Chapter 80 CHAPTER 80
Xavier’s POV
As the days passed, I realised that I couldn't keep her locked in the house all her life. The medications were working and her memories were not coming back again. We were miles away from anyone who knew us, in a town my father had migrated from. Perhaps I needed to breathe a little.
That morning as I gave her medications to her, I asked her if she was happy with the second event planner. She seemed upset that I had made the changes without telling her.
“Are you still upset about the event planner?” I asked, as she threw the pills down her throat.
She gulped some water and nodded. “I really like her. Rio isn’t really charming. He talks nonstop without saying anything.”
“I’m sorry,” I said. “I would have gotten her back, but she is currently booked for another wedding.”
“The one she mentioned that evening?”
I had no idea but mentioning Alpha Michael and Evelyn Moon was what disqualified us. It seemed as though she had recognised the names. It was possible that was why she wanted the first Event planner. So I had increased the dosage of her pills. It didn’t matter to me if she couldn’t remember beyond a day, I was not going to lose her.
“I have no idea, but it seems like a really big wedding. Remember we don't want to do something really loud. We both don’t have family members to join us. Just a few friends.”
I’d quickly made a couple of friends when we settled in. It was easy for me because I could speak Spanish. I was pretty sure Evelyn couldn’t understand a word of Spanish.
“Perhaps we should go out in the evening,” I said, watching her eat her breakfast. “There is a carnival in Ibiza. We can take the ferry. Or a flight.”
She nodded. “Yes. That'll be nice, Stefan. The nurse keeps saying I need to move about. A trip will be good.”
I smiled. “So, eat up fast so we can be on our way.”
We’d lodge in a guest house there, and then return to Barcelona the following day. I was convinced nothing could go wrong. No one knew us here. We’d just go out, have fun and return the following day.
Not until I saw her.
Rosaleen.
We had just arrived at the carnival and we were looking for a tattoo man to draw some tattoos on our faces. We were pushing through the crowd, looking around with Evelyn holding my hand firmly.
I’d just seen the tattoo man ahead when I also saw Rosaleen. At first I didn't recognise her. I wasn’t expecting her to be in Ibiza. I never told her where I was taking Evelyn to after we left the hotel. Then I saw she was looking at me too, and I looked again. She was with a group of friends and one of them was pointing at us.
Evelyn had noticed what was going on already.
“Who are those?” she asked.
Before i could say a word, one of the friends yelled, “Evelyn Moon, the greatest scammer of New York.”
Damn!
I pulled her away and pushed her into the crowd. She resisted, looking back at the women and fighting against me. “Who are those and what did they say?”
“Don’t bother about them,” I said. “They are drunk. It happens in carnivals like these.”
She planted her feet on the ground. “What is going on Stefan? Why do you keep pushing me and hiding me away from people? Did I do something awfully bad? Tell me the truth.”
I looked at her and all the lies I could think of vanished from my head. I couldn’t figure out any single lie that would not make her suspect me more.
“I’m just trying to protect you, Ev.. Stella,” I said. I bit my tongue. I was losing my shit.
“From what?” she asked.
“A lot of people are unhappy that we are together,” I said. “They think they deserve to be by my side instead of you. But I chose you, and I will continue to protect you.”
Her gaze softened. She had bought my lies. Perhaps I still had it in me.
“You don’t need to worry yourself,” she said. “I can handle it all.”
I hugged her. “Let’s not soil our experience. We are here to have fun.”
I couldn’t have fun. My eyes were in the crowd constantly. I felt like I recognized about five people. If I could find Rosaleen after traveling miles away from her, I knew others could still find us.
We lodged in one of the guesthouses for the night and afterwards I went out to look for Rosaleen. I had deleted her contact after we fled the hotel but I knew it was possible she was lodged nearby.
I started with the one we were lodged in.
The receptionist was impressed that a foreigner could be fluent in Spanish.
“I’m looking for a friend,” I said, after a bit of formalities. “I lost contact with her a while ago, but I saw her at the carnival a while ago. I don't know if it's possible for me to get her room number. I’ll really appreciate it.”
She smiled. “An ex girlfriend, huh?”
I smiled back.
“What’s her name?” she asked.
“Rosaleen. Blackwood.”
She tapped on a screen in front of her for a while and finally looked at me. “Yes, we have a Rosaleen Blackwood here.”
I sighed in relief. “Please, her phone number. Or her room number.”
She took a note and scribbled on it. “It’s against the rules,” she said. “Don’t mention my name if you get caught.”
She pushed the note towards me. “Goodluck, amigo.”
I really needed some goodluck. “Thanks.”
I found her room in a private reserved area. It was like a condo. I smiled. Rosaleen was never one who understood the word minimalist. The security stopped me at the entrance but I didn't need to introduce myself. I saw her coming towards me.
