Chapter 23 The Path Ahead
Chapter 23 The Path Ahead
Izzy slowly opened her eyes, the warm glow of the sunset casting a gentle light on her face. She was lying on a banana tree mat, and another one was draped over her like a blanket.
As she sat up, she noticed the space around her was neat, swept clean of leaves and twigs. It was a small clearing, and it looked like someone had made an effort to make it comfortable.
She rubbed her eyes, trying to shake off the sleep. Where was she? How did she get here? The forest was quiet, except for the distant chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves in the breeze.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a tiny voice behind her. “How’s your night?”
Izzy spun around, her heart racing from the sudden surprise. Zephrine hovered in the air, its gentle glow casting an ethereal light on her face.
“Oh, Zephrine…” She breathed, her hand on her chest, calming her racing heart.
Her brows furrowed in concern as she asked, “What are you doing here?”
Zephrine's face dipped, its voice weary, “Watching over you, of course... I haven't slept a wink since last night, keeping watch over you. How could you fall asleep in this kind of place? Don't you fear the dangers that lurk around?”
Izzy's smile was a gentle balm, meant to soothe Zephrine's worry. “Sorry,” she said, her voice soft. “I was lost in thought, and forgot about the dangers of my surroundings…”
Izzy's shoulders rose and fell in a helpless shrug. “I mean, what could hurt more than finding out the one person I trusted lied to me?” Her voice cracked with pain, and Zephrine’s gaze softened with pity.
Her lips pressed into a thin line as she sighed. “I was in so much pain, I didn't care what happened to me last night. Nothing seemed to matter…”
Her words spilled out, raw. But she quickly reined in her sadness, forcing a gentle smile onto her lips.
“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause you worry.” She tried steering the conversation.
“It's fine, Mother...” Zephrine whispered, floating closer to Izzy's chest. It wrapped itself around her dress, a soft, reassuring hug. “Don't dwell on it. Everything will be fine, I promise. I'm here, Father's here... and Aethon's watching over us too. You're not alone, you're blessed to have us.”
The mention of Dixon sparked a flicker of anger in Izzy's mind, but she pushed it aside, not wanting to ruin the gentle moment. She changed the subject, asking, “How did you find me?”
“Father described this place to me.” Zephrine responded, still snuggled against her chest.
Izzy sighed, her eyes drifting shut, exhaustion creeping in. She couldn't escape the thoughts of Dixon, and the silence that followed felt heavy, awkward.
Zephrine couldn't bear the stillness, its natural curiosity getting the better of it. “Mother... are you still angry with Father?” It asked, breaking the silence, even though it wished Izzy would have that moment to herself.
“Mother... are you still angry with Father?”
Its question caught Izzy off guard, making her blink in surprise. “Uhn...” She muttered, shaking her head. “No.”
Zephrine's gaze narrowed, seeing right through her. “It's a lie, Mother...” it said, its voice gentle but knowing. “Your heart's beating faster than usual. This isn't the same pattern as yesterday...”
It drifted away from her chest, hovering in front of her face. “Mother... What are you thinking? Are you still mad at Father, or are you confused?”
Izzy's lips pressed together, her mind racing. She hadn't stopped to think about it, but now that Zephrine asked, she wasn't sure what she felt. Anger? Confusion? She didn't have an answer.
Instead, a question of her own spilled out, one she'd been holding onto for too long. “Zephrine...” she said, her gaze locked with its, “what happened while I was asleep?”
Her question landed like a stone in a pond. Something Zephryine wouldn’t want to answer.
Zephyrine had seen it coming, yet it didn’t want to lie to her. Yet, the truth was something it wouldn’t dare say, so it stood between the two.
“A lot…” It uttered. It nodded, explaining, “A lot happened while your eyes were closed, mother. But I wouldn’t want to talk about any. If you’re to find out. You should hear it directly from the horse’s mouth…”
“If the time comes, father will tell you himself. Wait for the right time to come. Don’t be in a hurry or your mind will be clouded.” Its voice was low, yet soothing, sinking into the depths of Izzy’s heart.
Zephrine's words weave a spell around Izzy, calming her and drawing her in.
“I feel like I'm not the same person,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “It's not just the bruises or the wounds healing. I feel like I've been reborn. There's a force inside me... one that's stronger than anything I've ever felt before.”
“Your feelings are normal, Mother. They're valid, but you need to share them with someone you trust... someone who'll be honest with you.” Zephrine advised.
Izzy shook her head, a flicker of doubt crossing her face. “But I—”
Zephrine cut in, its voice firm but gentle. “You have someone, Mother. You have Father. He's your mate, and even if the bond's been strained, his love for you is like nothing you've ever known. It's a love that's rare, one that only comes once in a lifetime…”
“No one, not even your mother's love, can match the love Father has for you. I know you didn't want to trust him again, but he had his reasons for keeping secrets…”
Its words poured out like a river, carrying Izzy along with its gentle current.
“He's still hiding things, but trust me, everything he's done since you met, and everything he'll do until his dying breath, is for you alone...”
Zephrine's voice got softer after every word, seeming to weave a spell of conviction.
“He's got secrets of his own, ones that are tied up with yours, but they're secrets he keeps to protect you. He's not one to act without thinking. He speaks with purpose, and every move he makes is calculated, meant to serve a greater good...”
Its words dropped like stones into a still pond, rippling outwards, spreading calm.
“Father's living for you now, Mother. He's given up his own dreams, his birthright, everything, just to be by your side, to make you happy until his last heartbeat...”
Zephrine's assurance was like a warm blanket, wrapping Izzy in comfort. “Father's the only one worthy of your trust, Mother. You can follow him blindly... you'll never regret it.”
Its voice dropped to a whisper. “Mark this day... If a day ever comes when you regret trusting him, or a single tear falls because of his actions... I'll pay the price of your tears with my own life, and vanish from this world without a whisper.”
