Chapter 49 The Golden Alpha

Chapter 49 The Golden Alpha
The cavern was a nightmare of light and sound.

The SOC soldiers did not stop just because Kieran had climbed out of the water.

To them, he was just another "anomaly" to be collected or killed. They raised their UV projectors, the blue light humming with a deadly energy.

"Fire!" the Lead Auditor shouted from the ropes.

But Kieran was not the same man who had crawled into the cave. The golden light on his skin wasn't just a color; it was a shield. As the soldiers fired their beams of artificial sunlight, Kieran stepped in front of Lila. Usually, that light burned the Thorne curse like acid. But when it hit Kieran’s golden aura, the light simply bounced off the walls.

"My turn," Kieran growled.

He didn't shift into a wolf. He didn't have to.
He moved with a speed that was impossible for a human. He was a blur of gold and black shadows.

He hit the first line of soldiers like a wrecking ball. He didn't use claws; he used his fists, and every punch landed with the weight of the mountain behind it.

"He’s using the Well's energy!" Selena shouted, ducking behind a stone pillar. "He isn't just an Alpha anymore he’s the mountain’s protector!"
Inside Lila’s head, the silence was finally over. It wasn't just a whisper anymore; it was a roar. She could feel Kieran’s heart beating in sync with hers.

She could feel his protective rage, his relief, and his total devotion to her.

Lila, use the roots, Kieran’s voice echoed in her mind. Don't fight the mountain. Command it.

Lila closed her eyes. She stopped trying to hold the violet power back. She opened her heart to the Deep Well and the white trees.

"Enough of this!" she screamed.

She slammed her palms onto the cold stone floor. The violet light didn't just flash; it flowed into the ground like water. From the ceiling and the walls, thick, bone-white roots exploded outward.

They didn't just grow they hunted. They wrapped around the SOC soldiers’ legs, pulling them into the air. They crushed the UV projectors and snapped the "Spirit Cages" like they were made of tin.

The Lead Auditor landed on the ground, his grey suit covered in cave dust. He pulled a small, silver device from his pocket a "Reset Switch" designed to overload a supernatural anchor.

"You think you’ve won?" the Auditor hissed, his eyes wide with madness. "If I can't harvest this power, I’ll blow this mountain into the sky!"

The Auditor pressed the button.

A high-pitched whistle started to come from the drill bit in the ceiling. The humans hadn't just come to capture Lila; they had planted a "Mana-Bomb" in the drill. It was designed to suck all the energy out of the Dead Zone and then explode, killing everything for miles.

"The Well!" Selena cried out. "It’s sucking the water up! If the Well goes dry, the mountain collapses!"

Kieran looked at the Well. The black water was being pulled upward in a giant vortex, feeding the bomb in the ceiling. The cavern began to shake.

Huge rocks fell from the ceiling, crushing the black trucks above and sending more debris down on the pack.

"Kieran, we have to stop it!" Lila shouted, her hair flying in the magical wind.

"We can't stop it from the outside," Kieran said, looking at her. He knew what had to be done. The "True Shield" had one final job.

He grabbed Lila’s hands, their gold and violet lights mixing to create a brilliant white flame.
"Together," he whispered.

They didn't run away. They ran toward the Well.

They jumped into the vortex of water together, using their combined bond to act as a "plug." Kieran used his golden strength to stabilize the energy, while Lila used her violet power to "re-write" the bomb's code.

Through the bond, they became one being.

They saw the history of the pack, the pain of the Thorne line, and the future they could have if they survived.

A massive pulse of white light exploded from the Deep Well. It wasn't a destructive blast. It was a wave of pure, neutralizing energy. It traveled up the drill, through the mountain, and out into the night sky.

Every piece of SOC technology for ten miles turned off. The helicopters' engines died, forcing them to glide to emergency landings.

The frequency hum stopped forever. The "Mana-Bomb" didn't explode; it turned into a shower of harmless white petals that drifted down through the holes in the ceiling.

When the light faded, the cavern was silent.
The SOC soldiers were unconscious on the floor, wrapped in roots. The Lead Auditor was gone, vanished into the shadows of the tunnels.

Kieran and Lila lay at the edge of the Well.

The water was once again still and black.

Kieran’s skin was no longer glowing gold, and Lila’s eyes were back to their soft, chocolate brown. But when they looked at each other, they didn't need a glow to know the truth.

I see you, Kieran thought.

I’m right here, Lila replied.

The bond was quiet, steady, and unbreakable.

They have defeated the SOC and saved the mountain, but as Ronan and Mara help them to their feet, Selena points to the entrance of the cavern. A new figure is standing there. It isn't a soldier, and it isn't the old man.

It’s a woman in a white dress, looking exactly like the first Thorne woman from the mural. She holds a single jasmine flower.

"The debt is paid," she says. "But the world now knows what you are. They will never stop coming”
