Chapter 149 CHAPTER 149
Evelyn's POV
I pulled away suddenly and slapped him across the face.
“You married her? Why?”
A faint and sad smile appeared on his face. “I deserved that.”
His hands were still wrapped around my waist.
“I'm sorry. I wanted to be here when you wake up.”
“But you weren't,” I snapped back. “I waited and waited. Until I heard the news. Why, Michael? What made you betray us in such a way?”
He moved away and he wiped the beads of sweat off his forehead. “Alot of things happened since that accident, Evelyn.”
He paused and looked at me as though that statement could explain it all.
“I can't tell you everything that happened,” he said finally.
“I deserve to know everything that happened,” I countered. “Where's my baby?”
He looked around the room. “Let's talk over dinner.”
I crossed my arms over my chest. “No. What are you not telling me?”
He sighed, ruffled his hair and turned around. I watched him. Was rosaleen pregnant for him? Was that even enough to abandon me? I just had our child.
“What is it?” i pressed.
“It's about my mum,” he said. He faced me. “I can't talk about it.”
I frowned. Maybe he had finally found out the truth that my mother was innocent. Why would he keep that truth away from me now?
“Tell me,” I said, moving closer.
He cupped my face in his hands when I got close. He drew his breath slowly. “I've fucking missed you. I've missed you everyday, Evelyn. Seeing you now makes it even harder.”
I was angry at the statement.
“I need to hear a very good reason, Alpha Michael,” I replied.
He moved away again and ruffled his hair. “My mother is alive,” he said, then went silent.
“What?”
“You can't tell anyone.”
“Why? My mother was labelled a murdered for years. Why?”
“It's complicated,” he said. “She'll be in danger if news gets out that she's alive.”
“Because she's like us?” I asked.
He shook his head.
“Then why?”
He moved closer again. “She's rogue,” he said, lowering his voice.
I blinked.
“Rosaleen was hurt. Terribly. She hurt her.”
“Michael…”
“I had to agree to her terms so she could keep quiet. It was fucking hard. I just thought, things would work out as the days went by. Perhaps she would be tired of me by the time you woke up.”
I shook my head and stepped back. “Gone rogue? You destroyed everything we had because you don't want the world to know your mother is alive but unwell?”
I knew he was hiding more. It wasn't possible. I hoped there was more.
He sighed. “Calderon is hunting after her,” he said. “His brother was killed. She killed him.”
“What? Why?” I asked. “I had no idea he had a brother. What happened?”
He held my hand. “Evelyn, I have to trust you with this. You can hate me for what I did but please, don't use this against me.”
I remained still.
“What is it?”
“They had an affair,” he said. “My mum and his brother.”
I didn't say the obvious. Perhaps Anna was not Alpha Raymond's.
“I'm sorry,” I said. “That must have been … hard to accept.”
He stepped closer. “I haven't given up on us, Evelyn. This is just temporary. Until we can figure and fix things.”
I squeezed my fingers to mask the hurt in my chest. “I won't wait forever, Michael,” I said, unprepared for how my voice would betray what I was trying to hide.
He lifted my chin. “I promise you.”
His eyes searched mine. I knew he found and saw my raw emotions in them. He'd probably see how shattered I was.
“I should take a nap,” I said even though a nap was absolutely not on my list.
His finger brushed over the ring he had placed on my finger. He leaned forward and kissed it, then kissed my forehead.
“I'm sorry for everything I've put you through, Evelyn.” He smiled sadly. “I mean you risked your life to save me. And you wake up to the news that I'm married to someone else.”
I winced at his statement.
“What became of Xavier?” I asked.
“He died in a prison fight.” He sighed.
I remained silent. I was thinking that perhaps it was not coincidental. Just like Marcus’ death.
“You can always come to Greywoods mansion to see the baby, and take him when you're ready.”
I nodded.
We said very little after that even though our minds were like storms. So he left and I returned to my bed. I slumped down on it, sighed and suddenly tears stung my eyes and rolled down.
I sniffed.
Rosaleen had won once more. It was irrelevant beating her. She always came back to take her place.
I wiped the tears and laughed hysterically. We were fooling ourselves. The truth was simple: his kind can never be with my kind.
“Even if his mother was one of us,” I stated loudly, looking out through the window.
___
When my mum returned, it was much later. As soon as she walked into the room, she could smell that Alpha Michael had been there. She frowned.
“He was here?” She asked.
I feigned ignorance. “Who?”
“Alpha Michael,” she said spitting out his name like it was a bad smell.
“He wanted to talk about the way forward,” I said.
“The way forward is to break ties with them,” she said inspecting a small package I had not noticed earlier.
“What's that for?” I asked.
She shrugged, tossing it in a basket that I had also not noticed. The basket was half filled with unopened parcels and written notes.
“Someone's been dropping them anonymously,” she said.
I stepped forward and inspected the pile closely. “You have a secret admirer,” I teased.
She scoffed and turned away.
I looked into the pile and found a handwritten note. I picked it up and looked at the words.
I recognised the handwriting suddenly. And I knew the sender.
