Chapter 46 Carnage
Chapter 46 Carnage
Hazel's POV
Jordan and I looked at each other, both of us wanting to assume that it couldn't be a coincidence.
"I'm coming with you!" I announce to him as I ask Lucas to tell me where he is.
"You aren't!" He thunders. "I'll take care of it."
He knows that I won't listen to him, and as I hear men running all over the pack house, I know that he's assembling a troop to go with him and assess if there is still a lingering threat.
The sun is just starting to rise, and Jordan knows that this is my brother we're talking about.
Before he can say anything, I eye another exit at the far end of the garden.
"Hazel...."
I don't even let him get the words out when I'm already rushing out of the garden.
I hear him running towards me, with obvious good reason that I was about to rush to where Lucas just told me without any kind of back up or men.
"We need to get there fast. Jordan can't get there immediately. He needs his troops." I tell Venus as I storm through the gates of the pack house, wondering how I was going to get halfway across the pack just in time.
A car would take around an hour to get to the exact location.
Looking beyond the road, I see the forest that the road goes through. With a quick calculation in my head, I already know which direction Lucas was in when they were attacked.
"Luna Hazel, Alpha Jordan told us to...." I slam my phone on the guard's chest, forcing him to hold on to it.
I bet he was just sent by Logan to stop me from doing something stupid.
And that's exactly what I was up to.
"Let's go girl!" I say to Venus as I break into a sprint, jump and shift before my paws hit the ground.
Normally, it would take me a couple of seconds and some pain to shift into my wolf.
But with the adrenaline kicking in and my heart racing as I overthink all possible scenarios with Lucas and Susan, I do it in a snap.
The sound of my paws hitting the ground as I pick up the speed, running through the forest headed towards Lucas is the only noise that doesn't fit in with the noise of the forest.
Using the forest instead of the road might save me half time, and that's all I need in that moment.
As I pick up the pace, I hear howling from behind me, which is soon followed by the sound of hundreds of wolves charging through the forest.
Logan quickly catches up, and I'm once again reminded that he is as cured as he will ever be because when I look over my shoulder, our eyes meet.
I can see the man that's my mate, and no longer the monster that threatened to kill me before
"Let's go save your brother." He says to me through the mind link.
The forest erupts from dezens of howls that quickly rent the air, announcing to whoever was watching on the other side that we were coming and ready for a fight.
We got there in around twenty minutes and the first thing that we smelled when we emerged from the forest was the smell of death.
I don't know how to describe it, but it felt like a thick blanket of suffocating fog that covered the area.
It was so dense that even the sun's rays seemed defeated in penetrating through it.
The siren of an ambulance was in the distance, coming towards us, and the scene in front of us was anything but damning.
We were on a highway that went through the forest, and I figured that Lucas was perhaps taking Susan for a checkup.
His car was in a ditch in the far off distance and there were bodies everywhere.
All of them were lifeless, looking like they had been shredded by a monster.
I felt like something was turning in my stomach as there was blood everywhere.
What almost overwhelmed me was the sight of limbs scattered across the road and into the bushes.
There was a skid mark on the road that stretched to where the car had crashed.
It looked Lucas was driving and then his car veered off the roads, sending it to roll a couple of times and land in the ditch.
With that much carnage, I had but one question; where was Lucas?
This question was answered when I heard movement from behind one of the trees that was on the other side of the road.
Lucas popped from around the tree, and he was covered in blood from head to toe.
He was only in his briefs, and I couldn't tell whether that was his blood or that of the slain men all around the scene.
Jordan, together with the other soldiers, patrolled the area and we're looking for any survivors.
I couldn't care about that.
"What happened here?" I asked him, using the mind link.
Before he could answer, Xavier called out to Jordan.
"The other attack is about a mile from here!"
"Go!" Jordan orders without hesitation, and Xavier disappeared with at last half of the men that were with us.
"They came out of nowhere. They were fast, and strong." Lucas finally answered me, as I kept looking around and trying to figure out what was happening.
One of the men walked to me and hands me what looks like an oversized shirt, which I put on as I shift back.
My first instinct is to rush over to Lucas, hug him and check to see he is okay.
He looks distraught and in shock, as his mind is trying to piece what has just happened.
As I check him for injuries, I notice that he has none.
All that blood is not his and he has this thousand yard stare as he looks at the bodies strewn across the road.
"He's in shock." Jordan says to me as he appears next to me in his human form.
"Do you.... think...." I try to get the words out,but I can't.
"Do I think he did all of this? I believe so." Jordan says to me, answering the question that's on my mind.
It's just unfathomable to believe that he has killed what looks like twenty men, and he doesn't have a scratch on him.
"You should be more worried about what can make a man go into a rampage like this." Jordan added.
And that's when then missing link finally came to me.
"Susan!" I gasp, immediately looking around.
Lucas is like a statue. I believe his body shut down because of the murderous spree that he had just been in, when he saw me and Jordan.
Our presence relaxed him, letting his body finally recharg.
My eyes quickly dart around, knowing that if he came from behind the tree next to me, Susan has to be close.
He couldn't have gone on the rampage and then retreat somewhere else.
And that's when I see her.
With her back on the ground, she lies there motionless, except for what looks like a weak breathing pattern.
There's blood in her hair, oozing from her skull, and this is where I remember that Lucas told me she was injured.
"Lucas must have dragged her here to get her away from the crashed car." I say to Jordan who is attending to Lucas.
Just then, the flashing lights of the ambulance start shining all around as it finally gets to where we are.
"Jordan." I call to him with urgency
He quickly instructs two warriors to look after Lucas as he quickly crouches next to me.
"The child." I say to him, placing my hand on her belly and feeling if I can hear anything.
A very faint kick makes me almost jump with hope, but the kick is so faint that I'm immediately concerned.
Susan is clearly hurt, and with her being unconscious, it was even harder to know the severity of her injuries.
We couldn't know whether she had taken a bump in her stomach that could be fatal to the unborn child or not.
"Move." Jordan tells me and I immediately move to the side.
He leans down and places one hand under her knees, and another behind her back.
With a grunt, he rises to one knee and then the other. He makes it look effortless as he gets up with Susan in his hands and starts walking towards the ambulance.
On the other hand, I guide a still shaken Lucas to follow us as we all go to the ambulance.
As this is happening, all the other wolves are patrolling the entire area while others are on the lookout.
Jordan places Susan on the stretcher that had already been placed outside the ambulance and orders the paramedics to stabilize her.
When they see that she is heavily pregnant, one of them asks, "How many months."
"Around seven or eight." I answer immediately, unsure about it since that was not a time that one could have clear thoughts
"We need to take her to the hospital right now!" The second paramedic immediately declares, his voice high with alarm.
As soon as they put her in the back, Lucas follows, and seats next to Susan.
He then breaks from his trance just before the doors close and says to me, "Those men aren't wolves nor witches. They were already dead."
