CHAPTER 48

Darius's POV

The Midnight Pack had been tarnished by Lucien's treachery, and the Council appeared determined on taking advantage of it. Whispers of conspiracy fueled the swirling accusations, and I was getting sick of playing their games.

“Alpha, the Council’s tone has shifted,” Rylan, my new Beta, said as he paced the room. “They’re no longer just questioning Lucien’s actions. They’re questioning yours.”

My pride was stabbed by his words. The realization weighed heavily on both of us, even though Rylan had shown himself to be dependable and capable since taking on his new position.

“What exactly are they accusing me of this time?” I asked, leaning back in my chair.

Rylan paused his pacing and looked up at me. “They’re saying you’ve been too lenient on rogue activities, that your refusal to take decisive action is evidence of collusion. They’ve even tied some of Lucien’s actions to alliances with rogue factions.”

I laughed, but the rage building inside me was on the verge of erupting.Convenient, isn’t it? They can’t fight the Phantom Pack, so they pushed their failures to me.”

Maya entered as the door creaked open. Although she was aware of the stress in the room, her presence was calming and grounded, like a balm.

"What's the matter?" Her gaze shifted from Rylan to me as she asked.

With a courteous nod, Rylan responded. "Luna, the Council is causing issues. Their goal is to weaken the Alpha's power.”

She drew closer and stood beside me as her face darkened. “What do they gain from this?”

"Control," I answered, my tone tinged with annoyance. “They want to weaken me, make me dependent on their oversight.”

Maya put her hard but soothing hand on my shoulder. “Then we need to fight back. We can’t let them tear down everything you’ve worked for.”

Though the fire in her gaze ignited something deeper within me, I still admired her resolve. It served as a reminder that I wasn't alone in this fight.

“Rylan, prepare a report for the Council,” I said, my tone resolute. “We’ll outline every action we’ve taken against rogue threats, including Lucien’s exile. If they want a fight, we’ll give them one.”

Rylan nodded slightly and said, "Yes, Alpha," before exiting the room.

Maya's look softened as she turned to face me as the door closed behind him. "You know, you don't have to bear this alone."

Her words resonated with me, and I let my guard down for a second.“I know. But sometimes it feels like the weight of the world is on my shoulders.”

Her hand moved from my shoulder to my chest as she stepped closer. “That’s because you’re strong enough to carry it. But even the strongest need support.”

Her words pulled me out of my frustration like a lifeline. I leaned my forehead into hers and clasped her face in my hands.

“You’re my anchor, Maya,” I admitted softly. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

There was a hint of sadness in her eyes, but her lips curled into a tiny grin. “And you’re mine. That’s why we’ll get through this together.”

The sound of rushed footsteps reverberated down the corridor, interrupting the moment. At the door, a guard emerged, his face solemn.

He bowed rapidly and murmured, "Alpha, Luna." "There is something you must see."

Maya and I followed him to the archives, where Evelyn was waiting with a stack of ancient books and scrolls. She looked up as we entered, her face a mixture of excitement and concern.

“I think I’ve found something,” she said, gesturing to a journal on the table.

When Maya saw the worn leather cover, her eyes grew wide. She stepped forward and whispered, "That's my father's journal."

Evelyn nodded. “It was buried in the archives, hidden among unrelated documents. But what’s inside... it changes everything.”

Maya cautiously opened the journal, turning the pages with shaking fingers. The yellowed paper was packed with her father's handwriting, which described the decisions and alliances that had previously influenced the pack's future.

As we read, one name stood out, written over and over again: Rowan.

“Rowan,” Maya murmured, the name stirring a memory she couldn’t quite grasp. “He was someone my father trusted. But... why?”

The journal hinted at a deeper connection between Rowan and the prophecy tied to Maya’s lineage. One passage, in particular, caught her attention:

"Rowan has pledged to keep the secret safe, but it might come at high a cost. Everything we've achieved will be destroyed if the truth is revealed.”

“What secret?” Maya demanded, her voice shaking. “What did my father hide?”

A thunderous smash echoed through the packhouse before Evelyn could respond. Tension smoldering in the air like a storm poised to erupt, the three of us froze.

“Stay here,” I ordered, my Alpha instincts kicking in.

"No," Maya responded adamantly, her disobedience evident. "I'm coming with you."

I hesitated because I knew she wouldn't give up, and I felt compelled to protect her. At last, I nodded, and we all went together toward the disturbance.

We were met with a chaotic scene in the main hall. While some guards stood ready, their rifles drawn, others were stretched out on the ground, moaning in agony.

A broken vase, its pieces glittering like ice shards, stood in the middle of the room. Caleb stood in the middle of the chaos, his eyes bright with resolve despite his tiny frame quivering.

“What’s going on here?” I demanded, my voice cutting through the tension.

One of the guards stepped forward. “Alpha, he was trying to leave the packhouse without permission. When we tried to stop him, he... fought back.”

Maya rushed to Caleb’s side, kneeling beside him. “Caleb, what’s wrong? Why were you trying to leave?”

The boy’s eyes darted to the journal still clutched in her hands. “I... I needed to find Rowan,” he admitted, his voice small but steady.

The room fell silent as his words sank in.

“You know Rowan?” Maya asked, her voice trembling.

Caleb nodded. “He’s... he’s the one who saved me when my pack was destroyed. He told me I’d be safe here, but if his name is in that journal... it means something bad is happening. I have to find him.”

I looked at Maya, who looked shocked and desperate on her face like I did. Whatever secrets Rowan held, they were tied to the prophecy—and to the Phantom Pack’s relentless pursuit of Maya.

The air changed, and an intense chill entered the room before I could react. It was a warning sign, the same sensation I'd had before every major battle.

“Alpha,” Rylan called from the doorway, his face pale. “We’ve got intruders at the southern border. They’re demanding to see you.”

The tension in the room thickened, and I turned to Maya. “Stay here.”

“No,” she said, her voice resolute. “If this is about the prophecy, I need to be there.”

The resolve in her eyes left no room for argument, and together we made our way to the border. As we got closer, the scene that met our eyes made me gasp for air.

A group of cloaked figures stood just beyond the boundary, their presence an open challenge. At their forefront was a man whose aura radiated danger, his piercing gaze fixed on Maya.

"I am here for her." With a spooky, calm voice, he announced.

Maya stiffened beside me, clutching the journal tightly. I stepped forward, my voice a low growl. “You’ll have to go through me first.”

His eyes gleamed with venom as the man grinned. "Oh, I do plan to."

Before I could react, the man raised his hand, and a wave of energy rippled through the air, knocking me back. Maya cried out as the journal slipped from her grasp, landing at the stranger’s feet.

“Let the games begin,” he said, his smile widening as chaos erupted around us.
