Chapter 68 - Where I belong.

Chapter 68 - Where I belong.
Beverly

Sadly, it very quickly became abundantly clear that my brother resented me. He wasn’t happy that the war was over, and our people were safe again. His little ego was hurt, and he was acting like a damn child. I tried to explain. To him. To my dad, and even to the high priestess. I didn’t ask for the power to shift into a damn dragon! It just happened, and I was glad that it did.

If things carried on the way that they did, we would eventually have lost the war and then what would have happened to our people?! My dad and the high priestess understood, and I was even wondering if there was something happening between them, but my brother was still moping and mumbling around days after the war was finally over.

It took some time for me to recover after the enormous amount of energy I used to shift. When I was finally able to actually leave my room, I quickly realized why my brother was moping. The people were calling me the saviour. Not to my face, but I heard them talking. They were saying that I was like our mother. She saved our people before.

Being the saviour had never been my intention! But no matter how much I tried to tell people that it was a pack effort, the less they wanted to listen. My brother’s mood was slowly growing worse by the day and there was just absolutely nothing I could do about it. Or so I thought. The idea hit me two weeks after we won the war. Now that I could shift into a dragon form, I could move to the old dragon city.

There I could spend more time in my dragon form without breaking the house apart. I might even convince the people to let me move into the old castle. Since I was the only dragon left, I could use the building. Nobody else had used it since the dragons disappeared. It was the perfect solution according to me. My dad seemed sad when I told him what I wanted to do, but at least my brother’s mood seemed to lift a little more.

The high priestess thought it was the perfect idea. I would be closer to the port and I could complete my studies with ease. A couple of days later, I had received confirmation from the city council that they would love to have me move into the old castle. My room was completely packed up the next day! It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be with my dad and brother. I just needed to make my own life now.

I could still shift into my werewolf form, which took a lot less energy, but I felt so powerful as a dragon that I preferred shifting into one more than a werewolf. I hugged my brother the morning we were ready to leave and told the people to look after him. My dad and the high priestess were going with me to get me settled in the city. I shifted into my dragon form, and they got onto my back.

I thought arriving in my dragon form would be special for the city and, besides, I loved flying and this way we would get there a lot faster. I was right. As soon as my huge feet touched the ground in front of the castle, the people came running. Many of them had already seen me this way on that last day of the war, but having a dragon return to the dragon castle was really special for all of them.

I wasn’t there to be their ruler or anything. I just wanted to explore this new-found power I had and the only way I saw that I could do it was right there where the dragons used to live. I was excited to see that some of the businesses that were closed for years, had reopened because there was a dragon that needed them. It invigorated the town and the rumours that they called me the saviour had spread to the city.

At least, here it didn’t bother anyone. My brother and I had made peace before I left, which was a huge relief to my dad, and I was looking forward to new chapters in my life. I also quickly found out that my dad and the high priestess had started seeing each other secretly. They didn’t want to upset my brother, who was incredibly close to my mom, until they were ready to officially announce their relationship.

Telling me apparently was a different story. I pondered asking them to move in with me if things with my brother didn’t work out, and I was glad to hear they would consider it. Things were going our way again. Peace was back, and I loved this new life of mine.

In the mornings, the high priestess and I flew to the witch island for my training and in the evenings, the three of us had dinner together. Everything had fallen into place, except for one thing. I was beginning to feel incredibly alone. My new-found power kind of made me one of a kind, which meant there was a very real possibility that I would never find a mate.

The thought came up more and more and finally started to influence my training. That was when the high priestess asked me what was going on, and I had to spill the beans. I told her how I was feeling, and she seemed to sympathize. She surprised me by telling me that my dad was the first man she fell in love with and I gaped. I knew she wasn’t a young woman anymore, and I couldn’t believe that she had lived her life without a partner.

“Love will find you when you least expect it and when you are ready for it. You just have to be patient and cling to the hope that one day it WILL find you.” She smiled and I promised I would.
