Chapter 39 The Shadow That Watches
Chapter 39 The Shadow That Watches
Kaelan POV
The moment softened the air until a faint metallic scent drifted past us. Rhylen froze. “You smell that?” he whispered, and I did.
It was blood. Old ,dry and mixed with herbs and magic. Elara tensed beside me. “Where is it coming from?”
I followed the scent into the trees, every sense sharpening, every muscle coiling like a spring. Rhylen stayed close. Elara followed quietly behind, stubborn as always, refusing to be left alone.
The scent led us to a tree, one that looked ordinary until I walked around it. Symbols were carved into the bark, dark symbols this made my stomach dropped.
Elara’s breath hitched. “Kaelan those are from the assassin masks.” Rhylen leaned in, eyes narrowing. “Someone marked this tree as a meeting point.”
“And they marked it days ago,” I said, kneeling to inspect the dirt. “Before the attack.” Elara pressed a hand to her mouth. “Meaning the traitor wasn’t forced. They planned this.” Just then a twig snapped behind us. Rhylen spun and I lunged but whoever had been watching was already gone.
Only the echo of their footsteps remained fading into the deeper forest. My wolf snarled. “They were right here,” Rhylen growled and Elara moved to the tree again, staring at the carved rune as if it carried poison. “Kaelan”
Her voice trembled, “that mark. It’s the same shape I feel burning on my chest whenever I dream.” My heart stopped, Elara,” I said carefully, “show me again.”
She hesitated. Then, slowly, she loosened the tie of her cloak. Beneath it, her shirt slipped just enough to reveal the faint shimmering outline of the crescent shaped mark Caius mentioned and it was glowing now, not bright just enough for the moonlight to catch it.
Rhylen whispered, “Goddess help us” The air vibrated around her, soft but thrumming, Elara pulled her cloak tight again, shaken. “I don’t know what’s happening to me. Or why this mark is appearing now.” I stepped close, brushing my forehead against hers.
“You’re not becoming cursed,” I murmured. “You’re becoming powerful.” Her breath trembled against my lips..“Don’t leave me,” she whispered, I wrapped an arm around her waist. “I couldn’t if I tried.” Rhylen coughed again. “Im still here.” I ignored him.
Because the truth was clear now, the traitor wasn’t just helping the assassins. They were tracking Elara’s awakening.and they were getting bolder. Tomorrow, they might strike again and next time, they wouldn’t fail.
Elara’s POV
The air in Caius’s guest wing feels colder than it should.
Maybe it’s the silence after Kaelan walked out with Rhylen, both of them moving like twin shadows toward the southern perimeter or maybe it’s the lingering echo of that moment in Kaelan’s arms his forehead pressed to mine, his breath warm with the confession he didn’t speak aloud but that I felt through every thread binding us.
A part of me wonders if I should be afraid of that but I wasn't. The knock on the door makes me jolt.
Before I can answer, Liora pushes in, her golden hair braided down her shoulder. Darius follows her, tall, steady, always too observant. They both freeze the moment they see me.
“Elara,” Liora breathes, rushing over. “You look”
“Alive,” Darius finishes, his voice gruffer than usual. “Which is good. Someone in this damn pack needed to get something right.” I manage a weary smile. “I’m okay.”
Liora scans my face like she’s trying to read all the things I haven’t said. “Kaelan told us what happened. My heart twists painfully. “I didn’t mean to scare anyone.”
Darius gives me a look sharp, protective. “You were been hunted,” he reminds me. “That has a way of scaring people.” I swallow hard.
Hunted, in Caius’s territory. Someone bold enough to strike even with Kaelan present. Someone who wanted me silent maybe permanently.
Liora sits beside me and lowers her voice. “And Kaelan…?” she wiggles her eyebrows.
Heat spreads through my cheeks instantly. “Liora.” “What? I’m asking purely for emotional updates.” She smirks. “Did he kiss you?”
I open my mouth then close it then open it again. Darius sighs into his palm. “Liora, for the love of every goddess” “Yes,” I whisper.
Both of them freeze. Liora squeals like she’s been stabbed with joy. “I KNEW IT!”
Darius mutters something about “doomed mates” and “Kaelan losing his mind,” but there’s a softness there. Approval, hidden under exasperation.
“Did Kaelan tell you about the traitor?” I ask, voice low. Liora and Darius exchange a look.
A tense one. “So it’s confirmed,” Darius says at last. “Someone here wants you silenced.”
I nod. “Kaelan really thinks it’s someone inside Caius’s inner circle.” Liora stiffens. “Elara accusing someone here is dangerous. Caius’s pack already doesn’t like how much attention Kaelan is giving you.”
My chest tightens. “I know. If we accuse someone without proof, they’ll think I’m bringing chaos into their home.”
“And if you stay quiet,” Darius says, crossing his arms, “you might end up dead.” I look down at my trembling hands. “I just, don’t want them to hate me more.”
Liora squeezes my shoulder gently. “Elara, listen to me. People will always talk. But Kaelan” she pauses, eyes softening —Kaelan would raze this entire territory to keep you safe. And the pack knows it.” That’s what I’m afraid of.
Before I can say anything else, the faint sound of footsteps echoes down the hall.
Then voices, sharp and urgent. Darius immediately shifts closer to the door. “That’s Kaelan.” The door bursts open a second later.
Kaelan fills the frame tall, tense, storm eyed. Rhylen stands behind him, shoulder still bandaged but posture steady.
The moment Kaelan sees me, something in him loosens a tightness easing only enough to keep him from shattering. “Elara.” His voice is low, threaded with relief and fury. “We found something.”
I stand. “What? What did you?” He crosses the room in three strides, stopping just close enough that I feel his heat. “There was another attempt. A trap meant for me, but triggered by the scent of your blood.”
My heart drops. “What kind of trap?” Darius demands. Kaelan’s jaw tenses. “Herbs rare ones and a residue that only the inner guard has access to.”
Liora gasps. “So it is someone inside Caius’s pack.” “Someone high-ranked,” Rhylen adds and “Someone who knows Kaelan would protect her.” My chest tightens painfully.
“Kaelan” I whisper, my voice small. “If we accuse someone, they’ll hate me more.” He steps even closer.
“Elara,” he murmurs, lifting my chin with one finger. “If protecting you makes the whole world hate me, let them.” His forehead touches mine and my breath stutters.
The room fades the fear fades and everything fades except him. “You are not alone,” he whispers. “Not while I breathe.”
He kisses me slow, deep, fierce a promise and a warning wrapped into one. Liora sighs dreamily, Darius pretends not to look and Rhylen coughs loudly.
Kaelan pulls back just enough to speak, his eyes burning. “We confront Caius today and we don’t leave until the traitor’s mask shatters.” A chill runs down my spine.
Because I know this was only the beginning.
