Chapter 122: The Battle

Chapter 122: The Battle

Dawn broke grey and cold, the sun hidden behind clouds that promised rain. I stood on the rise overlooking the valley, a small guard of warriors around me, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. Below, the army of united packs waited. Three hundred wolves, their eyes fixed on the tree line where Damian's forces would appear.

Xavier was among them. I couldn't see him from here, but I felt him through the bond. His focus was absolute, a blade honed to lethal sharpness. Beneath it, love burned like a steady flame. Love for me. Love for the pack. Love for every wolf who stood beside him.

‘Be safe,’ I sent down the bond. ‘Come back to me.’

‘Always.’

The first wave hit like a storm.

Rogues exploded from the tree line, hundreds of them, their howls splitting the air. They were wild, desperate, their eyes burning with a hunger that spoke of years on the run, years of hatred, years of waiting for this moment. They crashed into our lines with the force of a tidal wave.

The battle began.

I watched from the rise, my hands clenched at my sides, my breath coming in short gasps. The guard around me shifted restlessly, their instincts screaming to join the fight, their duty keeping them in place. I understood. Every part of me wanted to run down there, to be with Xavier, to fight beside him. But I knew my place. I knew my role. I watched. I waited. I prayed.

Through the bond, I felt Xavier. His fury was a bonfire, hot and consuming, but beneath it, cold, lethal control. He wasn't the monster of his past, lost to bloodlust. He was the Alpha, defending his own. Every move calculated. Every strike precise.

Damian was strong.

I saw him through the chaos, a massive wolf with scars crossing his muzzle and eyes that held no mercy. He moved through our lines like death incarnate, leaving bodies in his wake. Warriors who had fought beside us, who had come from distant packs to answer our call, fell before him.

The rumors were true. He had dabbled in dark magic. I felt it through the bond, a sickening energy that clung to him like a shroud. The same power Viktor had used. The same corruption.

But he hadn't counted on this.

He hadn't counted on wolves who had once been enemies fighting side by side. He hadn't counted on the unity we had built, the bridges Xavier had crossed. Stone Crest warriors fought beside Silver Creek wolves. Meadow Run wolves covered the flanks of their former rivals. The army moved as one, a single organism driven by a single purpose.

Survival.

The battle raged for hours. The sun crawled across the sky, hidden behind clouds that never released their rain. Bodies piled on both sides. The ground turned red. And through it all, I felt Xavier. Fighting. Leading. Protecting.

I saw the moment he and Damian met.

The chaos seemed to part around them, as if the battle itself recognized that this was the moment everything would be decided. Two Alphas, circling each other in a storm of fang and fury. Damian was larger, his body twisted by dark magic into something almost monstrous. But Xavier was faster. Smarter. Driven by something Damian would never understand.

Love.

I watched through the bond as much as through my eyes. Felt every strike, every dodge, every desperate lunge. Damian's power was immense, his dark magic giving him strength beyond natural limits. But Xavier had something stronger. He had us. He had the pack. He had me.

When Damian lunged, aiming for Xavier's throat, Xavier spun, his claws raking across the rogue Alpha's side. Damian roared, the sound扭曲 by pain and rage. He struck back, his claws finding purchase, drawing blood. I felt the sting through the bond, gasped as Xavier stumbled.

But he didn't fall.

He couldn't fall.

He had too much to live for.

The final exchange happened so fast I almost missed it. Damian lunged again, his jaws aiming for Xavier's neck. Xavier dropped, rolled, came up beneath him. His claws found Damian's throat. His jaws closed around it.

One brutal twist.

Damian's body went limp. His dark magic dissipated, a foul wind that vanished as quickly as it had come. The rogue Alpha fell, his blood soaking into the ground that had become a graveyard.

For a moment, everything was still.

Then Xavier threw back his head and howled.

It was a sound of victory, of grief, of triumph. The wolves of the united packs took it up, their voices rising to the grey sky, a song that echoed across the valley and beyond. The remaining rogues, seeing their leader dead, scattered into the forest. The battle was over.

I didn't wait for permission. I ran.

Down the rise, through the carnage, past the wounded and the grieving. My feet carried me faster than I thought possible, the bond pulling me forward, a lifeline in the chaos. I found him at the center of it all, still in his wolf form, his fur matted with blood and dirt.

He shifted as I approached, human and exhausted and beautiful. His arms opened, and I crashed into them, holding him so tight I was afraid I might break him. He held me just as tightly, his body shaking with the aftermath of battle, with relief, with love.

"I'm here," he whispered into my hair. "I'm here."

I pulled back just enough to look at him. His face was streaked with blood, some his, most not. His eyes were bright with unshed tears. He was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

"Don't you ever do that again," I said, my voice breaking.

He laughed, a broken, beautiful sound. "I'll try."

I kissed him then, in the middle of the battlefield, surrounded by the dead and the wounded and the victorious. I kissed him with everything I had, pouring my love, my fear, my relief into that single point of contact. He kissed me back just as fiercely, his hands fisting in my hair, pulling me closer.

When we finally broke apart, both breathless, he rested his forehead against mine.

"We won," he whispered.

"We won." I smiled through my tears.

Around us, the army began the slow work of recovery. The wounded were tended. The dead were mourned. The living held each other and remembered why they had fought.

And in the center of it all, Xavier and I stood together, the bond humming between us, stronger than ever. We had faced the darkness and survived. We had proven that love was stronger than hate, that unity was stronger than division, that hope was stronger than despair.

The battle was over. The future was ours.
