Chapter 63 - Life and the sadness of it.
Beverly
There was so much to learn and a lot of it made perfect sense, but some of it made me wonder if the witches were trying to get world peace. We all knew that would never happen! There was no way all the supernatural creatures would live in peace, and then I wasn’t even thinking about what humans got up to. We were lucky. We all lived on islands so far off the mainland that humans didn’t even dare go there.
I couldn’t even begin to imagine what life was like for the creatures who lived on the mainland. I wanted an adventure. I didn’t want to die! I would never go as far as going to the mainland. The stories I heard about humans were just too horrific. But I digressed! My main concern was that the witches were trying for world peace and that would never happen.
I did learn a lot about their faith, which was a huge eye-opener, and after studying for two weeks, the high priestess finally told me I was done studying. I was so excited about what I had learned that I couldn’t wait to get started, but I was let down again when I found out what the next step was.
“You have to be physically fit to do magic. It takes a lot of energy out of the person who does the spell and if you aren’t fit, you can’t do it. If you do the wrong spell, it might even kill you.” She raised a brow as she said it and I frowned. I was in the best shape of my life! Couldn’t they see that?! If I wasn’t, it was because they weren’t feeding me any meat! I didn’t say it, however.
For three weeks, I pushed harder than I had ever before, and I quickly found out I wasn’t as fit as I thought I was. It was surprising to find that none of the witches looked as if they spent a lot of time on exercise, but as soon as I faced some of them in practice, I quickly found out that looks were deceiving! They were incredibly fit and stronger than I could ever have imagined.
After the physical training, the high priestess declared me ready, and the time had finally come. It was interesting to put the knowledge I gained through my studies with everything I had learned in practical. The high priestess taught me how my body movement would influence spells and what to do and what not to do while casting spells.
They taught me how to cast a circle of protection, and how to do the basic spells they used in their everyday lives. It was the circle of protection that my mother never cast which caused such a huge war and I made sure to read everything I could find about protection in my spare time. The last thing I wanted was to break their number one law and harm someone because I didn’t protect them from my spell.
It felt strange at first to feel the magical energy flowing through my body as I moved, but I quickly got used to it. It was like shifting, only with a lot less pain. I loved being there and learning all of it … Until the day my father arrived.
“Beverly, you have to come home. Your brother isn’t doing well, and we need to stand together.” He frowned and I rolled my eyes.
“I can’t fix that! My brother is the one in charge. You two didn’t make me feel like a family after mom died. She was the glue that kept us together. Now that I’ve found my happy place, you want me to go back there and be sad again?!” I was furious! There was no way I was going home just to join in their sadness. I couldn’t for the life of me imagine why my brother needed me. He was doing just fine when I left!
“Beverly, please. We need you. I need you.” Tears filled my father’s eyes and I broke down. I closed the gap between us and held onto him. My mother was his life. She had been taken from us far too soon. It was so sudden that nobody got the chance to say goodbye.
“Dad, I haven’t finished my training. I still have so much to learn.” I sighed, but it was too late. I knew I had to go back. I would probably never be able to finish my training once I returned home, but I had to go. I left because I felt that they pushed me away. Now they needed me. I had to return.
The high priestess looked sad when I told her I had to leave, and she reminded me that even though I left, I was still one of them now. I had to live by their laws. I had to continue with my training even if I wasn’t there anymore. She wanted me to really remember everything they taught me and I promised I would. My chaperon looked relieved as we set off to the harbour and I looked back once, hoping I would one day be able to return.
The closer we got to home, the more I felt the incredible sadness. It was the part of my life I had been avoiding while I stayed with the witches. The time had come to face it all. The time had come to force my brother to see what he was doing and to stop this madness. The time had come to face the fact that my mother was gone, and we would probably never find out what happened so that we could move on and heal from the sadness. When we arrived, I didn’t even waste time in going to my room to freshen up.
I was a little furious with my brother. It was because of him that I had to return! So, I wasted no time and stalked right into his office. He was sitting behind his desk paging through what I could only guess was yet another report.
“You aren’t going to find the answers in those papers of yours.” I glared at him when he looked up.
