Chapter 128 CHAPTER 128
Evelyn’s POV
I realised I should have left with my family. They were right. Alpha Michael couldn’t bear the truth and he was gone. I sat alone in the kitchen, drumming my fingers absentmindedly on the table. I didn’t want to leave the city, but if things got heated up, I had to leave.
My phone beeped alerting me about a message from Shane. She always texted. That was how we spoke but I was feeling too lonely for a text. I called her.
“Which jail do I have to break you out from?” she asked, her tone serious.
I laughed. “Not yet. But I know you’ve got my back.”
“Always,” she replied. “I sent a copy of the contract to your mail. I drafted it as soon as I got your message.”
“Yeah. Thanks,” I replied. It was a little too late for that now. “I’ll check it up.”
I rose up and paced around. She seemed to sense my unease. “Do you… you can come sleep over at my place if you need to,” she said.
I stared outside through the window. It was dark. “I’m fine, Shane,” I lied. “This is not my first rodeo,” I said, forcing a laugh. “I’ll be fine.”
I placed my hand over my tummy and massaged it gently.
“I can sleep over if you want me to come,” she pressed.
“I could do with a sleepover,” I admitted. “But I couldn't ruin your night, Shane. We all know he’s proposing tonight.”
She laughed. “I didn’t mean to walk in on his surprise.”
I smiled sadly. I wished Alpha Micahel was with me. I needed him more than ever tonight. “Have fun, Shane. Let’s talk tomorrow.”
I heard some noise in front of the house and I walked to the door to make sure it was secured. I turned off the lights and returned to the table. The sound of the doorbell jolted me from my thoughts a few minutes later. It sounded again before I could recover from the initial shock.
I glanced at the time. It was almost 10pm. I wasn’t expecting anyone. Who could it be? Did Alpha Michael return?
I rose up and walked slowly to the door. The doorbell sounded again and I almost jumped back in fright. The door didn't have a peephole. So the only way I could find out who was at the door was to ask.
“Who’s there?” I asked.
“Evelyn?”
The sound of his voice brought immediate relief to me. It was him. I fiddled with the lock and unlocked the door. The cold air hit me as I opened the door and saw him standing there. I felt my heart leap in his presence. He didn’t smile. He just stepped forward and pulled me into his arms.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I’m so sorry.”
A tear slipped and soon another followed. I was sobbing. Seeing him and touching him, holding him was the best thing that could happen to that night.
“It’s okay,” he said, caressing my back. “I’m here, and I should never have left.”
He brought dinner and laid it on the table. In all the chaos of the day, I had forgotten to eat lunch and dinner.
“I’m such a fool,” he said. “And I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but I need you to forgive me, Evelyn.”
I chewed slowly. “What do you mean?”
He stretched his hand across the table and took mine in his. He squeezed it and held my gaze. “They didn’t do it.”
I knew that, and hearing it from him was a relief. And I was scared to think that he wouldn’t have returned if she didn’t find out the truth.
“How did you find out?” I asked, my hands still enveloped by his.
He rubbed my knuckles and let my hand go. “I asked Alpha Raymond. He told me the truth.”
I felt knots in my stomach and I swallowed the food in my mouth. “He told you my mother and aunt had nothing to do with it?”
He nodded.
“So he knew the truth all these years and he let two innocent women suffer?” I stopped. “Did you ask him about the baby?”
He frowned. “What baby? The baby died.”
I shook my head. “When your mother was bleeding, my aunt helped her rescue the baby. The baby was alive. I don't know if she is still alive.”
“She?”
“It was a girl. My aunt delivered her.”
He leaned against the back rest of his chair. “Alpha Raymond never mentioned a child. He said the child was killed.”
“No,” I said. “The baby was born. Madeline was there when it happened. We can ask her what happened to the child. My mum said they left after she saw them.”
“Madeline?” he asked. “Your step mother?”
“Yes.”
“What a coincidence,” he said.
When we slept that night, I let him wrap his arms around me. I told myself that it was time to stop running away from my fate. My contract mate was my fated mate, and running away was not going to change things.
“I won’t try to run away,” I said, my voice heavy with sleep.
He leaned forward and kissed my forehead. “This world is too small for you to run away from me, Evelyn. We'll always find our way back.”
I nodded.
“I have something important to tell you,” he said, stroking my hair.
“Huh?” I asked.
“It’s about my mother,” he continued. “She was exactly like you. I found out today.”
I blinked. “What do you mean?”
“She was a nine tailed fox,” he said. “I was brought up to hate the very thing my mother was.”
I leaned up. “Are you kidding?”
He shook his head. I was no longer sleepy. “Did Alpha Raymomd tell you that?”
“He did.”
I felt a mix of emotions. I was grateful that he felt safe enough with me to tell me something so delicate. I was relieved that he was partly like me. And I was nursing the idea that perhaps this was what we had to offer to Viktor Calderon if things went awry.
