Chapter 157 Terms of Power

Chapter 157 Terms of Power
The silence did not last long.

It broke the moment Maya moved.

Not violently. Not with the same force that had driven the shift. But with something quieter. Controlled in a way that did not match what they had just witnessed.

Her chest rose and fell heavily, each breath still uneven, but no longer fractured. The wild edge in her eyes flickered again, gold pressing forward before settling back.

Marcus did not move away from her.

“Maya,” he said carefully.

The wolf’s gaze snapped to him.

There was recognition.

Not complete. Not steady. But it was there.

Aria felt the shift in the space immediately.

“She can hear you,” Aria said softly.

Marcus nodded once, his focus never breaking.

“I know,” he said.

Maya shifted her weight slowly, her claws dragging lightly against the dirt as she pushed herself upright. The movement was unsteady at first, like she was learning the shape of her own body in real time.

Kane stepped closer, his presence steady but controlled.

“Do not push her,” he said.

Marcus did not look back.

“I am not,” he replied.

Maya’s ears twitched slightly at the sound of Kane’s voice. Her gaze moved to him next, and for a second, something sharper passed through her expression.

Awareness.

Then it softened again.

Aria exhaled slowly.

“She is still in there,” she said.

Maya let out a low sound, not quite a growl, not quite a response. Her body tensed briefly, then eased again, as if she was testing the limits of her control.

Marcus shifted slightly, lowering himself just enough to meet her at eye level.

“You are alright,” he said.

The words were steady.

Certain.

Maya’s head tilted faintly.

Then, slowly, she took a step back.

Not in fear.

In restraint.

Marcus saw it immediately.

“She is holding herself back,” he said.

Kane’s gaze sharpened.

“Good,” he said.

Aria stepped closer, her voice calm.

“We need to get her inside,” she said. “She cannot stay out here like this.”

Marcus nodded.

“Maya,” he said again, more firmly now. “We are going back.”

There was a pause.

Then Maya took another step.

This time forward.

Toward him.

The decision was hers.

Kane turned slightly toward the guards.

“Clear the path,” he ordered.

They moved at once.

The return was slower than the chase had been.

Measured.

Every step watched.

Maya stayed close, her movements still uneven but no longer erratic. Marcus remained beside her the entire time, adjusting his pace to hers without thinking.

Aria walked on her other side, her senses still extended, monitoring every shift in energy, every fluctuation.

Kane led.

By the time they reached the pack house, the tension had not eased. It had only changed.

Controlled.

Contained.

The guards at the entrance froze for half a second at the sight of Maya before quickly stepping aside.

No one spoke.

Inside, the air felt different.

Heavier.

Marcus guided Maya toward the medical room again, slower now as they crossed the threshold she had broken out of minutes earlier.

“Easy,” he said.

She followed.

That alone did not go unnoticed.

They got her back onto the bed with careful precision. Not forcing. Not restraining. Giving her space while keeping her grounded.

Aria moved immediately, checking her condition.

“Her vitals are stabilizing,” she said after a moment. “Faster than they should.”

Kane watched silently.

Marcus remained close, his hand resting lightly against Maya’s shoulder, not holding her down, just there.

Maya’s eyes flickered again, gold pressing through briefly before settling.

Then, slowly, her body began to shift back.

It was not as violent as before.

Still painful.

Still real.

But controlled.

By the time it ended, she was still.

Human again.

Her breathing evened out gradually, and after a moment, her eyes opened.

“Maya,” Marcus said.

She looked at him.

This time, there was no confusion.

“I remember,” she said quietly.

Relief moved through the room, subtle but present.

Aria let out a breath she had not realized she was holding.

“You are alright,” Aria said.

Maya nodded faintly.

“I think so,” she replied.

Kane stepped forward slightly.

“We will monitor you,” he said. “You are not leaving this room again tonight.”

Maya did not argue.

Marcus stayed.

Of course he did.

Aria glanced at Kane, and he gave a slight nod.

They stepped out, leaving Marcus with her.

The hallway felt quieter than before.

But not calm.

Not yet.

They walked in silence for a few moments, both of them processing what had just happened.

Then a voice stopped them.

“Alpha.”

They turned.

One of the elders stood a few steps behind them, his expression serious, measured in a way that immediately shifted the tone again.

Kane faced him fully.

“What is it,” Kane said.

The elder did not waste time.

“What happened tonight changes things,” he said.

Aria’s gaze sharpened slightly.

“In what way,” she asked.

The elder looked between them.

“In every way that matters,” he said.

Kane’s expression did not shift.

“Be specific,” he said.

The elder nodded once.

“The challenge Victoria initiated is no longer just political,” he said. “It is structural.”

Aria frowned slightly.

“What are you saying,” she asked.

The elder held her gaze.

“I am saying that your position is not as secure as you think,” he said.

Kane’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“Explain,” he said.

The elder did.

“You hold power through conquest,” he said. “Through strength. Through recognition.”

He paused briefly.

“But not through union.”

The words settled.

Aria understood first.

“You mean marriage,” she said.

The elder nodded.

“Yes,” he said.

Kane’s gaze hardened slightly.

“We are already mated,” he said.

“That is not the same,” the elder replied.

Silence stretched for a second.

Then he continued.

“Victoria is presenting herself with a bonded Alpha,” he said. “If they formalize that union before you do, their claim strengthens significantly within council law.”

Aria’s chest tightened slightly.

Kane remained still.

“We are planning to make it official,” Aria said.

The elder’s expression did not soften.

“Then you no longer have the luxury of time,” he said.

Kane studied him.

“How long,” he asked.

The answer came without hesitation.

“Three days,” the elder said.

The number landed with weight.

Aria glanced at Kane.

Kane did not look at her immediately.

His focus remained on the elder.

“If we do not,” he said.

The elder met his gaze.

“Then you walk into that challenge at a disadvantage,” he replied.

Silence settled again.

He did not add anything more.

He did not need to.

After a moment, he inclined his head slightly and stepped back.

Leaving them there.

Aria exhaled slowly.

“Well,” she said quietly.

Kane finally looked at her.

There was no hesitation in his expression now.

“No more waiting,” he said.

Aria held his gaze.

“No,” she replied.

Three days.

And everything was about to change.
