Chapter 70 Rogue sightings
Liam’s POV
The wedding was getting closer and preparations were being made but I still hadn’t gotten a suit.
I would get one once I got into town. I thought to myself.
There had been no message from Lady Grey again and I had double security on Elena wherever she went.
I wasn’t going to take any chance with her.
I was in my office when I heard a knock on the door.
“Come in,” I said.
“It’s been too long,” I looked up and saw Josh’s father standing at the door.
“Uncle Calvin,” I said and he opened his arms. I wasn’t big on hugs but I hugged him tightly.
“How have you been my boy?” he said as he patted my back.
“I have been well,” I said. After my parents died, uncle Calvin had stepped up as a father figure for both me and Sarah.
He was there for us in almost everything. But now he had retired and was staying in a house not so close to the pack.
“You could have come to see me, boy,” he said.
“I know, it’s just that there’s been a lot of work here,” I said.
“I am not angry I was only teasing you,” he laughed.
We talked about the past before he finally asked the question I knew he was itching to ask.
“I heard you found your mate, that’s incredible. But how?” he asked.
“I’m not sure, maybe the goddess gave me a second chance,” I shrugged.
“Hmm maybe,” he said lost in thoughts.
“How is the pack treating her, do they like her as their Luna?”
“The pack has been very welcoming to Elena, some were wary at the beginning but they came around.”
“That’s great you need a strong pack behind you for whatever is coming.”
“What do you mean?”
He laughed nervously. “Oh its just that Josh told me what has been going on in the pack.”
“Hmm,” was all I said.
“Liam don’t be mad at him, I was the one who disturbed him to tell me and you can’t blame this old man for being curious especially when rumors have been going around.”
Again with these rumors. “If you need my help or advice I’m always around the corner,” his eyes softened.
“I will, I promise.”
“Well then,” he said as he got up. “I will be on my way now.”
“You are leaving already?” I asked.
“I am, I have some things I need to do.”
“Okay, I just thought you’d stay a little bit longer and see Sarah and even Elena,” I said.
“Don’t worry Liam, I heard you are getting married soon, I will be there.”
I smiled and so did he as he walked out of my office.
Another knock came at my door.
“Come in,” it seemed like I had a lot of visitors today.
“Good morning Alpha,” the scout said as he walked in.
The scouts were always at the end of the boundary stones observing for any signs of dangers, particularly rogue sightings.
The report landed on my desk with a dull thud.
I knew before I opened it that it wouldn’t be good.
Bad news had a way of announcing itself by tightening the air and crawling under my skin.
Connor paced restlessly, a low growl rumbling in the back of my mind.
They weren't rogues this time but killings.
“How many?” I asked without looking up.
“Five confirmed,” the scout replied. “Three rogues. Two civilians.”
My jaw tightened.
“Where?”
“Near the eastern river close to the wild forest. Just beyond the old boundary stones.”
That was too close.
I flipped open the report, my eyes scanning the details. There were torn bodies. Burn marks that didn’t match claws or teeth. One corpse drained of blood in a way that made my stomach twist.
This wasn’t a normal rogue attack.
“Any survivors?” I asked.
“No, Alpha.”
I leaned back in my chair, steepling my fingers as I forced myself to breathe evenly.
If I started panicking now it wasn't going to help anybody.
Fear never help me in anyway. But anger, anger I could use.
“Describe the scene,” I ordered.
The scout hesitated. “There were… symbols. Burned into the ground. We couldn’t identify them, but they looked deliberate. Like a ritual.”
Connor snarled. Dark magic.
“Did you bring sketches?”
“Yes.” He slid another parchment forward.
The moment I saw the markings, something cold settled in my chest. I had seen symbols like these before not often, not openly, but enough to recognize the intent behind them.
It was some kind of ancient chant or invocation but I wasn't what the chant was for.
“Were any pack scents found?” I asked.
“No, Alpha. Just rogues. And something else.” He swallowed. “Something masked.”
That was worse than anything else he could have said.
I dismissed the scout and sat there long after the door closed, staring at the symbols burned into the page.
Lady Grey’s message echoed in my head.
I will come for my prize.
They weren’t watching anymore. They were moving.
I rose and began pacing the room, every instinct screaming.
Elena’s face flashed in my mind, her smile that morning, the way she tried to act normal even when fear lingered behind her eyes. I had promised her safety. I had promised I would protect her.
And now bodies were dropping near my territory.
This wasn’t coincidence.
I grabbed another report, scanning patrol routes, adjusting them mentally.
“Double the eastern guards,” I muttered. “Triple if I have to.”
Connor pushed forward. She’s the reason, he said bluntly.
“I know,” I replied silently. “And that makes her the target.”
I stopped pacing and pressed my hands flat against the desk.
If this was tied to Elena, her necklace, her dreams, the awakening Lady Grey hinted at, then I was already behind.
Whatever power was stirring had drawn attention from forces that didn’t fear crossing boundaries or slaughtering innocents.
I opened the link. Josh.
Yes Liam. he said immediately. You got the report?
Yes. Meet me in my room in ten minutes.
On my way.
I severed the connection and stood there for a moment longer, forcing myself to steady my breathing.
I would not let this reach her.
Not Elena.
Not my mate.
Not my Luna.
But as I stared down at the burned symbols one last time, a grim realization settled deep in my bones.
This wasn’t just about protecting Elena anymore.
This was the beginning of a war.
And whoever had made the first move had just declared her worth killing for.
