Chapter 27 The Name that was Used
"Someone is using my name like a weapon" Rafael said. He did not look up from the communications board. His fingers moved across the interface with precision.
I walked closer to Rafael calmly. The war room was almost empty now. The strategists were weak, going their faces showing they were very tired. They were not surprised by news anymore. They just kept track of it.
"Which name" I asked Rafael, my voice almost a whisper.
He looked up at me with a smile on his lips. " Both of them" he said.
Vince was standing at the end of the table. His hands were flat on the surface. His eyes were moving across the map slowly. He did not react to what Rafael said. That meant he already knew. The conversation I was now part of had been delayed on purpose.
I felt something in my chest. It was like I had swallowed something
"How long" I asked Vince.
Vince stood up straight. His jaw moved before he answered. Enough to confirm the pattern he said.
"That is not an answer" I said.
It is the one I have that does not require me to guess Vince said.
Rafael pulled up a screen. He turned it so I could see the lines of coded transmissions. My name was in them. My given name. They were using my name in challenge documents. In alliance proposals and in the declaration that were made by the boarder.
Alot of tension rose through my chest and it almost looked like the world would end in that very moment.
I stared at the scrolling text. Most of it I could not understand.. The structure was familiar. Challenge documents have a shape. A particular weight. I could feel the shape of it through the encryption.
"They are making it sound like I sanctioned their movements and we both know that I never did anything." I said.
Worse Rafael said. They are making it sound like I am directing them.
The map on the table changed. Three territory lines pulsed briefly. The color deepened at the edges. Pressure had been building since the harbor.
Vince looked at me. There was something in his expression. He was working to keep it flat. Not anger. Something careful than anger.
If the packs believe I am already directing movements without Vinces authorization he said, the binding structure we stabilized at the harbor becomes a claim.
Contested by who I asked.
By every Alpha who wants to argue that I am already aligned with a faction Rafael said. My name appearing in those documents without my knowledge is not an accident. Someone drafted those transmissions knowing what it would imply.
I felt pressure behind my eyes. It was building slowly.
Marco I said.
Neither of them spoke immediately. That silence was its confirmation.
He is dead I said. Though the word tasted uncertain. I had believed that before. Been wrong.
Marcos name appears nowhere in those transmissions Rafael said carefully. His methodology does.
Vince moved around the edge of the table. He stopped near me. I could read the steadiness he was forcing into his posture. The deliberate stillness of a man who understands that his own certainty is a resource.
What I need to know Vince said, is whether I have any sense of where those transmissionsre originating. Through the system. Through the connection I anchored at the harbor.
I closed my eyes for a moment. I let the awareness that had settled into my blood since the harbor extend outward. The system responded.
The channels I had opened were still active. The balance I had anchored was holding.. It was holding the way a bridge holds when the load it was designed for has been exceeded.
Somewhere along one of those channels something was moving that did not carry the texture of any pack I had touched before. Precise. Deliberate. Shaped to look like mine.
I opened my eyes.
It is inside the network I said. Whoever is doing this understands the system enough to mimic the signature of a registrar command without triggering the systems own correction response.
Rafaels hand stilled on the interface.
That narrows the field considerably he said quietly.
"To who" I asked.
He exchanged a look with Vince. The kind of look that carries a conversation that has already happened somewhere I was not present for.
My voice came out harder than I intended. Stop doing that I said.
Deciding what I am ready to hear before I ask for it I said. I rewrote the rules of this system at a dock while bullets were still in the water. You can tell me the truth.
The room held its breath for a moment.
Then Rafael said, There are three individuals who understand the registrar architecture well enough to do what we are seeing in those transmissions. One of them is me. One of them was my father.
The air shifted in the room and slowly tension begins to rise.
"And the third" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
Rafael set down the device in his hand with care, avoiding the need to tamper with anything that could cause a problem.
The third he said, formally died in a fire in a mountain stronghold four weeks ago.
The map on the table pulsed once. The channels in the system flared briefly.
My voice came out steady. He is using my name to move packs into position I said. Which means he does not need me alive to unlock the compacts.
Vinces eyes found mine, they were searching for answers hidden in my heart. For the time since I had known him what lived behind them was not calculation or command or certainty.
It was the specific contained dread of someone who has just realized that the thing he spent months protecting was never what was actually, at risk.
He already has what he needs Vince said.
The map shifted again. This time the lines did not slow down.
