Chapter 43 The Weight of Becoming
Chapter 43 The Weight of Becoming
Elara’s POV
The moment the Northern enforcers disappear into the trees, the forest exhales but I can’t.
My chest feels tight, glowing with that strange pulse beneath my skin. My mark thrums like a heartbeat that isn’t mine, ancient and restless.
Kaelan stays close, his hand warm on my back, grounding me when everything inside me feels like it’s shaking apart. “I’m fine,” I whisper, even though I’m not sure I am.
His eyes soften. “You don’t have to pretend with me.” And something in me loosens at those words something fragile, something terrified.
Before I can respond, shouts echo through the trees. Sentinels, running toward us and Rhylen curses. “Here we go.” I barely have time to brace myself before we’re surrounded.
Wolves spill into the clearing southern warriors, pack elders, council members. Their voices rise in a chaotic, overlapping storm.
“She’s dangerous”, “she’s glowing what did she do?” She bears a curse!”
“Caius must send her back to the north, she came from!” My stomach drops.
Kaelan shifts instantly, stepping in front of me again, he looks ready to tear every man in the clearing apar but the luna Selena’s voice cuts through the chaos.“ENOUGH!
Silence slams down like a hammer. Selena steps forward ever beautiful, fierce, her long braid swinging behind her. She walks like a queen, fury glowing in her dark eyes.
“Not one more word about sending this girl to the North.” An older warrior growls, “Luna, she’s marked. That symbol on her is dangerous”
“So is ignorance,” Selena snaps. “Elara is under our protection. She was brought to this pack by the Moon’s will and while she is here, we protect her. We do not deliver her to execution.”
The word execution makes the blood drain from my face, because that’s what it would be.
A woman steps forward next, clutching her shawl. “But luna, we’ve all heard the stories that mark brings death. It brings ruin. She could curse the pack just by staying here.”
My heart twists painfully, I expected fear but what I didn’t expect hatred.
Kaelan growls, low and dark. “Say curse again and I’ll”. Selena raises a hand, silencing him too. “Listen to yourselves,” she says coldly. “You speak of curses while ignoring the truth.
The Northern Council does not want to protect her they want to use her.” The murmurs of fear ripple through the crowd. I swallow hard. My voice feels trapped in my throat, but I force myself to speak.
“If I stay,” I manage, “your people will hate me more. They already do. If I accuse someone of being a traitor, they’ll think I’m trying to turn the pack against itself.”
Several wolves look away, guilt flickering in their eyes. Selena steps to my side, linking her arm with mine.
“You don’t have to fear them,” she murmurs. “They fear what they don’t understand but they will learn.”
Kaelan moves closer, his presence a wall of heat at my back. “And anyone who doesn’t,” he growls, “will answer to me.” Rhylen lets out a humorless laugh. “And me.”
Selena faces the council members again. “The Alpha will decide her fate. Not the frightened whispers of those who forget our laws. For now, return to your duties.” Kaelan wasn't their alpha so there were grumbling and resistance but one by one, the wolves back away and disperse.
When the clearing is finally quiet, I exhale shakily. Selena squeezes my hand. “Come. There’s something you all need to see.”
I blink. “See?”
“Yes,” she nods. “One of the healers found something in Corin’s old quarters. A parchment which was hidden.” My blood chills.
Corin, the traitor who hunted me. The man who whispered but death never allowed him to complete his statement. Kaelan stiffens beside me, tension rolling through him. “Show us.”
Selena leads the way toward the keep, and we follow, Kaelan at my side, our steps matching instinctively. His hand brushes mine, tentative but warm. I glance at him.
He looks down at me, something soft and fierce glowing in his eyes. He lifts my hand to his lips, brushing a kiss over my knuckles which made my pulse stutters.
“I won’t let the North take you,” he murmurs. “Not now. Not ever.”
Something inside me melts, Something that’s been frozen since childhood before I can answer, the air shifts behind us. A familiar voice calls out.
“Elara!” I turn, and my breath catches. Liora and Darius. They hurry down the path, relief and worry written all over their faces.
Liora throws her arms around me tight, trembling. “Are you okay? We heard shouting. Half the pack is whispering about enforcers”
Darius steps closer, scanning me up and down. “We came as soon as we heard. You look pale. What happened?”
Kaelan answers for me, voice like steel. “The North came for her.”
Both of them freeze. Liora’s eyes widen sharply. “They want to take her?” “They won’t,” Kaelan says firmly. “Not while I breathe, he answered.”
Heat floods my cheeks. Liora looks between us, expression softening with understanding.
Darius nods once, jaw clenched. “Then we stand with her. With both of you.” A wave of emotion crashes through me that I’m not alone not anymore.
Selena clears her throat. “Good. Because what we found changes everything.” We reach Corin’s old room, the door creaks open.
And lying on the table is a parchment glowing faintly with runes identical to the ones on my chest. Kaelan moves to stand behind me, his hand brushing the small of my back.
“Are you ready?” he murmurs. My heart pounds as I nod. Together, we step toward the parchment, toward the truth Corin left behind.
And as I reach out, the mark on my chest burns again answering the magic waiting inside the paper. Everything is about to change once again.
