Chapter 88 CHAPTER 88
Evelyn’s POV
Gwen arrived in the morning and pulled the curtains. I squinted at the sharp rays of sunlight hitting my eyes. I yawned.
“Can you shut that?” I asked.
She crossed her arms on her chest. “Did you sleep at all last night? It’s almost 10am."
I yawned, then jumped up and glanced at the door. “How did you get in? The door was locked.”
“I have a key to your room,” she said.
“What? And Xavier.. Stefan too?”
She raised her brows confused. “Is something wrong, Evelyn? I can leave if you are not comfortable with me being here today. I just wanted to give you your medications."
I thought of the dream. I still had so many unanswered questions. I couldn’t afford to raise suspicions yet. “I’m sorry,” I said, landing on my feet as I flipped myself out of bed. “I think I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.”
She watched me. “You couldn’t sleep at night?”
I stood up. “Nightmares.”
She smiled. “I heard you have them when your memories start coming back. So you should be happy.”
She laid the silver tray in front of me and popped the same number of pills. Five. I pushed the orange one to a corner of my mouth and swallowed the others. She poured some savlon on the gauze and raised my top.
“Time to change your dressing,” she said. Then she stopped as she inspected the wound site. “What happened?” she asked, looking at me. “It’s gone.”
I knew.
I leaned forward, pretending I didn't know. “What do you mean?”
She pointed at it. “The whole wound is healed. Not a single scar.”
My finger ran over my skin. “Someone used to tell me eating good foods makes us heal faster.”
I wasn’t sure who had said it, but I remembered the statement.
“This is very odd. I haven’t seen anything like it at all.”
I pulled the blouse down. “It’s a good thing, isn’t it? Should I be worried about it?”
“No,” she said. “One takes off my list.”
“Can you do me a favour?” I asked.
She nodded. “What is it?”
“Don’t tell Stefan about this,” I said. “He might not understand."
“I understand,” she said. “Are you up for some walk today?”
“Yes.”
I dressed up and went downstairs to join her. She was sitting with Xavier and they seemed to be talking. I was hoping she wasn’t talking about my injury.
“Hey, babe,” he said, standing up to kiss me on my cheeks. “Nurse Gwen was just telling me that you’ve been doing well.”
I looked at her. “Yes. Yes, I feel a lot better than yesterday.”
“That’s good,” he said. “I wanted us to spend some time together last night but you went off to bed very early.”
I counted numbers in my mind to stop me from losing my mind.
“We should have a dinner date tonight. Gwen said going out like that would improve your mood. Remember we had so much fun in Ibiza.”
I smiled, then looked at Gwen. “Thanks.”
I tried to push past him as gently as possible. “The estate grounds are currently being mowed,” he continued. “I think your jogging has to be delayed a little.”
I sat down beside Gwen. “We’ll just wait a little or we can take a different route.”
She looked out of the window. “It’s a bit sunny today. Quite late for a stroll too. We can skip today.”
I nodded, bent over my phone.
Nine tailed foxes, I typed into the search bar and began to read through it. I was so lost in what I was reading that I didn't realise Xavier was calling my name. He leaned close to my phone and I flipped it down instantly.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
I pushed the phone behind me and tried to close the page I was on. “Nothing,” I said.
“Then what are you hiding?”
“Nothing.”
He grabbed my hand and pulled it out from behind me. “Let go of me,” I cried. I looked at Gwen. She looked uncomfortable, but she couldn’t do anything.
“Can you let her go, please?”
“Shut up!” he shouted at her. He pulled the phone from my grip. I stood up.
His face creased. “What the hell is this, Stella?”
“My name is Evelyn,” I said defiantly. “Stop calling me that.”
“You’ve been searching a lot of things,” he said, scrolling through my phone. “How did you get this connection on your phone?”
I backed away.
Gwen rose up. “I did. She asked me and I let her use my internet connection. I …” she glanced at me. “I didn’t know it was a problem.”
He squeezed the phone in his hand until his knuckles turned red and the glass shattered. “Is this what you girls have been up to all these while? Keeping secrets while you take your little walks?”
I looked around for something to defend myself, and possibly Gwen.
“You have no right to talk to us that way,” Gwen yelled. “We never said anything behind your back during the walks. And she deserves to use her phone.”
“Gwen, “ I called out.
“Shut up, bitch!” He slapped her hard across the face twice, then kicked her and pushed her against the sofa.
“Bitches,” he cursed. “That’s what you all are.”
“Stop it!” I shouted. “She did nothing to you.”
“Shut up,” he yelled at me. He moved around the room, like an angry beast looking for something.
“Let her go, please,” I cried.
Gwen stood up and lunged towards him, sending them to the floor. She hit him with her fist on her head and yelled, “Run! Get help!”
I turned around and headed for the door. I grabbed the handle and threw it open and I started running. Suddenly, I felt a sharp headache and a blinding flash of light. I collapsed on the floor and held my head, screaming.
