Chapter 15 CHAPTER 15
Evelyn’s POV
The wedding had been thankfully short. A private wedding consisting of just the two of us and our two lawyers. No guests or family members. It was difficult explaining that to Madeline but when she saw the first deposit in her account, she forgot the fiasco about not being invited to my wedding.
I looked at the floor to ceiling window in my room and a smile played on my lips. The buzzing of my phone caught my attention and I glanced at the screen. Anna. I picked it up.
“Gods, finally!" her voice was high pitched. “I’ve been trying to get you on chat all morning. I called twice too.”
I bit my lips. It was in Anna’s habit to not apologise for her offenses and speak to you like she was your best friend when she wanted to. “I’ve been busy,” I replied. “Moving in and settling in is quite overwhelming.”
There was a short pause, then her voice returned. “Well, I was thinking … Now that you are married to Alpha Michael, which is still quite unbelievable.. Can I come stay with you?”
I wasn’t even surprised by her request. “Why?”
“Oh come on,” she said. “I need to be in the right place so I can meet someone like Alpha Michael. I can’t meet anyone insanely rich if I'm living here.”
My stomach twisted. No one except Micheal and I knew about the one year contract. I couldn’t possibly bring Anna here. She would find out something was off before I blinked my eyes.
“Anna, I don't think you can live here,” I said. “We need our time together as much as we can get now, privately.”
She began to protest.
“I’ll call you if I change my mind.” With that, I ended the call and tossed the phone on the bed. I sighed. This wasn’t the time to deal with Anna’s selfishness, I had something more important to attend to. Beside the phone was a letter, a letter that reminded me that I had a lot to do within this one year period. My marriage to Alpha Michael had earned me a six month period to pay off my father’s debts. I picked up the letter, rolling it in my hands. I wouldn't sit still and watch that company get sold off to the highest bidder if I could still save it. I would fight for the only thing he had left behind for me.
I had a plan. Part of the contract I had signed with Alpha Michael allowed me to transfer my one year internship to his company. My plan was to introduce Moon’s enterprise to him and convince him to invest some money in it. I was also looking at some possible deals we could sign together.
I grabbed my laptop and slipped it into my bag. The email jasper had sent this morning said I should report to work at 11, and I would be working with the product management team. It was a good place to start because I had a lot of ideas I needed to develop.
A chauffeur drove me to the headquarters of the company which was just a short drive from the mansion. I smoothened my skirt as I stepped in. The building was alive with activities. I met Jasper at the reception. He wore a plastic smile.
“Mrs Greywood. Welcome to the madhouse,” he said, stretching out his hand for a handshake.
I took it and returned a plastic smile too. “Call me Evelyn please,.”
He nodded and led the way. “You’ll be working with a very competent team on the fourth floor for the next few weeks,” he said, walking briskly while I tried to keep up. “And can I brag to you that we just had the world’s record for the fastest sold product last week?”
I smiled. I had seen the news. The marketing strategy was genius, but I knew I could do even better. ”It was all over the business news,” I replied.
We arrived at a small cubicle that had my name plastered on the door: Evelyn Greywood. Intern.
“This would be your office for now,” he said, pushing the door open. “Is it to your taste?”
I stepped in. It was perfect. “Yes, Jasper. Thank you.”
My afternoon was dedicated to catching up. I had spreadsheets on upcoming launches, meetings and various crash courses. I scribbled all the important things in a note and pinned down any new ideas I had on a wall. Within a few hours, I could already identify areas where Greywood could explore, and others that would be perfect for Moon’s enterprises.
By 4pm, I stood up from the desk and stretched my legs. I had a proposal to present to Michael. Something that he would not be able to say no to. It would be a win-win for both companies. I watched the documents roll out of the printer and smiled happily. This was it.
His secretary was not on seat, so moved past her desk to his office. Just as I was about to knock on the door, I heard a woman’s voice, and then a giggle. “Oh, come on, Michael.”
I stopped. Was that the secretary? I felt the heat of anger rise to my throat. How dare he? Yet he could sit on his high horse and call me names? I pushed the door open without knocking and two pairs of startled eyes looked at me.
Michael scrambled away, but his partly unbuttoned shirt gave it all away. “You should knock before entering an office,” he snapped. “Did you learn nothing in the orientations today?”
I rolled my hand into a fist. The lady looked at me, no remorse in her face. I recognized her almost immediately. She was the company’s sweetheart. A name I had heard being sung from the reception to the floor where I worked. She was also the head of the product management team and I hated her on first contact. Rosaleen Blackwood.
