Chapter 55 Whispers Beneath the Howl
Chapter 55 Whispers Beneath the Howl
ELARA POV
The Southern keep never truly sleeps. Even after battle, even after grief, the stones hum with movement wolves pacing, voices murmuring, secrets slipping through corridors like ghosts that refuse to rest.
I wake with my mark burning, not violently and not like before. This time it’s was alert as if something unseen has brushed too close.
I sit up slowly, careful not to aggravate the lingering weakness in my limbs. The room Caius gave me is warm, guarded, and filled with the faint scent of Kaelan comforting, grounding. He’d stayed until dawn, only leaving when Rhylen insisted he rest before his injuries slowed healing.
I press my fingers to my chest. The mark pulses once beneath my skin. Signaling warning.
I pull Selena’s cloak tighter around my shoulders and rise, moving quietly toward the door. The guards outside straighten immediately. “I need air,” I say softly.
They hesitate, then nod, the corridor beyond is dim, torches burning low. I follow the tug in my chest and not the pain, but direction. Something is pulling me deeper into the keep, toward the council wing and toward voices.
I stop before I see them. Caius’s voice carries through the stone, low and controlled, threaded with barely restrained fury. “You will not touch him.”
There is a pause, then another voice answers older, sharper, edged with bitterness. “You don’t see it, Caius or have you refuse to. The pack followed him, they bled for him you must have felt it.”
I step back into the shadows, heart pounding.
Caius exhales slowly. “They followed strength, strategy and survival.”
“They followed an outsider,” another council member snaps. “And a cursed girl.”
My stomach twists. Caius’s power flares it’s subtle, but I feel it ripple through the air. “She is under my protection.”
“For how long?” the elder presses. “Until the North returns with a larger force? Because they will. And when they do, they won’t stop at the valley.”
A third voice joins, quieter, more dangerous. “There is a way to prevent that.” Silence stretched, then Caius speaks again, colder now. “Speak carefully.”
“If Kaelan is removed,” the voice says, “the North loses its justification. Strip him of command and exile him then offer the girl as proof of compliance.”
My breath catches. Caius growls deep, primal, Alpha to his core. “You will not sacrifice my people to appease murderers.”
“Then you will lose them,” the elder replies flatly. “Fear spreads faster than loyalty. Already, warriors question who truly leads this pack.”
I can almost see Caius’s jaw tightening. “They will follow me,” he says. “For now,” the voice counters. “But when grief festers and when another Northern howl echoes at our borders… they will demand blood.”
A pause, then Caius’s voice drops, heavy with finality. “If any of you move against Kaelan or Elara secretly or otherwise I will consider it treason and I will respond accordingly.”
The silence that follows is thick, uneasy not agreement but resentment. I back away slowly, heart hammering, that wasn’t unity.
That was a fracture barely held together by fear of Caius himself and fear never lasts.
I don’t make it far before I hear them. Two wolves, cloaked and whispering sharply near a side stairwell. I press myself against the stone wall, cloak blending into shadow. “He won’t agree,” one mutters. “Caius is blinded.”
“Then he’ll be forced,” the other replies. “The pack won’t stand for another war. If Kaelan is removed, the girl becomes manageable.”
Removed, my fingers curl into fists. “How?”
A pause. “By force, if needed.”
Ice floods my veins. “And the North?” the first voice asks, a low, humorless chuckle. “Already listening.”
The mark on my chest flares violently. I bite down on a gasp, pressing my palm over it as the truth slams into me.
A Southern traitor is aligned with the North.
Working to tear Kaelan down from within.
My vision sharpens not blurring this time, but focusing. Threads appear where there were none before faint silver lines stretching from the wolves’ shadows, trailing away like spider silk.
Connections, laths and lies. They move off quickly, unaware. I remain frozen long after they’re gone. The prophecy wasn’t wrong. The North doesn’t only attack with claws, It also corrupts.
“Elara?”
I spin, heart leaping into my throat. Liora stands a few steps away, eyes wide with concern, Darius hovering just behind her.
“You shouldn’t be wandering alone,” Liora says gently, then frowns. “What happened?”
I swallow, forcing my breathing to steady. “I think… I think there’s a traitor in the Southern pack.”
Darius stiffens instantly. “Are you sure?”
“Yes,” I whisper. “They’re planning to force Kaelan out. And they’re already in contact with the North.”
Liora’s face hardens. “Then we need to tell Caius.”
“Not yet,” I say quickly. They both look at me like I was mad. “If we expose them without proof, they’ll scatter,” I explain. “Or worse accelerate their plans.”
Darius studies me carefully. “You have a plan.”
I hesitate then nod, “My power it’s changing,” I admit softly. “I can feel connections. Truths hidden beneath words. If I focus, I might be able to trace who they’re working with.”
Liora steps closer, gripping my hand. “You don’t have to do this alone.”
I squeeze back. “I know.”
My gaze drifts toward the distant wing where Kaelan rests. “They’re trying to break him,” I say quietly. “And I won’t let that happen.”
The mark pulses steady now, resolute. Somewhere beneath the keep, the Southern pack sleeps unaware. Above them, alliances fracture and within me, the legacy they tried to destroy sharpens its claws.
Not to burn the world but to protect what’s mine.
