VIVIAN'S POV

The morning light streamed through the blinds, but the warmth did nothing to chase away the cold feeling that had settled in my bones. Every inch of me felt tense, coiled with a mixture of anger and fear I couldn’t shake, even after Joel had stormed out. It had taken every ounce of self-control I possessed to keep my composure as he left. But now that I was alone, the full weight of last night’s encounter bore down on me, and I realized just how close I’d come to losing control.

I’d known Joel could be volatile, but last night had shown me a side of him I hadn’t anticipated—one that didn’t just argue or threaten but acted out of pure, unrestrained fury. His face flashed in my mind: the wild look in his eyes, the grip of his hands on my arms, the cold malice in his voice. It sent a chill down my spine. I’d always been able to handle Joel, to manipulate him, bend him to my will. But now… now he was a danger I hadn’t planned for, a loose cannon that could explode at any moment.

I took a shaky breath, forcing myself to focus. This wasn’t the time to fall apart. Joel’s temper had always been his weakness, and if he thought he could intimidate me into submission, he was wrong. But I wasn’t about to sit back and wait for him to strike again. I needed protection, something more concrete than my own wits. I needed the law on my side, something to keep him at a distance until I could regain control of the situation.

I grabbed my phone, scrolling through my contacts until I found the number of a lawyer I’d used for business matters in the past. It was early, but this couldn’t wait. My thumb hovered over the call button for a second before I pressed it, each ring making my heart pound a little faster.

Finally, a voice picked up on the other end. “This is Alan Newman.”

“Alan, it’s Vivian,” I said, doing my best to keep my voice steady. “I need your help. It’s… a personal matter.”

There was a pause before he replied, his tone shifting to one of caution. “Of course, Vivian. What seems to be the problem?”

“It’s about someone I know,” I began, my words coming out faster than I intended. “He’s become… dangerous. He’s been harassing me, physically threatening me, and last night it escalated. I need to take action before it goes any further.”

Alan’s tone became serious. “Are you saying you want to file a restraining order?”

“Yes,” I said, my voice firm, though I could feel a slight tremor beneath it. “Joel isn’t going to back down on his own. I need something to protect me, something legally binding.”

He let out a thoughtful sigh, the faint sound of papers shuffling in the background. “Alright. I’ll need a detailed account of the incident and any previous encounters that might support your case. Has he made any specific threats, or are there any witnesses?”

“No witnesses,” I admitted, my frustration mounting. “But he’s made it clear that he sees me as an enemy now. He threatened me, physically held me against my will. And he won’t hesitate to do worse if he thinks it’ll get him what he wants.”

Alan’s tone was calm, professional. “Understood. I’ll help you prepare the paperwork. We’ll need to act quickly if you want the court to issue a restraining order. Are you available to meet this morning?”

“Yes, absolutely,” I replied, my determination hardening. “Thank you, Alan.”

“Of course, Vivian. I’ll handle everything on my end. Just bring any records you might have of communications or encounters with him, anything that could help substantiate your case.”

After ending the call, I took a deep breath, feeling a sense of relief settle over me. This was the right move. Joel had crossed a line, and he needed to understand that I wouldn’t be intimidated. He could rage and lash out all he wanted, but I’d make sure he couldn’t come near me again.

Later that morning, I sat across from Alan in his office, a stack of documents and my notes spread out on the desk between us. He was efficient, moving through the necessary paperwork with a calm focus that helped ease some of my own tension. I recounted the events of the previous night, detailing every threat, every moment Joel had forced his way into my space.

As I spoke, Alan’s gaze remained fixed, his expression neutral but attentive. When I finished, he nodded, reaching for a pen.

“I’ll file this immediately,” he said, his tone reassuring. “With the details you’ve provided, there’s a strong case for issuing a temporary restraining order. It’ll prevent him from contacting you or coming near you.”

I nodded, my fingers twisting the edge of my scarf. “And if he ignores it?”

“Then he’ll be breaking the law,” Alan replied firmly. “We can press charges, and he could face jail time. The order is serious—if he disregards it, there will be consequences.”

The thought gave me some satisfaction. If Joel thought he could intimidate me without facing repercussions, he was about to get a rude awakening.

As I left Alan’s office, a strange feeling washed over me—a mix of relief and defiance. I’d always seen myself as the one in control, the one who manipulated others to my advantage. But this time, I’d been forced to take a different approach, to protect myself from a man I’d once thought was under my thumb.

I had no regrets, though. Joel had become a threat, and I wasn’t about to let him interfere with my life. But as I drove back home, my thoughts kept circling back to the plan. Kane was still on board, ready to move forward with the kidnapping, and Joel’s outburst had complicated things. He knew too much, and if he was angry enough, he could ruin everything if he went to Bethany or Damien.

I gripped the steering wheel tighter, my mind racing. Joel wouldn’t dare go to them. He had nothing to gain by doing so, especially if he was cut out of the plan. But still… he was unpredictable now, a wild card I hadn’t accounted for.

Once home, I sat down at my desk, jotting down notes, trying to piece together a strategy that could work even if Joel decided to act against me. The restraining order would keep him at a distance, but I needed to make sure he had no reason to get involved with Bethany’s family.

An idea struck me—a way to turn his own anger against him. If I could convince him that targeting Bethany directly would only hurt him further, that it would ruin his chance for any future leverage, he might back off. Joel was prideful, and he hated being seen as weak. Appealing to that side of him might buy me the time I needed.

That evening, I sat down and composed a carefully worded email to Joel. I wasn’t stupid enough to meet him in person again, not after last night. I’d file the restraining order in the morning, but for now, I wanted to deliver one final message, something to put an end to his attempts at contact.

Joel,
You made your intentions clear last night, and I’m not interested in engaging further. You’ve overstepped every boundary, and your actions have left me no choice but to protect myself legally. Know that I’ve taken the necessary steps to prevent you from contacting me. Any attempt to reach me or interfere with my plans will be met with legal consequences.
Think carefully about what you do next. You and I both know that targeting Bethany’s family will only reflect poorly on you. If you value any future opportunity, stay away. I’m done entertaining threats from a man who has lost all semblance of control.
Vivian

I read over the email, feeling a sense of finality as I hit “send.” It was clear, to the point, and carried an unspoken warning. If he decided to challenge me, he’d face the consequences. I was done playing his game. From now on, I would make the rules, and he’d either fall in line or be cut out entirely.

As I closed my laptop, a sense of calm settled over me. The restraining order would soon be in place, the message had been sent, and I’d covered every angle I could think of. I’d taken steps to protect myself, to reinforce the boundaries Joel had ignored, and that was all I could do for now.

But deep down, I knew this wasn’t over. Joel wouldn’t take kindly to being sidelined, especially by someone he thought he could control. He might retaliate, find ways to lash out. I’d taken steps to safeguard myself, but as I sat there in the quiet of my apartment, I couldn’t ignore the gnawing thought that lingered:

Had I underestimated him again?

Only time would tell. But one thing was certain—if Joel decided to come after me, I’d be ready. This was my life, my plan, and I would see it through, no matter the cost.
