Chapter 28 CHAPTER 28
Evelyn’s POV
I must have slept off a few minutes past eight, after the maid came to take me up to my room. It was 8:10pm when I glanced at the time.
“I’ll wait,” I said to her. “He said he'll be here soon.”
I woke up to the sound of the door ratting and watched as he stumbled in. A blanket was over me and I pushed it off as I sat up. I smiled before looking at the time. I was pretty happy to see he was back.
He stopped when he saw me. “You are still here?”
His words slurred. I noticed his loose tie then and the slight stain on his white shirt. He was drunk. He was having a good time while I waited there for him all day.
“Yes,” I grumbled. “I was waiting for you.”
I glanced at the time again. It was past midnight.
He sank on a couch and loosened his tie completely.
“You said you’d come back,” I found myself saying.
He sighed. “I’m sorry. Something came up.”
Yeah, right. He looked like he was having fun throughout the day and most likely with Rosaleen. Yet when he said those three words - I’m sorry - I felt myself loosening up.
“It’s alright. I know you are always busy. I could have easily gone there by myself.”
He groaned and undid his buttons, pulling his shirt apart. My eyes travelled to his bare chest and lingered. “It was just an X-ray,” I whispered.
He caught me staring and I looked away immediately. “We’ll get to the doctor tomorrow.”
“Today.”I laughed.
He didn’t get the joke. I pulled my legs up and hugged my ankles. “Did you read my proposal? I left it on your table after that morning.”
“Proposal,” he repeated. “You know the right channels, Evelyn.”
“Can’t I have this as a favor?” I pressed. “Alright. Take it as a payback for keeping me waiting.”
He stared at me, and even though I wasn't looking at him, I felt my ears burn. “You have five minutes.” He threw his head against the sofa.
“I want you to buy my company,” I began, a bit flustered as I didn't have all the details in my fingertips. “We can partner -”
He moved closer, cutting me short. “Go on,” he said, his eyes falling on my lips and staying there.
“Partner with the company,” I stuttered and tried to move away.
He moved closer still. My heart pounded in my chest and I felt a heat from within. “Michael.”
His hand wrapped my waist, his grip strong but gentle. I gasped gently as he pulled me closer to him. “Micheal, you are drunk,” I said, trying to push him off.
He leaned in and his lips brushed mine. It was soft, almost like a promise, and even more sensual than our last kiss. He groaned gently, tightening his grip around my waist and I felt myself giving in. I closed my eyes as his mouth took mine. It was a hungry kiss, demanding and consuming.
He pulled away and whispered my name again before he fell into a quick sleep. I stared at him as he snored gently. I was still feeling warm in my toes from the kiss. Why would he even kiss me when he was drunk after saying no touch?
I folded my blanket around me and headed for my room. A message came in from Xavier. I realized he had been calling me. Roman had called once too. I tapped on the message and read the details. I froze.
“No, no,” I muttered, swiping away the message app, with my fingers moving frantically over the phone for his number. The phone rang without him picking it up.
“Damn it,” I cursed.
Xavier had betrayed me and was selling off my shares.
—
I walked fast, pushing my shoes between the doors before they closed. I was very late to the office. After waiting at the agreed location for Xavier for more than two hours, I gave up and decided to show up at work. I needed to see Alpha micheal first, to convince him somehow to partner with a company that was getting pulled out of my grasp.
“He’s not in,” his secretary accosted me on my way in.
I glanced at my wristwatch. It was almost midday. “He hasn't been to work?”
“He is in a meeting,” she said, her hands gently ushering me away from the door.
Something clicked in my head. “With who?”
I knew his schedule was cleaned up for that morning to take me to the doctor. Why was he suddenly having a meeting?
“Something urgent. He’s meeting with new partners.”
I limped away slowly, the pain killer I had forced down my throat wearing down and the pain shooting through my ankle.
Rosaleen was also not in her office when I passed by. It seemed the meeting that was being held was quite important. I settled at my desk and brushed through the pile of work that had settled on it. Rosaleen was true to her words, she was keeping me busy. I pushed away the files and cleared the desk. I looked at my wall. The proposal I had pinned was not there. I had dropped it in the bin in frustration, and the bin had been emptied. I sighed. I needed to go over my proposal to prepare the speech I wanted to present to Alpha Michael.
I tried on the laptop but the screen remained blank. I tried again. After three attempts, I was panicking. The soft copy of my proposal was there and I had not saved it to the drive. I pushed my chair backwards and rushed out of the office. I needed to get the technical support to check on it and hopefully it was not anything serious.
I had just stepped into the elevator when someone rushed in too. It was Xavier. I parted my lips to speak but they felt dry and heavy. What was he doing here at Greywood industries all dressed up?
