Faith Being Questioned
The Seer looked displeased with my words then he crossed his arms. There was a long tense atmosphere in the once comfortable dining room and I knew the inevitable for bringing Hati to the only wolf who could hear the Moon Goddess's voice.
"It seems that your church brainwashed you to believe such claims."
"No, if you feel his words, his presence and the scriptures that were passed through generations, Hati wouldn't wish for the wolves to die for his sake."
Based on the seriousness of the situation, the Seer could potentially report this to Varick but then again, I have the baby in me. He wouldn't take action against me while I could potentially carry the reincarnation of Skoll.
I knew it sounded like I held my own child as hostage but if it meant for me to give me more freedom of expressing my thoughts, then I shall continue taking advantage of this.
I was ready for any reprimands from the Seer and brace myself—
"Pfft!"
—Only to get myself caught off-guard.
"This is why I found the situation laughable that you and the current Alpha were like Ying and Yang." He hid his suppressed laughter behind his long sleeve.
"We w-were—what?" I asked in confusion.
"Never mind," he said with a grin. And oddly enough, despite his feminine features, he had a mischievous smile. “Didn’t the High Mage nor the Alpha mention anything about me before reaching here?”
I couldn’t answer and seeing the glint of his eyes, his welcoming presence had long gone and was replaced with something else.
“They didn’t warn me about anything that could offend you…sir.”
“I would have figured the High Mage had something to do with this,” he said with a chuckle. He leaned against the table as he said.
“I despised the Hatiist Church. I believe it wasn’t the first time you’ve heard of this, hmm?”
Frowning, I could only nod. Of course the Seer would despise Hati especially when he was the direct connection to the Moon Goddess.
Yet, since I was used to it, it didn’t falter my resolve. “I apologize if my—as you named it, preaching has offended you. But I believe I still have the right to say this if it means to find ways to avoid such fate.”
“I see…you have grown attached to your mate, huh?”
This time it caught me off-guard. “Sir?”
"Is there anything else you wanted to ask?" He immediately changed the subject as he continued observing me.
And it felt like mockery with the way he said it in that tone.
"Well, about Lenalee…" I decided to go along with him as I needed to obtain more information while we were alone.
"I would like to know why you recommended her as my aid."
"Ah…" He thought for a while. "It was the Moon Goddess who recommended her, I was only relaying her message."
What?!
"The fact that the young beta wasn't a Skollist surprised me. Perhaps, the moon goddess found your compatibility as friends."
Oh no… this wouldn't end well. A sweat dropped from my chin as I felt my voice dry.
"D-did…" I gulped and I felt my hand tremble. "Did Varick, my husband, know about this?"
"Fortunately, we were interrupted during our brief conversation," he replied. And I sighed in relief.
"Good for you, Luna." He smiled and each time he did, I felt he was toying with me.
'He was acting like a caring wolf before I slipped out Hati's name.
Now, I don't understand what he is thinking.'
"Then I wonder, Seer. Why brought Lenalee for me at the expense of the lives of the pack?"
"That is…something I am unaware of." He twirled the spoon of his porridge as he took a bite.
"You must have known the fact that Seers only hear what the Moon Goddess wants us to hear and nothing else."
"Even the fact that you are the fated mate and the mother of the reincarnation of Skoll was a wonderful surprise," he said and I glanced to see his fingers clenched and unclenched while he sipped his tea.
"But the prophecy you speak of brings more violence," I said as I shook my head. "The war…the revenge of numerous deaths won't ever end."
"What if Hati's promise would help avoid such a terrible fate! If w-we focus on Hati, find more about his whereabouts outside the pack, we could end this war with no sacrifices!"
"And you think we could easily roam around the outside world without getting killed?"
"Well," I pondered for a while. "There would be some packs with whom we could form an alliance so we could speak to the rest of the packs."
"And will there be any rational wolf pack that could form an alliance with us?" He asked as he poured tea into his empty cup.
"Well, there is the—" I was about to speak about the Hatiist groups Kozart mentioned but oddly enough, my gut feeling was telling me not to say anything about them.
Even Varick or Phineas weren't informed.
I bit my lower lip and I averted my eyes while the Seer sipped his tea.
"Tell me, Luna." He placed his tea cup back to the saucer as he leaned closer. Once I stared at him, I noticed his eyes were brighter blue than I thought.
"When exactly is the Sun God, Hati, going to save us all according to your scriptures?"
"I…." I don't know.
"Or the fact that it has been two hundred years since this war ever started and there wasn't a single sign of his return."
"H-He w-will!"
"Are you saying that to convince me or to convince yourself?" He probed.
"No! I believe in Hati!"
"Really?" It sounded condescending. He stood up right after as he walked in slow playful steps towards me. "Seems to me that you have the look of doubt. And you wouldn't lie to yourself because after all…" He held my cheek as he gave an angelic smile. A smile far from being an angel.
"...That is a sin for a nun-to-be: to lie and deceive…"
I flinched from his touch and I pushed his hand away. "N-No…"
My whole body trembled as I shook my head in denial. "I m-may not be a nun anymore but I still have fate in the Sun God!" I glared at him. "Just you watch!" I stood up, carrying my dress as I turned my heel. "Excuse me and thank you for the meal." It was a sardonic tone meant to get my point across. I should be used to such derogatory remarks against Hati but it was the first time someone questioned my faith!
"Oh, if you're leaving, make sure to wake up the High Mage—"
"He needed sleep. I can escort myself out, thank you very much. Now if you excuse me."
He only chuckled and it only infuriated me. "Oh before you leave, the drink I gave you had some side effects." His grin grew wider.
"Oh well, you will find out later in the evening."
And I closed the door behind as I left the cottage.
How dare he?! Questioning my fate like that!
I stormed out and tears fell from my eyes. I rubbed my eyes and as I continued walking in the beautiful meadow of flowers. Now, the sight irritated me just by the thought of that Seer. As I wiped my tear-stained eyes, the Seer's words repeated in my mind. And a thought came to my mind.
"W…what if…he was right…?"
