here, so I’d rather leave any way.
I turned my back to them, but not before sending a quiet nod of encouragement in my mate’s direction. Just before I crossed the door he choked out one word that carried such a powerful meaning, but I didn’t completely understand, “No.” He said before he continued wheezing.
My entire body froze as those words left his lips. I turned slightly to look into his eyes, he met my gaze head on and did not even for once look away. Was he saying I should not leave? What fudge he mean by ‘no’? I tried taking a step away, but he shook his head vigorously, I stepped and took a step towards the bed he lay and gr remained still, almost like he was eagerly waiting for me to come closer.
The queen herself didn’t also understand what was going on, but she studied the interaction between myself and her husband intently. She understood what he wanted, so she didn’t try to stop me when I kept on takin steps forward until I was right beside his bed. He held my hand as he struggled to catch his breath.I took more steps towards him.
