Chapter 59 When the Pack Chooses
Chapter 59 When the Pack Chooses
ELARA POV
The council chamber has never felt this small.
Torches line the stone walls, flames flickering wildly as if even fire can sense what’s coming.
The air is thick with sweat, fear, and something sharper resentment. Wolves crowd every inch of the chamber, shoulders brushing, growls rumbling low in chests barely restrained. This is no meeting this is rather a verdict.
I stand beside Caius at the raised dais, Selena on his other side, her spine straight, her chin lifted in defiance. Kaelan is just below us, close enough that I can feel him even without looking his presence a steady heat against the cold judgment filling the room. The mark on my chest pulses once slow and steady like a warning.
An elder steps forward old, scarred, respected. His eyes don’t meet mine. “This council is now convenes under threat,” he says. “The Northern Alphas have issued a warning. They demand the Ashborne heir be surrendered peacefully. If we refuse, they will declare war.”
A murmur ripples through the chamber. Fear spreads faster than truth ever does. Another voice rises. “We cannot fight the North! They have numbers, allies, ancient weapons!”
“And we will be slaughtered for protecting a cursed girl!”
My stomach knots, cursed that word again. I feel Kaelan tense, his wolf pushing against his skin, begging to be unleashed. I reach for him instinctively, brushing my fingers against his wrist. He stills not because the rage fades, but because he chooses me over it. Caius raises a hand.
Silence falls not immediately, but eventually. Respect still carries weight here. For now.
“There will be no surrender,” Caius says, voice calm, iron beneath it. “Not of Elara. Not of any wolf under my protection.” An explosion of voices erupts. “You would doom us all for one girl!”
“She is not Southern blood!”
“She brought the North to our gates!”
I flinch despite myself then I step forward. The chamber quiets not because they accept me, but because they didn’t expect this. “I didn’t ask for your protection,” I say, my voice shaking at first, then strengthening. “I didn’t ask to be born Ashborne. I didn’t ask for this mark.” I touch my chest, feeling the heat beneath my palm.
“But I will not be handed over to be executed to buy your safety.” A councilman sneers. “Execution? The North claims they want her contained.”
A bitter laugh escapes me. “So did they claim my parents were killed by rogues.” That lands.
Whispers surge again, sharper now. Caius steps forward beside me. “The truth has been hidden long enough. The Ashborne clan was annihilated by the Northern Council. Not rogues. Not chance.” Gasps echo through the chamber. Some wolves go pale while others look furious.
“You have no proof!”
The mark burns not painfully but commandingly. The torches flicker then steady. I lift my head. “You want proof?” I ask quietly. “Ask yourselves why the North fears me so much they would cross borders for one untrained woman. Ask why they stripped Kaelan of his title for refusing to deliver me.”
Every head turns to Kaelan. He steps forward then, finally.
He was proud and unbowed. “Yes,” he says, voice ringing through stone. “I was Alpha of the North. Heir to a pack but they cast me out because I would not lure my mate to her death.”
A stunned silence. Mate??
The word settles into the chamber like thunder. My breath catches. Kaelan turns to me then, eyes blazing with something fierce and unbreakable. He takes my hand openly, defiantly.
“I claim Elara Ashborne,” he says. “Not as a curse. Not as a weapon. But as my equal. My future. And if the North wants her”
His wolf surges just beneath his skin, power rippling outward. “They come through me.”
Something inside my chest answers him.
The mark flares.
Light spills through my fingers— gold threaded with ash-dark veins. The chamber gasps as ancient symbols shimmer briefly in the air, then fade. I stagger, dizzy, and Kaelan catches me instantly, pulling me against him.
“Elara,” he murmurs, forehead pressing to mine. “Easy. I’ve got you.” His voice steadies me and anchors me. For a heartbeat, the world narrows to us.
Then there was ascream, a wolf lunges from the crowd, eyes wild, blade flashing not at me but at Kaelan. I react without thinking, power surges through me, raw and instinctive.
The attacker is slammed backward mid-strike, crashing into stone with a bone-shattering crack. He doesn’t rise. The chamber erupts into chaos. “He attacked the Alpha’s mate!”
“A traitor!”
“He moved too fast someone helped him!”
My heart pounds violently, helped him. I scan the room, senses flaring, picking up whispers that don’t belong, movements too coordinated, eyes avoiding mine. The traitor is here and he was close.
Kaelan pulls me behind him, snarling. “Enough! Anyone else want to test how far I’ll go?”
No one answers Caius’s voice cuts through the uproar like a blade. “This council is adjourned.”
“You can’t”
“I am Alpha!” Caius roars, power rolling outward. “And I say this any wolf who conspires with the North against one of ours will be judged as an enemy.”
The words ech, hard and final. Guards move in, dragging the unconscious attacker away. Selena steps beside me, gripping my hand. “You did well.”
I’m shaking now not from fear, but from what I felt when the power answered me. It didn’t feel wild. It felt… right. The chamber slowly empties, wolves leaving in fractured groups some angry, some thoughtful, some afraid. The pack is no longer united.
As the doors close, Kaelan cups my face, brushing his thumb beneath my eye. “You shouldn’t have had to stand alone like that,” he says softly. “I wasn’t alone,” I whisper. “You were there.” His lips brush my forehead gentle, reverent. “Always.” But as we stand there, wrapped in fragile calm, I feel it. A cold awareness sliding along my spine.
The traitor is still free, the North is still coming and the next choice this pack makes will decide whether my shattered legacy restores a world or burns it down.
