Chapter 61 The Crown That Still Bleeds
Chapter 61 The Crown That Still Bleeds
KAELAN POV
The second war does not arrive all at once. It sleeps in always and through whispers that grow teeth, loyalties that rot from the inside, eyes that once followed you and now measure how easily you can fall.
The night the Northern Alphas withdrew from the valley, they did not retreat in defeat. They left knowing something we did not and I felt it deeply even in my bones.
By dawn, the message comes, it was not carried by scouts and not announced by horns.
It comes through the bond and through Rhylen’s pain, sharp but distant, like an echo of a blade striking too close to the heart. “They want you back.”
The words hit harder than any threat the North has made so far. I stand on the southern watchtower, staring toward the frost-veiled peaks that once ruled my life. Elara sleeps behind me fitful, restless, power stirring even in dreams. I don’t turn when Rhylen steps beside me, bandages still dark with blood beneath his cloak.
“They’re restless,” he continues. “Your old pack. The Frostclaw territories.” I close my eyes. Frostclaw you say, that was my pack in the north, the very pack that crowned me Alpha before my twentieth winter. When my father passed in the war. The pack that bled for me. The pack that watched me stripped of rank and cast aside when the Northern Council decided I was too dangerous to control and wouldn't give to their demands.
“The Alpha they installed after me was Varyn,” Rhylen says, jaw tight. “He’s failing.”
A bitter laugh tears from my chest. “Of course he is.”
“He rules with fear,” Rhylen goes on. “Taxes too heavy. Blood trials too often. He’s lost half the borderlands to internal revolt.”
I finally turn to face him. “And now they want their true Alpha back.”
“Yes, they do.”
Not because they care about justice but because war is coming and they want a weapon sharp enough to survive it.“I won’t go back,” I say quietly especially when Elara is completely safe here.
Rhylen nods once. “I know.”
The South prepares for war whether it wants to or not. The first clash comes swiftly.
Northern scouts breach the eastern ravines at dusk three days later testing lines, probing defenses. Caius responds with ruthless precision, and we drive them back before moonrise. Victory tastes like ash.
Because even as northern blood stains southern soil, I see the cracks widening. Some wolves cheer while others watch Elara measure her and fear her power.
By the second confrontation, the North does not attack. They come to negotiate again for the third time coming with different Alphas of different packs.
Their banners rise outside the valley at noon white and silver snapping in the wind. This time, Caius does not even let them finish their opening words. “Elara stays,” he declares coldly. “Kaelan may return north if he chooses.”
All eyes turn to me but I don’t hesitate as I gave them my response, “I refuse.”
The silence that follows is worse than shouting. The Northern envoy smiles slowly. “So be it.”
They leave and the third war begins before the sun sets. The betrayal does not come from the front lines. It alwat comes from behind.
The southern defenses collapse on the western flank not because they are overrun but because they are opened but I realize it too late. Fire erupts near the armory. Warriors turn on each other in confusion. Commands fracture, blood spills fast and wrong. “Elara!” I shout through the bond and she answers with pain, luckily not from her but Rhylen.
I find him near the old stone bridge surrounded, down on one knee, fighting with broken ribs and one arm hanging uselessly at his side. Northern steel flashes. Southern warriors fall beside him and standing just beyond the carnage was Varyn.
The Alpha who replaced me, he was alive and smiling. Beside him stands a southern wolf I recognize, council guard. Trusted, traitor.
It snaps into place in a heartbeat. Varyn didn’t come for Elara, he came for me and their plan is clean, bruta and effective. Kill Kaelan on southern soil so he never returns to the north and blame the chaos. Reclaim the Ashborne girl once the South turns on her. I barely escape. Rhylen does not but luckily he was not unbroken.
I drag him from the field with blood on my hands and fury in my throat, Elara’s power tearing the earth open behind us to cover our retreat. By dawn, the damage is done there was too many deaths and too many lies whispered into fear, the story spreads faster than truth ever does.
Elara brought the war, she was indeed cursed.
Elara is the reason the North bleeds us dry.
The southern pack turns, not all at once but enough. By nightfall, they gather more than they ever did.
Voices raised, fists clenched and every eyes burning with blame. “She must leave!” someone shouts. “Send her back to the North!”
“Before she destroys us all!”
I stand before them, Elara behind me, Rhylen barely conscious at my side. I’ve faced councils, Alphas and Executions.
Nothing has ever felt heavier than this because this time, they are not wrong to be afraid and the worst truth of all settles in my chest like ice.
Varyn failed to kill me, which means he will try again and if the North succeeds in forcing Elara and me back together into their lands, It will be far more dangerous than war because I know something they don’t.
Something buried beneath blood and ash and something about the Ashborne legacy that fell in a single day that hasn't fully come to light and the truth behind who truly betrayed them.
If I am taken back north, I won’t just be their Alpha again. I will be their reckoning and this time the crown will not be stripped from my head when I'm alive.
