Chapter 161 The Line Drawn

Chapter 161 The Line Drawn
Aria woke first. She didn’t know when they fell back asleep.

Her eyes opened slowly, adjusting to the soft brightness of the room. For a moment, she simply lay there, aware of the warmth at her back, the steady presence behind her.

Kane.

His arm was draped over her waist, his hold firm even in sleep. His breathing was even, controlled, but deeper than usual.

That, more than anything, held her attention.

She turned her head slightly, just enough to look at him.

He did not stir.

Aria studied him for a moment longer than she intended.

Then she shifted carefully, turning within his hold until she faced him fully.

His eyes were still closed.

There was no tension in his jaw. No guarded edge in his expression. Just stillness.

Her hand lifted without thought, her fingers brushing lightly along his cheek, tracing the line of his jaw.

Kane’s eyes opened.

“You are staring,” he said, his voice rough with sleep.

Aria did not pull her hand away.

“I was watching you sleep,” she replied.

“Don’t be weird.”

Her lips curved faintly.

Kane’s gaze sharpened slightly as it settled fully on her.

“Did you sleep well?” he asked.

“I did,” Aria answered.

“Good,” he said.

Something about the way he said it made her pause.

“You sound surprised,” she said.

“I am not,” Kane replied. Then, after a brief pause, “I am satisfied.”

Aria shifted, easing out of his hold and sitting up.

The movement broke the stillness just enough.

Kane did not stop her.

But his eyes followed.

“You are thinking,” he said.

Aria swung her legs over the side of the bed.

Kane pushed himself up, the movement controlled, deliberate. He leaned back slightly against the headboard, his gaze still fixed on her.

“About what?” he asked.

Aria did not turn immediately.

She reached for the glass of water on the table, took a small sip, then set it back down.

Only then did she look at him.

“We need to decide how this happens,” she said.

“It will happen in the arena,” Kane replied.

Aria shook her head.

“That is where it ends,” she said. “Not where it begins.”

Kane’s expression shifted, just slightly.

“Continue.”

Aria stood, moving slowly across the room as she spoke.

“Devon will not wait quietly,” she said. “And Victoria will not stay still while she thinks she still has a claim.”

Kane’s jaw tightened at that.

“She does not,” he said.

“I know that,” Aria replied. “She does not.”

Her gaze met his again.

“But she believes she does.”

Silence.

Kane did not interrupt.

“We need to control the ground before they try to,” Aria continued. “That means choosing the time. The place. The terms.”

Kane watched her carefully.

“You think they will move first.”

“I think they already are.”

Kane’s posture shifted forward slightly, his focus narrowing.

“Explain.”

Aria folded her arms loosely.

“Victoria did not react yesterday,” she said. “Not the way she should have.”

Kane said nothing.

“That was not restraint,” Aria added. “That was calculation.”

Kane’s eyes darkened.

“And Devon,” she continued, “he wanted you to react. He pushed. Repeatedly.”

“I noticed.”

Aria nodded.

“He is trying to pull you into something uncontrolled.”

Kane’s voice dropped.

“He will fail.”

“I know,” Aria said. “But that does not mean he will stop trying.”

The shift in him was immediate.

“You want to set the terms before they do,” he said.

“Yes.”

“And you want it public.”

Aria did not hesitate.

“Yes.”

Kane took a step closer.

“That removes their ability to twist it,” he said.

“It removes their ability to hide,” Aria corrected.

Then Kane nodded once.

“Agreed.”

Aria exhaled softly.

“Good.”

But Kane did not step back.

“If we do this publicly,” he said, “there are no corrections.”

Aria held his gaze.

“I am aware.”

“You understand what that means,” he said.

Aria stepped closer until there was no distance left between them.

“I do,” she replied.

Kane’s gaze searched hers, measuring, confirming.

“And you still want it.”

“Yes.”

A beat of silence passed.

Then Kane nodded once.

“It will be announced today,” he said.

Aria’s shoulders relaxed just slightly.

“Good.”

But before she could step away, Kane’s hand closed around her wrist.

She looked down at it, then back up at him.

“There is one more thing,” he said.

Aria’s brow lifted.

“And what is that?”

Kane held her gaze.

“When it happens,” he said, “you stay within my line.”

Aria’s expression shifted.

“That sounds like an order.”

“It is.”

She tilted her head slightly.

“And if I step outside it?”

Kane did not hesitate.

“You will not.”

That earned the faintest hint of a smile from her.

“Now can you please relax and stop stressing about this?”

“I’m not stressing,” she said, a little too quickly. “I’m just… thinking ahead.”

“You are always thinking ahead,” Kane said, a faint edge of amusement in his voice.

“No, I’m not.”

His mouth curved slightly.

“Are you sure about that?”

Aria opened her mouth to respond, but the words didn’t come as easily this time. He was already watching her too closely, already reading past what she said into what she didn’t.

“You do not trust them,” he said.

It wasn’t a question.

Aria exhaled softly.

“No,” she admitted.

Kane stepped closer.

“Good,” he said. “You shouldn’t.”

The words settled between them, steadying something that had been tightening beneath her composure all morning.

Her shoulders dropped just slightly.

Kane noticed.

His gaze shifted, not away from her, but deeper.

“Still worried?” he asked.

Aria hesitated.

Then, quieter now,

“A little.”

That was all it took.

Kane closed the remaining distance between them, one hand coming up to her jaw, tilting her face toward his.

“Then stop thinking,” he said, his voice lower now. “For a moment.”

Aria’s breath caught, just slightly.

“And do what?” she asked.

Kane’s thumb brushed along her lower lip.

“Focus on me.”

The moment stretched.

Then he leaned in.

The second her lips met his, everything else dropped away.

Not faded.

Not softened.

Gone.

Aria’s arms slid around his waist immediately, pulling herself closer as her lips parted for him without hesitation. Kane moved with her, one hand sliding to the back of her neck, holding her there as his mouth deepened the kiss, slow at first, then harder, more deliberate.

“You have no idea what you do to me, Mrs. Pierce,” he said against her lips.

Her breath broke.

His name barely made it out before he kissed her again.

This time there was no restraint.
