Chapter 151 CHAPTER 151
Evelyn’s POV
“I was driving by, and before I knew it, I found myself here,” he said, a bit breathless as though he had hiked up the stairs instead of taking the lift.
That was his reply when I asked him what he was doing in my hospital room by 8 am.
I was packing the items I had left in the hospital room. Mum was clearing the accounts downstairs and so we were alone.
He stood awkwardly as I remained silent.
“You won’t say anything to me?” he asked.
I raised my head up slowly. “I don’t know what you want, Alpha Michael. You shouldn’t be here.” It hurt me even as I said it.
He stepped forward. “I know that. But when have we ever played according to the rules?”
His hand brushed my arm and I stepped back. “I have always played to the rules. It might not matter to people like you, though.”
He winced. “I deserve that.”
“You broke our contract by getting married to Rosaleen, Michael. There's nothing more between us.”
“Our son,” he said.
“I’ll be taking care of him from now on,” I said. Then I sighed. “You shouldn’t be here, Alpha Michael.”
He ran his fingers in his hair. “I don’t know why I'm here, Evelyn. This is all my fault. Even when you told me that we won’t work, I tried to convince you otherwise. I… I feel stupid. This is not who I am, Evelyn.”
I wanted to tell him that it was exactly how he was but I bit my lips. I was the stupid one who had thought he would choose me over his family. I wondered if I would have done the same thing. And for a while, I thought I probably had.
“Are you happy?” I asked.
“How could i possibly be happy, evelyn?” he asked.
“Good,” I said. “You’ve made a decision that has cost us both our happiness. I won’t listen to your promises, Michael. You are a good person, but you are just like everyone. You’d choose your family first. It’s time I started doing the same thing.”
He remained silent.
I smiled. “You have no fault in this, alpha Michael. It is I who forgot my place. You still owe me for the period I was your contract mate. I’ll be expecting it.”
I found mum downstairs. And suddenly I remembered the notes. I could have mentioned it to Alpha Michael that his father was sending anonymous notes and gifts to my mother. But since I'd forgotten about it, it was best I let it go.
I snaked my arm through hers and kissed her on her cheeks. “I’m so happy you’re here, mum.”
She raised a brow. “What has come over you?”
I laughed. “Can’t I tell you I love you anymore?”
She laughed gently. “I’m beginning to suspect you are the sender of those notes and gifts.”
I laughed. I wondered how she would feel if she found out they were from her arch enemy - alpha Raymond. I wondered what he meant by sending them.
We strolled out of the hospital and I took in the air without the smell of antiseptics and drugs. It was good to be free.
—
Shane filled me up with everything I needed to know. Greywoods industries had agreed to settle outside the court and my products were now mine.
“The settlement is a lot of money,” she said, beaming. “Enough to start afresh.”
She looked at me sadly. “I know it isn’t easy seeing everything that happened.”
Little Michael was sleeping in a cot in his grandmother’s room. Michael came every weekend to spend time with his son. I always made sure I was not in the house whenever he came. Not seeing him was the best way to forget about him. During the day, I buried myself in work and at night, I slept soundly. I was having dates that were uninteresting. Anything to keep myself busy.
“It’s not hard, Shane,” I said. “It was hard when I was trying to be what I wasn't.”
I let out a deep sigh.
She nodded slowly. “All the money offshore had been retrieved too. I guess my work here is done. I’ll miss working for you.”
I smiled and dropped a folder in front of her. “Come and work with me as our legal head.”
She laughed. “I’m making partner soon, evelyn.” she rose up. “Whenever you need any legal help, don’t hesitate to ring me.”
The case with the Greywood had earned her company so much as settlement and she had been promoted as a candidate for partnership.
“I will leave the slot open, Shane,” I replied.
She was a badass lawyer and I needed her on board.
“My rate will be higher from next time,” she said. “Say hello to aunt Anna and baby Michael.”
That evening, mum was away shopping. Michael was sleeping. I decided I wanted to have a drink. I turned off the light and put on the TV. I placed the drinks in front of me and I crossed my feet in front of the TV with the wine and a large box of pizza. My phone rang ceaselessly. It was one of my dates. I was going to tell him that I was not interested in a second date with him because he had spent the first date talking only about himself. But I was even too tired to tell him that. Perhaps, he would realise I was not interested and stop calling.
The doorbell rang. I wasn’t expecting anyone. Mum was not supposed to be back until about 8pm. I waited for it to ring the third time before I pulled myself to my feet. I dragged myself to the door, slightly drunk and turned the lock.
Alpha Michael stood in front of me with a bouquet of rose in his hand and a parcel in another. I looked at him.
“Happy birthday, Evelyn Moon.”
Tears stung my eyes. I looked at the flower and I knew that I was deceiving myself by thinking a box of pizza and a whole bottle of wine was enough to make my special day special.
