Chapter 57 The Knight Of Violet

Chapter 57 The Knight Of Violet
Kieran stood on the surface of the black lake. The water under his boots was as hard as iron and as cold as death. He looked at his hands. They were no longer the hands of a man who spent his nights reading books or drinking coffee in a diner. The skin was pale, almost translucent, and thick violet veins pulsed under the surface like glowing wires.

The pain was gone. The crushed hip that had made him scream only minutes ago was now solid and stronger than steel. His shoulder, which had been a mangled mess of teeth marks and bone, felt powerful. But it was a hollow strength. It didn't feel like his own muscles were doing the work. It felt like the Iron Peak was wearing him like a suit of armour.

"Lila!" Kieran shouted. His voice didn't sound like a man's voice. It had a metallic ring to it, echoing off the high stone walls of the cavern.

He lunged toward the iron doors of the tower. He didn't run; he blurred. His speed was so great that the air hissed as he passed. He slammed his fist against the black metal doors.
BOOM.
The sound was like a cannon going off. The entire cavern shook. Dust and pebbles rained down from the ceiling. But the doors did not move. They didn't even have a scratch.

"The Queen is resting," a voice whispered in his ear.

Kieran spun around. The Keeper of the Toll was standing right behind him on the ice. The old man’s milky eyes were fixed on Kieran’s chest.
"What did you do to me?" Kieran grabbed the old man by his fur collar. He expected the Keeper to be heavy, but he felt as light as a bag of dry leaves. Kieran could have snapped his neck with two fingers. The power was intoxicating, and that was the most terrifying part.

"I gave you what you asked for," the Keeper said, his voice undisturbed. "You wanted to save your pack. You wanted to protect the Thorne Queen. Now, you have the power to do it. You are the First Knight. You are the blade of the Iron Peak."
Kieran let him go, his hands shaking. "I'm a wolf. I’m the Alpha of the Shadow Moon."

"You were a wolf," the Keeper corrected. "Then you were a man. Now... you are the shadow that walks before the Queen. Look at your people, Alpha. See if they still recognise their King."

Kieran turned toward the shore. The pack was huddled together in the black sand. Ronan, Kael, Sarah, and the others were staring at him. But they weren't cheering. They weren't running to him to celebrate his recovery.

They were cowering.

Even Ronan, his own brother, had his tail tucked between his legs. He was in his human form, his face pale and eyes wide with a fear Kieran had never seen before. When Kieran took a step toward the shore, the pack moved back as one.
"Ronan?" Kieran called out. "It's me. I'm okay."
"Stay back, Kieran," Ronan whispered. He held up a hand, his fingers trembling. "You don't smell like Kieran. You don't even smell like a shifter. You smell like... the Well. You smell like cold lightning and old blood."

"I saved us!" Kieran shouted, his frustration causing a spark of violet fire to leap from his fingertips. The fire hit the black sand, turning it into glass instantly. "I killed the machine! I got us to the tower!"

"Lila saved us," Kael said, stepping forward. He was still holding his broken arm, but his eyes were hard. "She paid the price. You just... you're just the result. Look at the water, Kieran. Look at your reflection."

Kieran looked down at the black lake. He didn't see the handsome, tired man with the kind eyes. He saw a warrior with skin like marble and eyes that were solid, glowing violet pits. There was no white left in his eyes. There was no brown. He looked like the Bone-Wolves. He looked like a nightmare.

"Toby, don't look," Sarah whispered, pulling her son’s head into her chest.

That hurt more than the Bone-Wolf’s teeth. Kieran realised the Keeper hadn't just healed him; he had alienated him. He was now a monster to the people he had died to protect.

A muffled explosion rocked the cavern. It didn't come from the tower. It came from the ceiling, near the staircase they had just descended.
"They’re through," the Keeper said, his voice flat.
High above, the stone wall blew inward. A shower of rocks and dust fell into the cavern. Through the hole, dozens of ropes dropped down. Figures in black tactical gear began to slide down the ropes. These weren't just soldiers. These were the "Black Wolves" the SOC’s elite unit of human-wolf hybrids, enhanced by drugs and technology.

They hit the ground and immediately fanned out. They carried rifles that glowed with blue energy anti-shifter pulse rounds.

"Targets sighted," a voice crackled over a radio. "Large group of hostiles on the shore. One high-value target on the lake. Proceed with extreme prejudice."

The Black Wolves didn't wait for a parley. They opened fire.

The blue pulses hissed through the air. One hit a warrior named Torin in the shoulder. He let out a scream as the energy scrambled his nervous system, forcing him back into a painful, half-human shift.

