Chapter Fifty-One: A War Between Hearts
The night stretched wide and endless above them, the moon a cold silver eye watching the storm that had been building between them for far too long.
Kieran’s words still rang in Selene’s ears, a promise or a threat—maybe both.
"Then I’ll burn the sides down."
She should have walked away.
Should have turned her back and left him standing there, let him drown in the consequences of his own decisions.
But she didn’t.
Because despite everything, despite the war declared, despite the past that ached like an old wound reopened too many times…
She still wanted to understand him.
And that terrified her more than anything.
Selene clenched her fists, forcing herself to breathe, forcing her voice to remain steady.
SELENE:
“You think you can just rewrite the past, Kieran?”
Kieran’s golden eyes darkened. “No. But I can change the future.”
Selene exhaled, shaking her head. “You declared war on Darkfang. On me.”
Kieran stepped closer, and gods help her, she didn’t move.
KIERAN:
“I did what I had to do. Just like I did back then.”
Selene let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “That’s your excuse for everything, isn’t it? ‘I did what I had to do.’”
Kieran’s jaw tensed.
KIERAN:
“I never wanted this, Selene.”
SELENE:
“Then why did you start it?”
Kieran was silent.
Because he knew the truth just as well as she did.
This war?
This wasn’t about power.
Or land.
Or anything the Bloodmoon elders had whispered in his ear.
It was about them.
About what had been broken.
About what had been left unfinished.
Selene exhaled sharply, looking away, forcing herself to find the anger again.
SELENE:
“You’re still choosing them over me.”
Kieran’s breath hitched. “No.”
Selene turned back to him, silver eyes burning.
SELENE:
“Then why are we standing on opposite sides of a war?”
Kieran exhaled slowly, his voice rough, raw.
KIERAN:
“Because I’m trying to protect you.”
Selene laughed, but it was empty.
SELENE:
“Then stop.”
Kieran stilled.
Selene shook her head, voice breaking.
SELENE:
“I don’t need your protection. I never did.”
Kieran stepped forward again, and this time, she did move.
She did step back.
Because this wasn’t a game.
This wasn’t just some argument they could come back from.
This was war.
And no matter how much she wanted to believe that he would choose her this time—
She couldn’t afford to be wrong again.
Kieran’s golden eyes held hers, and for a moment—just a moment—
She saw it.
The ache.
The want.
The pain.
KIERAN:
“I don’t know how to stop loving you.”
Selene’s breath caught.
Her chest tightened, her heart slamming against her ribs too hard, too fast.
But she forced herself to be strong.
Forced herself to look him in the eye when she whispered, the hardest words she had ever spoken—
SELENE:
“Then learn.”
And before he could say another word, before she could change her mind, before she could let herself fall all over again—
She turned.
And she walked away.
Because the war between their packs was inevitable.
But the war inside her heart?
That was one she wasn’t sure she could survive.
