Chapter 55 - The witch!

Chapter 55 - The witch!
Nadia

We needed to save our people! AGAIN! This time it wasn’t because we had done something wrong, or someone disliked us. This time we were facing war because of an accident! I couldn’t believe that the witches wouldn’t at least listen. I couldn’t believe that they wouldn’t just listen to our side and let us be. Sighing as we made it back to the castle just in time, I looked at the frightened looks on the faces of our people.

We had to figure out a way to get the witches to stop this war! We had to save our people. They wouldn’t survive another war! The bombs stopped a couple of hours later, and we barely had enough time to go outside and grab a couple of necessities when it started again. I was trying to figure out who could have done this spell the witches were talking about.

If we could find the guilty person, then maybe we could get the witches to talk. I didn’t want whoever did this to be punished by the witches. They were bombing innocent people. I didn’t trust them to be fair. The bombings lasted for over a week, and we were running out of food and water fast. They didn’t let up long enough for us to go out hunting or to get water.

We were running out of food and water and I had to do something to protect my people! The second the next attack stopped, I gripped Lucca’s hand, and we made a run for it. We knew we couldn’t go far. We knew we wouldn’t be able to carry much while running for our lives. We were lucky to get water, but we couldn’t find any food.

“Lucca, we have to find a way. We have to.” My eyes filled with tears as we handed out the water to our people while the building above us shook. Lucca looked tired and frustrated. As I looked at our people, I could see all of them were tired and frustrated. We didn’t know what was going on at any of the other villages.

I was up in an instant. Lucca gripped my wrist as I stepped outside. In front of me something hit the ground and dirt flew everywhere. I looked up and saw a witch laughing on her broom and that was just the last straw for me!

“You get down here, you coward! Get down here and face us!” I screamed while Lucca tried to drag me back inside. The witch tilted her head to one side, looking amused. I had no idea who she was or if she was a soldier or a leader. I didn’t care. I was surprised to hear the loud sound of bombs stop as the witch made her way down. She climbed off her broom, and it kept levitating beside her.

“What do you want? Do you have our prisoner?” She smiled and I felt like strangling the witch!

“No! I’m not letting you take anybody. Don’t you think your bombs have killed enough of our people?!” I screamed, but she laughed, and it was enough to send me into a rage. I pushed forward to start running, but Lucca grabbed hold of me just in time. The witch laughed and climbed onto her broom, she was about to take off over our heads when I reached up.

I was in shock when I felt the material of her dress in my hand and, without thinking, I pulled. Hard. She hit the ground hard while her broom flew over our heads and hit the tree behind us. It shattered into small pieces. I was on top of her before she could think, and it took Lucca and three others to pull me off. I didn’t want to kill her. I just wanted them to realize that we weren’t as weak as they thought we were.

We could defend ourselves! Even against their damn bombs! We took the witch as our prisoner and, for the first time in a while, the bombs stopped. It made me wonder if the witch was important or if that was how they acted. Did they all move as one? We took her into the only room in the castle that still had a roof. I can’t let this go. I had to make her see.

I had to make all of them see! They couldn’t do that! This was not our fault! The entire time the witch was there, not a single bomb was dropped. Unfortunately, she simply wouldn’t listen. She point-blank refused to listen to us. It made me wonder if perhaps they were onto something. Maybe someone did do a spell. Maybe we had someone who could do that kind of magic and who did literally everything in their power, so we could win the war.

“If you won’t listen to us, we will not be letting you go!” I shouted before storming out. I couldn’t deal with the incredible tension in the room for one more second. I couldn’t watch as one more person from our country was killed. I would keep that witch locked away in our dungeons for the rest of her life if it meant the witches would … That was when I realized why they stopped.

She wasn’t just a witch. She had to be someone important. If she was just a normal witch, she would die and her power would just float back to her people. There would be no big fuss. She had to be important to her people if they didn’t dare do anything! Now all I had to do was figure out how important she was to the witches.

Was she a high-ranked soldier or was she someone more important? I started to study her body language each time I question her and noticed that she had a nervous tick! Each time I got closer to the truth, her left middle finger would twitch slightly. Almost as if she was trying to flip me off but didn’t dare.