"Protect the children!" Ronan yelled. He shifted into his amber wolf and stood over the pups, but he knew they were outgunned. The blue rounds were designed to shut down wolf magic.
Kieran felt a cold rage rising in his chest. It wasn't the hot, red rage of a wolf. It was a cold, violet ice that flowed through his veins. He didn't think. He didn't plan. He simply moved.

"Kneel," Kieran whispered.
He didn't say it to the pack. He said it to the shadows.

Thousands of red eyes snapped open in the darkness around the lake. The Bone-Wolves, which had been sitting like statues, stood up as one. Their skeletal joints clicked. Their hollow chests whistled with a ghostly wind.

"Protect the pack," Kieran ordered, pointing his hand toward the SOC soldiers. "Kill the hunters."
The Bone-Wolves didn't bark. They didn't howl. They launched themselves across the cavern like white arrows.

The SOC soldiers opened fire. The blue pulses hit the Bone-Wolves, but the monsters didn't have nervous systems to scramble. They didn't have flesh to burn. They were made of ancient magic and calcified bone. The energy rounds simply bounced off their ribs.

The screaming began a second later.
A Bone-Wolf tackled a soldier, its teeth snapping through a Kevlar helmet like it was made of paper. Another soldier tried to use a flamethrower, but the Bone-Wolf simply walked through the fire, its white bones turning black but its red eyes never flickering. It tore the fuel tank from the soldier's back, causing an explosion that lit up the cave in a hellish orange.

Kieran didn't stay on the ice. He blurred toward the fight.

He reached the first Black Wolf soldier. The soldier turned his rifle toward Kieran’s chest. Kieran didn't dodge. He grabbed the barrel of the gun with his bare hand and twisted. The steel crumpled like a soda can.

Kieran punched the soldier in the chest. His fist went through the tactical vest, through the ribs, and out the back. He didn't feel the impact. It was like punching through wet cardboard.

He pulled his hand out, but there was no blood on his skin. The violet energy around him had vaporised the liquid before it could touch him.
"Kieran, stop!" Ronan’s voice reached him through the chaos. "You're killing them! They’re retreating!"
Kieran looked around. The elite SOC unit was being decimated. The soldiers were throwing down their guns and trying to climb back up the ropes, but the Bone-Wolves were jumping thirty feet into the air, pulling them down like spiders catching flies.

Kieran looked at his hand. He looked at the bodies on the floor. He didn't feel guilty. He didn't feel sad. He felt... satisfied. The "Knight" inside him wanted more. It wanted to climb the ropes and kill everyone in the world who had ever looked at Lila with a weapon in their hand.

"Enough!"

The voice came from the tower. It wasn't a shout; it was a ripple in reality.

The Bone-Wolves immediately stopped. They froze in place, some with their jaws still clamped around a soldier’s leg. They slunk back into the shadows, their red eyes dimming.

Kieran turned toward the tower. The iron doors were still closed, but a figure was standing on the balcony high above.

It was Lila.

She was wearing a gown made of white lace and black iron thorns. Her hair was no longer brown; it was a shimmering, metallic silver that flowed down her back like a waterfall. Her skin was as white as the Bone-Wolves, and her eyes... they were twin suns of violet light.

"Let the survivors go," Lila said. Her voice filled the cavern, sounding like a thousand voices speaking in unison. "Let them go back to their masters. Tell them the Thorne Queen has returned. Tell them the mountain is no longer a grave. It is a throne."
The surviving SOC soldiers didn't wait. They scrambled up the ropes, leaving their dead and their equipment behind. They didn't look back.
Lila looked down at the shore. She looked at the Shadow Moon pack. She looked at Ronan, who was shaking with fear. She looked at Toby, who was hiding behind his mother.

"My people," she said. "You have walked through the fire. You have paid the toll. You are no longer refugees. You are the First Pack of the New World. My Knight will lead you to the upper halls. There is meat. There is warmth. There is safety."

She looked at Kieran. For a second, just one second, the violet suns in her eyes softened.
"Kieran," she whispered.

"Lila, come down," Kieran said, his heart aching with a human pain that the violet power couldn't erase. "We can leave this place. We can go back to the woods."

"There is no back, Kieran," she said. She turned and walked back into the darkness of the tower. "There is only forward. Come. We have a world to reclaim."

The doors of the tower clicked shut.
Kieran stood alone on the black ice. He looked at the pack, who were already starting to follow the Keeper toward the upper halls. They didn't look at Kieran as they passed. They kept their eyes on the ground.

He was the hero. He was the survivor. He was the Knight.

But as Kieran looked at his glowing violet hands, he realised that the "Simple English" version of his life was over. He was no longer a man. He was a weapon. And his Queen was no longer a girl. She was a god.
