Chapter 26 Veils of Deception
Chapter 26 Veils of Deception
The aftermath of the sacred lake battle hung over the alliance like a shroud of sorrow and fragile triumph, the shore littered with the fallen bodies of rogues twisted in void agony, pack warriors crumpled in pools of their own blood, the air heavy with the metallic stench of death and the lingering ozone of clashing relics. Aria staggered from the epicenter, the Moon’s Tear dim in her hand, its silver light fading like a dying star, her body wracked with exhaustion that seeped into her bones, her soul raw from the emotional maelstrom. Tears carved tracks through the grime on her face, each one a testament to the losses that clawed at her Vedra’s whimpered plea, Kael’s bloodied roar, Ronan’s agonized shout. The pact they had forged felt like a lifeline, but in this moment of shattered victory, it was a thread frayed by grief.
Lysara lay broken before her, the once-fierce witch now a crumpled figure on the blood-soaked earth, her crimson robes torn and soaked, amber eyes glazed with a mix of defeat and profound, soul-deep sorrow. The Voidheart’s shards scattered around her like discarded memories, their crimson glow extinguished, but the weight of her pain lingered in the air, a palpable force that pressed on Aria’s chest. “Why?” Aria whispered, dropping to her knees beside Lysara, her voice cracking with empathy and rage, tears falling onto the witch’s hand as she grasped it. “Your brother… I felt him in the clash. His loss it’s like mine, a hole that never fills. But this… all this death… for what?”
Lysara’s breath came in ragged gasps, tears streaming from her eyes, her body shaking with sobs that wracked her frame. “He was… everything,” she choked out, her voice a broken whisper, amber eyes locking on Aria’s with a vulnerability that humanized her villainy. “The Lorekeepers your parents they sealed the Voidheart, but it cost him his life. I thought… revenge would fill the void. But it only deepened it.” Her hand tightened on Aria’s, a desperate clutch. “Forgive me… or end me. I can’t… bear this anymore.”
Aria’s heart twisted, a sob escaping her lips as she pulled Lysara into an embrace, the witch’s tears soaking her shoulder. “We heal,” Aria murmured, her voice trembling, the Tear’s residual light flowing between them, purifying the last void taint. “Your pain… it’s ours now. No more alone.”
Kael approached, his black fur shifting back, blood matting his hair, his flank wound seeping crimson that made Aria’s stomach lurch with fear. “Aria,” he rasped, dropping to one knee beside her, his blue eyes filled with a love so fierce it hurt to see, tears glistening unshed. “You did it you saved us.” His hand cupped her face, thumb wiping her tears, but his voice broke. “Seeing you in that clash… I thought I’d lose you. I can’t I won’t survive that.”
Ronan knelt on her other side, his hybrid form reverting, the void burn on his arm blistering angrily, pain etching his features, but his golden eyes burned with a depth of emotion that stole Aria’s breath. “We almost did,” he admitted, voice hoarse, a tear escaping despite his stoic facade. “Damn it, Aria, you’re our light. Without you…” He trailed off, pulling her close, the three of them huddling together, tears mingling in shared relief and sorrow, the pact’s bond a tangible warmth against the night’s chill.
Veyra’s weak whine drew them apart, the young wolf shifting back, her side wound a gaping horror that made Aria’s vision blur with fresh tears. “Veyra no,” Aria sobbed, crawling to her, pressing the Tear to the injury, silver light pouring in. “Hold on, sister please, hold on.” Veyra’s eyes met hers, pain-filled but grateful, a faint whimper escaping as the light knit her flesh, but the terror of nearly losing her clawed at Aria’s soul.
Darius approached, his stern face streaked with grime and tears for his fallen, voice cracking. “The alliance held… but at what cost?” A Silvermoon warrior lay nearby, void-consumed, his final scream still echoing in Aria’s ears, a haunting reminder of bonds broken.
Elder Elara’s snarls from her chains cut through the grief, her scarred face twisted in defiance and madness. “You think this ends it?” she spat, eyes gleaming with residual void. “The Voidheart’s shards live on in hearts like mine. Your parents deserved their fate I sold them out, and I’d do it again!”
The revelation hit like a fresh wound, Aria’s sobs turning to a cry of anguish. “Why? They were pack family!”
Elara laughed bitterly, tears of her own falling. “They hoarded power, sealed relics that could have saved my kin in the wars. Revenge… it’s all I had left.”
Kael’s growl was thunderous, but his voice broke with betrayal. “You’ll answer for this in chains, before the pack.” He bound her tighter, but the pain of a trusted elder’s treachery tore at them all.
As the alliance tended the wounded, howls of grief rising for the dead, Aria stood with Kael and Ronan, tears flowing freely. “We won,” she whispered, voice shattered, “but it feels like loss.”
Kael pulled her close, his embrace fierce, tears wetting her hair. “We survive together. For them.”
Ronan joined, the three united in sorrow, the pact a balm on their wounds. Lysara, healed but chained, wept silently nearby, her grief a mirror. The Tear secure, but the void’s echoes hinted at deeper threats shards lingering, alliances fragile. Aria’s heart, tested to breaking, found strength in chosen love, but the battle’s emotional scars bled deep, whispering that true healing demanded confronting the voids within, or risk shattering anew.
