Chapter 51 - Gillian, the ghostly dragon!

Our baby was born a couple of months later. A beautiful baby girl that would one day lead our people was born in the castle on a clear starry night. I had a good pregnancy and wasn’t too sick all throughout. We decorated her room and a week before her birth it felt as if the entire country had been holding their breaths in anticipation.

I couldn’t wait for her to grow up, so I could show her all the wonders of our world, and from the looks of things she was definitely going to be the apple of her father’s eye. Each time I walked into her room I would find Lucca just staring at her.

“She looks like an angel when she’s sleeping.” He grinned.

“Well, with the two of us as parents, I can’t imagine that she would be one.” I winked at him, making him laugh out loud and waking the baby. Lucca helped me to get her cleaned up, and I sat down to feed her while he watched. After putting her to bed, we went for a walk and I could feel that Lucca was a little uneasy.

“What’s going on, my love?” I frowned. I couldn’t remember any reports of problems, so I couldn’t understand why he would be uneasy.

“Actually, it’s been bugging me for a while.” He sighed, and I wondered what could have bugged him that he couldn’t talk to me about. “The day the war ended,” He stopped walking and frowned when he looked at me. “I felt a power surge like I’ve never felt before, and I haven’t felt it since. You also looked far more powerful than normal. I mean you killed those ghosts so fast …” His voice drifted off and I nodded.

I hadn’t said anything, but I had also wondered about it over the years. We talked about how it felt, but neither of us had an explanation for it. Lucca shrugged after a while when we couldn’t seem to think of a reason why it happened. What he said made me think about it again. I actually hadn’t thought about it in a while.

Was it possible that some magical power intervened? But who would have intervened? I had pushed all thoughts of the dragons out of my mind, since there was no way they could have done anything. They were all dead. I also couldn’t think of any other creatures who could have made us stronger with spells. In the end, I also had to just let it go, or it was going to drive me mad.

The years went by and when our son was born two years after his sister, we felt so blessed. We had a life both of us thought we would never have, and our children would have a peaceful future to look forward to. We still had the festival every year and the people loved seeing us with our children having fun with all of them.

It was the year after my son was born, that I was at the festival and the memorial caught my eye. I walked over to the bench and sat down. The tree had grown so much in the past couple of years, but it was not big enough to give shade just yet. I sat on the bench and soaked in the sun when a voice beside me made me jump.

“Hi, princess.” My head snapped around to find Gillian sitting beside me.

“Gillian?!!” Okay! I had finally gone mad! That was the only explanation! He smiled.

“The one and only. How have you been?” He grinned and I felt a little faint!

“Good …” I hesitated. “You?” I sounded out of breath, but what did you expect?! I was sitting beside someone who wasn’t supposed to be there!!

“Well, it sucks to be dead, but it’s been good.” He laughed when my eyes grew wider. “What? Did you think giving us a link to the living world wouldn’t have consequences?” He pointed at the bench and I rolled my eyes.

“No, this can’t be happening. We killed all the ghosts. You can’t be here. I’m imagining this!” I threw my hands in the air and sighed deeply. I was definitely losing it or had fallen asleep on the bench and was dreaming all of this!

“No, my dear. It is happening, and you didn’t kill all of us. You just killed the ones who had revealed themselves and were attacking you. The rest of us have been hanging around here and there and everywhere. We only want peace and when you killed the leader, we were released from his bonds.” The conversation had become far too much for me to deal with and as soon as I jumped up, Gillian disappeared.

I frowned and looked at the empty bench. Yup! I had definitely fallen asleep and dreamed all of that! Not willing to take the chance, I stormed off to find Lucca and the children. Lucca noticed that I was upset, but when he asked me what was going on, I had no freaking idea how to explain it, so I didn’t. I focused on him and our kids and decided NOT to go anywhere near that bench ever again. The festival was a huge success as usual, and when it was over, and we made our way back home, I couldn’t help but look at the bench on the way out.

Shaking my head to push the thoughts out of my mind, I focused on the children. We still had a way to go to get back home, and they were a handful! Over the next couple of days, my mind kept drifting to what happened, and it was driving me insane. I wasn’t sure if I fell asleep and dreamed it all or if it actually really happened. I was on the verge of having myself declared insane when Lucca finally insisted that I tell him what was going on.
